Tbh I didn’t use to tip before covid unless when really impressed by the service. My partner always gives tip which I would follow
What I noticed in the last years was some restaurants became a bit passive aggressive in asking for a tip. Some would cancel the ‘do you want to tip screen’ or others just wait for you to press a yes or a no. One restaurant even had the tipping screen with the tip percentage and ‘reactions’ like 0%, 5% Meh, 10% Thank you!

I’m commenting from an Australian point of view as we’ve had tipping culture creeping in for a few years now, I think it’s insidious and not compatible with my country.
I don’t feel like anyone should get tips for simply doing their job, you’re already compensated for your time and effort via wages.
If staff are paid appropriately in the first place there’s not even a need for tipping.
I’m not sure if it’s a similar case in Ireland but here the tips usually just go to the business not the individual wait staff.

There’s a big difference between a waiter who doesn’t give a shit and a waiter who’s going above and beyond to ensure you’re having a pleasant experience. That’s where tipping comes in, waiters who just do their job get the base salary, waiters who do a good job get a bit more. Businesses taking tips used to be a problem in Ireland however the practice has been outlawed a few years ago. Staff get the tips now by law

Of course, but that shouldn’t come from the customer.
Doing your job well should be the standard anyway regardless of industry, but I understand the importance praise has on staff morale, even things like gift cards for example from employers are a good incentive to not slack off.

I suppose it’s hard for recognition to be passed on unless customers are asked for reviews after every meal… a tip is an easy way to show roughly how good the service was besides otherwise employers would just pass on the tips in higher prices. There’s no such thing as a free lunch so to speak

Customers don’t tip supermarket check out workers for doing a good job, why is it any different?
At the end of the day, staff need to be paid adequately BY THEIR EMPLOYER for the job that they are being paid to do regardless of industry/job.

I haven't waited tables myself in years. But when I did it wasn't expected. It was nice, sure, but not that big a deal.

This was ages ago. Like possibly 10+ years ago, but my family didn't tip in a Mexican restaurant in Dublin city centre because they had a service charge. We assumed the service charge was the tip. The waiter started shouting at us as we were leaving. It was something along the lines of "what's your fuckin problem?! What did I do to you?! My service wasnt good enough?!" etc. etc.
Weird experience. I've never seen anything like that since then and I've worked in bars/clubs myself which I never got any tips from.

That waiter was a cunt and if it was me I would have gone to his manager and explained exactly why I wouldn't be returning and telling everyone I know to avoid the place (I wouldn't actually follow through with the tarnishing their name I would just want them to understand what accepting that sort of behaviour from their wait staff could do to their business).
Tipping is 100% not compulsory here and as soon as someone expects one from me they don't get one.

I am an American but those automated systems with pre calculated tips are becoming ubiquitous, even in places that didn’t traditionally get tips. Then I realized the payment processors that created those devices gets percentage of all the money run through them so by pushing up to 25% or even more for a tip they are making a lot kore money in transaction fees. If and when I tip now I zero out the charge on the machine and just leave cash as the tip so I know it actually all goes to the wait staff and not fucking Visa.

As an American, don't let this get out of control like we did. It's been insanity ever since covid when people became more generous out of pity for the service workers losing their livelihoods, now it can't be rolled back. 20% to restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, barber, taxi, car wash, etc. Bonkers. Where I'm from if the menu says your meal is $20 you can expect + 8.25% tax + 4% service fee + 20% tip (on the after-tax total). So about $27.

I really think it's because (I'm in Ireland here) we grew up watching so much US-based TV and media that people think tipping is a thing here. We love to import American-isms over here. Our country is obsessed with the US.
Tipping makes absolutely no sense whatsoever in places where there are minimum wage laws and the people working there don't rely or need to rely on tips.
That said, I am guilty of it myself and will often just round up. Unless the service is actually bad (which is incredibly rare).

Here the tax (VAT) is 13.5% for food services, 23% on some items like soft drinks. So you're paying more baseline from the start.
Feel like some of the employment culture here should be exported to the US so it dilutes some of the things that make life harder for US workers. Basic things like 20 days guaranteed off a year, maternity leave, tips not making up your base wage, etc. For the customers, advertising the real price would also be nice, can't understand not having that whenever I visit the US.

The tipping issue... I'm only commenting here because the German flag is in the picture.
Here it was customary to give a tip for good service. For small sums, like a coffee for 1.80€, you rounded up, for larger bills the general view was to give 10%. But it was also okay not to tip.
But in recent years, an expectation of tipping has become widespread that I find somewhat absurd. Even for bad service or no service at all, tips are expected. In some cases, the staff demand a massive tip, with buttons on the display and the like.
Personally, I resist this and only tip if the service is good.

I tip in a Michelin star restaurant I go to once a year.

We have a minimum wage in Ireland, people don't get paid 3 euro an hour. Tipping is an absolute scourge (ask anyone from the USA) and is slowing creeping in here.
And I don't agree with tipping for "exceptional service" as people are then just artificially creating fake smiles and all that shit for extra tipping money. I just expect "good service", I order, you do the job you're employed to do, bring me my shit, I eat, I pay my money and leave. Same with cutting my hair. Same with my mechanic.
If you keep tipping then people keep expecting it and then businesses use it as a tactic to artificially keep wages lower as employees get "loads of money from tips shur".
I'm starting to see the payment screen being at the tipping % screen in a few places these days and have got the eye roll a few times when I press zero.
Look up the expectations of who expects tips in the USA now and the typical tipping amounts. It's insane.

I've never tipped as most places include a charge for large groups.
I don't think any waiter/waitress in Ireland is going to say or do anything if you don't tip it's not really a thing imo.

I don't think it's something we can blame on tourists. I worked in a hotel nearly 20 years ago and regularly made a couple hundred quid each week in tips. It might have only been 1 or 2 people out of every 5 that were tipping, but it's always existed.
I've never really found it to be an expectation though, or at least I've never seen an encounter where someone was criticised for not tipping.

They are absolutely not paid “properly”. Most are on minimum wage. Between the housing crisis & cost of living, that is poverty wages. There shouldn’t and isn’t an expectation to tip but don’t sooth your conscious with the idea that hospitality staff get anywhere close of a wage that can be lived on comfortably

It’s not at all expected, nor should be considered part of our culture.
Having said that, I always do because it’s a tough job, it’s shitty dealing with the public, I like to make peoples day a little bit better and I’m a little older and better paid. People in service jobs have it tough.

My problem with that is what about staff working in shops, Tesco etc. Also a shitty job where you deal with the public but you’re not gonna get tips there.

When you eat out, you want the experience to be enjoyable. Your waiter plays a big part in that. Maybe they recommend you a nice dish, or maybe they make sure your drink is never empty, or maybe they allow you to order something not on the menu. Their service can make or break the evening, so I never have a problem leaving them a tip if they've done it well.
Unfortunately, if you work in Tesco, the most you'll be doing is dealing with me for a minute or two while you scan a few items. It's not the same type of service and it's difficult to do it badly enough that it ruins my day.

I hate leaving a tip, it's not needed, you get paid a wage, that's your tip. Nobody tips me for doing my job.
