I mean no disrespect but i have to say India..studied there for 3 years (2007–2009) the people are very friendly as long as u exclude those that try to rip u off every single time… where do i begin?.. i studied in a small university town in the state of Karnataka so my view is based on what i saw during those years at the area…public urination at the sidewalk, public defecation near some bushes, cow dung on the streets, sidewalks, everywhere as they allow cows to roam freely… if u go to the slums the situation gets worse, the stench is just unbearable… i got food poisoning in the 1st month i arrived and that was despite eating at what appeared to be well sanitized restaurants… i dont know why everywhere i go in india bangalore, delhi, chennai, jaipur all seemed to be so dusty and the air is so~ polluted… the few places i felt comfortable enough to actually breathe were shimla and manali… despite all that i did enjoy my time in india, the food was great just maybe the government needs to do more with regards to sanitation and infrastrcuture and probably public education on hygiene..

I've traveled to over 40 countries in the past 8 years. The dirtiest country I've traveled to is India. I've traveled to India about 12 times in my life and every time I arrive it is dirtier than the time before. Pollution, smog, open feces from human and animal, vermin, and lots of dust and dirt. Even a relatively clean city like Jaipur has enormous amounts of pigeon defecation.

I've been to Nepal, Egypt, Uganda and Vietnam that have some of these problems but none of these countries can compare to India with respect to the amounts of filth.
My advice if you want to travel to India: travel to the smaller cities that tend to have less of these issues. Jaipur is nice, so is Agra. A city like Hyderabad perhaps lies on the dividing line.

The country with the 5th largest economy in the world, with more billionaires per square mile than any other country, with the highest illiteracy, and with the highest infant mortality of all 208 (?) countries on the planet - is also by far the dirtiest.
INDIA.
None of the above details are coincidental or unconnected. India is a country of extremes - extreme poverty and deprivation - and extreme wealth concetrated in the hands of the callous few. The priorities of the ruling elite do not extend to improving the environment and the provision of services for the average citizen - let alone for the desperately poor. As a result, 9 of the 10 most polluted cities on the planet are in India (also 15 of the worst 20).

Also, India’s Tax system is less redistributive than almost any third world country - let alone any rich western one - despite the huge recent growth in national wealth. In the period when China has pulled 350 million out of poverty, “democratic” India has achieved very little permanent progress whatsoever.
So where does all the money go? …… to the corrupt politicians and callous decadent businessmen, making millions from exploitation of their own poor, while living playboy lifestyles in the US, UK, and Europe ….. and largely - and VISIBLY - voting Left, as a signal of their “virtuous caring”. Don’t believe one word of it !!

I was quite shocked at first at the rubbish in Thailand. But that was my first time out of Australia.

I should add that when I was really young, in Australia we littered more, and it was probably pretty grotty in most cities and towns. However, when I was about 4 or 5, (1980s) the Keep Australia Beautiful and “Do the right thing put it in the bin” littering campaign came in, along with national “Clean Up Australia Day” once a year, and tidy town awards in most states. Through a process of constant government advertising reprimanding litter bugs, hectoring Australians not to litter and a greater appreciation for our beautiful fragile country and what littering does, and provision of good public bins has meant Australia is far cleaner now than 40 years ago. Public littering is really frowned upon. People still litter, but not nearly as much. One can swim now in any of Melbourne's inner city beaches. Back then it was a bit more dodgy to swim at St Kilda or Port Melbourne. On the outter Peninsula beaches the water is pristine. Same in Sydney. Back in the early 1980s both Bondi and Manly beaches - Sydney's iconic beaches were open sewers after a bad storm - surf ♂️ with a turd . Not now. Both are amazing now, but it took a while…

I live in London. It's pretty filthy at times - I've gotten used to seeing bags and bags of rubbish beside public bins, and public bins overflowing. Other parts of the UK are cleaner and nicer.
I used to live in Kyiv, Ukraine. There would be bags and bags of rubbish dumped in the beautiful parks that ring the city. It was pretty grotty in parts - once the Soviet unx collapsed it seems they struggled to provide basic city hygiene like this.

I was struck by how clean neighbouring Poland was!
I was quite shocked by Naples and the rubbish every where, and Rome wasn't much better.
Seoul, South Korea - spotless.

Netherlands - very clean. Neighbouring Belgium a bit grottier. I was just in Luxembourg city - spotless. Germany the cities I've been to are quite clean, as is neighbouring Austria, a country I know well.
I was impressed with Kuala Lumpur and Penang with how clean they both were.
All of Northern Europe I've seen - Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were all quite clean and litter free mostly.

Earlier this year I was in South Africa and I noticed Cape Town looked a bit grubbier, dirtier and run-down compared to 10 years ago on my last visit.
Canada - clean and efficient like Australia.
The USA - San Francisco was a tad grotty in parts, Phoenix Arizona was clean.

I was in Paris of recent and despite all the protests and civil unrest, it seemed quite clean compared to dirty London.
I do remember going to a Med beach near Bandol in Southern France and being shocked at how dirty the beach was. Similarly in Mallorca I remember seeing litter in the sea water. Likewise Malta itself was fairly clean but I noticed the sea water wasn't.

I was just in Greece, and noticed a bit of rubbish around, especially on the island. Also just in Morocco and not enough bins and too much single use plastic.

India, by far, but the river in Bangkok, Thailand had the worse stench and massive garbage clogs floating on the water near the city.
In India the rivers near cities where thick with mostly human waste, and dozens of men at a time urinated against walls on busy streets. Children took over sections of city sidewalks and turned them into toilets and flies were everywhere.
In Mexico a few years ago, there masses of white plastic bags that had been dumped filled with trash and winds had blown there plastic bags over desert areas and the caught of plants — really awful looking. I’d never seen that in Mexico before on previous trips. Pasadena to see.

The Middle East and sub-Continent. The culture there places a low premium on public spaces. People’s homes will be spotless, but the public areas are a rubbish dump. Israel is proof that it is a cultural thing. Arab cities, towns and villages are like that. Jewish cities and towns where most of the residents are second and third generation of Mizrahi (Middle Eastern background - Parents/grandparents came from Morocco, Egypt, Iraq, Yemen etc.) will have less well kept public areas than cities and towns with a predominantly Ashkenazi (people who either they or their parents/grandparents/great grandparents immigrated from Russia or other European countries, or the anglophonic (US, Commonwealth) world.

Even among immigrants from the FSU, those from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine etc treat public areas very differently from those who immigrated from Bukhara and other Muslim areas. As for India, it’s in a class of its own. BTW, despite that, we love it, and will continue to go there until we’ve explored evey part of that amazing wonderfull chaotic unkempt and yes unfortunately dirty and unhygienic country, that is an amazing concert and cacophony thrown into one of noise and color. You other love it or hate it, we love it.

China was also traditionally a country nor known for its cleanliness. Singapore, a culturally Chinese country implemented draconian legislation and enforcement to get people to change their attitudes, and it worked. China today is less slovenly when it ocmes to public areas than it used to be, as the regime has invested a lot of sticks anbd carrots in chnaging attitudes and behaviour. However it’s no Japan, which is renowned for a culture that places a premium on cleanliness, including the public domain.

The dirtiest country I ever visited was India.
The streets were filled with garbage and the air was thick with smog.
Everywhere you looked there were piles of trash, and it seemed like no one cared about keeping their environment clean.
Even in some of the more touristy areas, there was a noticeable lack of sanitation standards that made me feel uncomfortable at times.
It's a shame because India is such an amazing place full of culture and history, but its environmental issues are hard to ignore when you're visiting.

Most of the dirtiest countries are mostly those countries which are densely populated and poor.
Asia - India, Philippines, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kathmandu and few parts of southern region of Nepal and Pakistan.
Africa - Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Mali, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Malawi, Uganda, Chad, Central African Republic and others.
South America - Peru, Venezuela and Bolivia.
North America - Honduras, Belize and El Salvador.
But mostly in comparison, Asian countries are dirtier in the world. Especially, slum areas of any countries are more populated and dirtiest.

Picture taken from Google, one example of dirty city.
Conclusion - Countries which are highly populated, war ravaged, mostly corrupted, poor literacy, lack of awareness are dirtier than other countries. Thank you for reading.

And the oscar goes to …. India.
You have seen the pictures, so I won't be uploading any.
Apart from the few reason mentioned by others, here is my take.
There are many reason but for me the primary reason:- More than a billion people living in denial of the fact that India is dirty, if it wasn't, why come up with campaign like swach bharat?. To find a cure you need to first accept that you are sick.

It’s not a country, but I still want to mention it. In April, I visited Sicily ( Italy ), and I was so shocked. My first stop was Palermo, and I’ve never seen the dirtiest city. The city center is okay, pretty beautiful, but only a few meters from central streets, you can see lots of garbage. It’s everywhere: some papers, food leftovers, other nasty things.
I was very surprised because I wasn’t expecting something like this. And the smell is also not the best. It’s a pretty poor Italian part, but still, people seem not to even care about it, and for them, it is easier to throw litter in random places and not into garbage bins.

Turkey. The Syrians may have contributed to its filth, but the Turks are filthy in dealing with foreigners and tourists who pay thousands of dollars for a holiday in their country. Going there is a waste of money, nothing special there. You can find many wonderful things there but all of them you can find in other countries. I would prefer to go, perhaps, to Egypt and Spain. The people there are nice and welcoming, and you cannot find any bad dealings with tourists. The beaches are wonderful, and the history in Egypt you cannot find anywhere else in the world.
