The dirtiest country I ever visited was India.
The streets were filled with garbage, the air was thick with smog and pollution, and there seemed to be a never-ending stream of honking cars.
Everywhere you looked there were people living in poverty, struggling to make ends meet.
It was an eye-opening experience that made me appreciate my own life back home even more than before.
On the other hand though, it also showed me how resilient people can be when faced with difficult circumstances - something that will stay with me forever!

I’d have to say Thailand. But when I say this, i’m talking in particular about Bangkok. Although Thailand is a beautiful country and I had a great time in Bangkok, there is some extreme poverty, the city is choking under its own weight. The city itself is a little smaller than London but with double the population. Smog is is not uncommon there. In some ares, litter ravaged the streets, a stench of cigarettes in the air and some of the biggest rats I have ever seen.
Up North in Chiang Mai, The hostel I stayed in although it had great food, the showers and toilets looked like that scene in Trainspotting and I ended up not having a shower and using a toilet in a much cleaner cafe.
Now I don’t wanna put anyone off visiting because its a great place to visit with some amazing culture and people, its also very cheap to visit but it’s not the cleanest place on earth.

New Delhi India.
To be fair, I didn’t travel extensively through India so I may have found places that were worse.
It’s not that Indians are dirty people. Quite the opposite. I am of Indian descent. I traveled with my family. The places I visited simply had an overwhelming number of people, and people create some of their own “dirt” and pollution.
Frankly the city smelled bad. The air pollution is extreme there and the wastewater system is dysfunctional at best and completely inadequate to handle the population.
I’d like to see the city and the country improve.

Bangladesh is the dirtiest place I have been too and one of the few countries that I have zero interest in visiting a second time. It seemed to have the worst of British bureaucracy overlaid with Islamic religion and culture. I worked for almost a month in Dhaka and Chittagong with the World Bank and subsequently was asked to apply for a two year Diplomatic Posting (this would have followed a two year Posting to Indonesia which was dirty but I go still there there) and was very glad when I missed out. I have seen the dirt of India and Nepal and have been to Nepal on three occasions and India once - I would go back to these countries.

For me, the dirtiest country of the 13 countries I have visited or lived in would be Indonesia. The photo someone else said was the Philippines, could be illustrated as Jakarta and the river outside the office building I worked from., and others I filmed. There were other slums in Jakarta and cities throughout Indonesia that appalled me.
I have seen slums in Bangkok that were bad, but nowhere as bad as in Jakarta. Even the worst places I saw in Pakistan were far better.

I'm going to nominate Indonesia, because of the horrible juxtapostion of where the waste is dumped.
Indonesia has stunningly beautiful rainforest, pristine and ancient with amazing wildlife. But as you are driving along staring in awe, you will find an illegal dump where someone has thrown several lorry loads of rubbish off the side of road.
Indonesia has the most amazing diving with stunning reefs, huge turtles and colourful fish. But lodged amoungst them will be domestic waste dumped into the sea by islanders.
Surrounded by such beauty, the dumps are even uglier than normal.

If you have studied in advance the place of residence and are ready to see besides palm trees and snow-white sand rats at the dumpster, it will not be a surprise to you. If you are soft and clean, Asia, South America, Africa is better not to explore. We've seen the dirt of India, and the stench of Vietnam, and the destruction and construction waste of Cambodia, but in all these countries we found a lot of real cultural and historical treasures, which were overshadowed by all the negativity. So it's important to separate the concepts - are you going to learn the country or on vacation?)

Answering your question, probably the dirtiest for us was the city of Sihanoukville, Cambodia, as we got to a period of its global development. The sidewalks were completely ripped up, the asphalt was removed throughout the city, the Chinese were building the city simultaneously with several thousand obxts - hotels, skyscrapers, business centers (if I remember correctly in 2020 there were about 5000 construction projects in this small resort town). And because they were building fast, construction debris was mixed in with organic debris. Now the construction is in its final stages, the roads have already been repaired, the sidewalks have been restored. But we were at the very peak of this chaos. It embarrassed us little, we were looking for sparsely populated beaches, exploring temples, parks and neighborhoods of the city on a moped and in 10 days of stay we saw a lot.

The influential magazine “The Economist” recently carried a story about India’s environment “ “Why is India one of the most polluted countries on Earth” The “Economic Times” followed this with a story headlined “India alarmingly filthy even by standards of poor countries”. Nobody living here can deny it. Most of our lakes and rivers are severely poisoned with urban and chemical effluents. The air in most of the cities, particularly in North India is polluted well beyond the severe level prescribed. Even without reading these it is now quite apparent that six years after the Prime Minister announced the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan with much fanfare, it is apparent that we cannot clean up the rotting trash that has become so common on our streets all over the country?

Men can be seen all over the country peeing on walls or into the air. It is almost impossible to find any pavements in our towns and cities, and when there are some, they are strewn with trash and wet with urine. Simple logic tells us we need a lot more trash bins and public toilets. But that is the easier part.

Keeping them clean and usable is the more difficult part. Clearly we are failing. We have a system of high cost government with low returns. We need a newer and better way of managing ourselves. Visiting the Banaras Hindu University on February 4, 1916, Mahatma Gandhi in his address said: “I visited the Vishvanath temple last evening. If a stranger dropped from above on to this great temple, would he not be justified in condemning us? Is it right that the lanes of our sacred temples should be as dirty as they are? If even our temples are not models of cleanliness, what can our self- government be? We do not know elementary laws of cleanliness. We spit everywhere. The result is indescribable filth.” In the 104 years since then things have only worsened. We not only spit everywhere, we piss everywhere, we shit wherever and dump our garbage anywhere. India is easily the most dirty, unhygienic and filthy country in the world. Picking up from here, our Prime Minister had rightly launched the Swachh Bharat campaign to clean up India. He has announced an ambitious campaign to build home toilets for 12 million urban households, 25 million public toilets, and 30 million community toilets.

In all over 300 million will be helped with “solid waste management practices” and this is to be achieved by 2019 and will cost the nation Rs.62009 crores. This is not a sum that we cannot afford. Will India become a cleaner, healthier and more hygienic nation, less offensive to sight and smell? I didn’t think so then and now it is apparent that the Swachh Bharat campaign has so far been more of a failure than a success.

Nevertheless the Prime Minister must be lauded for flagging this as a priority. But intentions are not everything. He did not think of ways to implement his plans. His ambitions were huge. He also promised to build one hundred smart cities with 24X7 drinking water, zero garbage disposal and total solid waste management with full-scale drainage and sewerage systems. A look at East Delhi today will tell you that not little, but nothing has happened in this BJP controlled municipality. It’s the same all over the country. The BJP’s manifesto did rightly promise a hundred new cities because new cities are imperative, as by 2050 India will almost double its present urban population by adding another 450 million.
It is this urbanization that will also be its major driver of economic growth. But even if we find the money where is the public administration to do it? We now have a highly centralized system more suitable to governing India than serving India. The structure of our public administration with its preponderance at the national and state capitals and with a tiny fraction left to interface with citizens at a local level, and even these not being answerable to citizens is at the root of our inability to transform this country. When India became independent, Jawaharlal Nehru advocated disbanding the British inherited civil service and wanted a new system of public administration that will not just preserve order to facilitate extraction, but will drive change and equitable development.

Out of places I have visited and remember, maybe Thailand or Romania. I think they do clear the streets pretty regularly in Thailand, but it got pretty smelly sometimes.
There a lot of tourists, and also a lot of street food stalls in Thai cities. They will be cooking up stir-fries for hours on end and they do not seem to take their trash with them. This is probably a system, and the way they do things though. I think they leave it all out and the local dustcarts come and pick it up at some point. It is bagged, but often seeping out. The rats can be scary too if you brush against the bags by mistake.
There are specific areas that do this. One area for example would be Khao San road. There are entire streets with vendors in them too. A lot of them are food types, so their trash i soften very smelly, and seeping out of the bags.
Romania (Bucharest) was pretty dirty and shabby looking when I visited. I do not know what it is like now.

Surprisingly, it was Germany! I landed in the Frankfurt airport for a plane change in… maybe 2003 or 2004? And the cigarette smoke INSIDE THE TERMINAL was the worst I have ever experienced in my life, and I was born in the 70s to a family of chain smokers and clubbed as a young person in bars before smoking was banned inside. It was brown, the air itself had this brown haze. Absolutely sickening - literally, as I have bad asthma.
Another thing I saw that surprised me during the same trip was on Crete, in Greece: rows and rows of old shops that looked like they’d been bombed out and they still had all their merchandise in them like the people had just walked away from selling when it happened and never come back. Very dusty, dirty, lots of broken glass. Looked like they’d been there for years like that.

It's been a long, long time (1968 & 1969). But I was only 5 and 6 years old and was stationed in Bangkok, Thailand with my family from The United States. My dad was in The US Air Force and was assigned duty at the US Embassy in Bangkok. It was so drastically different than anyplace else in the world that we'd been to. The Klongs(open sewage and waterways) still being used by locals for bathing, laundry and recreating. Actually my first place I ever saw live, adult nude women. Standing on the sides of the Klongs bathing. Topless as they did laundry on the sides while another watched for wildlife. Poisonous snakes, Crocs, etc. My dad told me at the time. I spent most my time on the Embassy grounds but went to an Indian Ladies Private School across town. The bus trips to and from school where burnt into my memory as scenes I still see today some 50+ years later. I've been all over the world and seen just as bad including The Philippines, Haitie, Domenican Republic and throughtout Mexico on mission trips that are as bad or worse. But my time in Thailand in the late 60’s are the images that are hard to beat.
当地人仍然在Klongs(露天下水道和水路)中洗澡、洗衣服和娱乐。
