What makes the US healthcare system so expensive?

As an American, why do you prefer the current healthcare system, as opposed to universal healthcare?
The people I know who prefer it are angry Baby Boomers on Medicare who now rage against the system they benefitted from so much.
Let me share a sad story of American healthcare with you. Several years ago I was dropping a kind young woman off after an attempted date that went awful for us both. It was around 0200, Sunday morning, and while driving her back we came across a motor vehicle that had ran highway speed into the concrete Support, the guard rail crumped entirely. No ambulances were on the scene.
I was in the army at the time, wasn’t drunk, and went through CLS. Not being drunk made me the most qualified person on the scene to help. I got her out of the car (she had to be removed from the vehicle) and a safe distance away. She was still conscious the whole time, and crying hysterically. What she said still makes me sad. When she realized people were calling 911, she started screaming at them to stop.
An ambulance arrived and she declined service. The EMT’s said they couldn’t do that, and they loaded this poor girl into the back of the ambulance, with several broken ribs, deep bruising on her knees and thighs, as she cried not because of the pain, but because she had no insurance to pay for anything.
That is America’s health care system. A system that bankrupts people to the point they would rather lay on the side of the road and die. How people can live with themselves supporting this system is beyond me.
Edit: wow, this answer really blew up! 1k upvotes. Thank you all for reading and the comments are greatly appreciated.

As a European, would you prefer the US healthcare system?
I lived in America for a few years, and one day through lack of attention while making dinner, I cut into my hand and almost sliced off a finger. In the hospital I required numerous stitches, and my health insurance provider found a way not to pay. I ended up having to go out of pocket by nearly $12000 for a dozen stitches, a bandage, antibiotics and some anaesthetic. By contrast, almost twenty years of living in Britain cost me less than $1000 for medical treatments; I have to pay for prescxtions and nothing else. I cannot fathom how any sane human could believe the American system to be superior.

Why are some Americans so opposed to universal healthcare?
I know that this is going to come off as indecorous, but I'm gonna go ahead and answer with it anyway
Americans are opposed to universal healthcare because the post-Reagan United States is full of a few things that will most likely never be dislodged from the national unus mundus: greed, deception, wrath, stupidity, judgement, and selfishness. It's simply become terribly good business to exploit others, their desperation, and their misfortune for personal profit. What are you gonna do, move to another country? Live in the street? You have no real choice while you live here and the powers that profit from the system know that
The program in place for decades has been to accelerate the extraction any kind of profit possible from any system imaginable. Who cares if your kids have an education, a job, or health coverage? Who cares if they have a home or food? For that matter, who cares if you do? Who cares if you retire after your body is ruined? Who cares if your kids go to college? Who cares if they have jobs? Who cares whether or not the system is structured to provide all the things people thought the US would in a past age of optimism?

Welcome to the real America, where people work multiple low wage jobs just to stay broke at the end of every month until they die. Where people give the better part of their lives to companies that terminate them with expert timing so they don't have to pay for their retirement or the damage they've incurred to their bodies. Where student loans crush those trying to benefit their nation or their economy or their world for decades, loans some will take to their graves. And those are the fortunate few who are even actually able to secure enough financing to attend school or complete degrees! Welcome to the world of sprawling homeless camps that only grow, constantly bemoaned by a nose-wrinkling class of citizens that are themselves a few poor turns of fortune from joining them. Welcome to a land where real wages, compensation, and benefits have fallen while the costs of basics have skyrocketed. Welcome to a land where public investments and the administration of any remaining public good is transferred over to some billionaire fop that’s never done anything of real significance but somehow has an axe to grind using the bones of the citizenry. Welcome to a land where organizations will spend billions to ensure that the members of groups that they dislike have no dignity or protection under the law. Welcome to a land that will kill its own through neglect a thousand or a million times before it will discontinue the production of a fighter jet that doesn't work and will only ever rot in a boneyard. Welcome to a land that will fatally shoot you even when you aren't involved in a crime or an investigation or are even complying entirely with police instructions. Welcome to a land of urban neglect and decay, and the outright condemnation of the people who have no choice but to live there. Welcome to a land that will consistently choose the most poorly structured, most expensive, and least efficient system every single time because the alternative might unduly benefit an Other.

Why would anyone who understands the true lack of care for one another that is prent in the US assume any of us have the capability to create a system of universal health coverage?
Want to know the best part about all of it? Despite all of this, the nation has a built-in fleet of enthusiastic headbobbers (and aspiring immigrants) that will hoot and holler endlessly about how great the place is.

What are some of the biggest problems with America's health care system?
Price and outcomes.
The US has incredibly expensive health care. I mean incredibly expensive. Health care is one of the biggest for-profit industries in the country. A long time ago, some enterprising capitalists figured out that if you sell a product that people have to have or they will literally die, if you conceal the price of the product, and if you design the product in such a way that people can’t comparison shop, you can charge any price you want.
As a result, well…
A few weeks ago, I slipped with a razor knife and cut myself at the base of my thumb. I needed four stitches.
The stitches were removed two days ago. It really wasn’t that big a deal:
So far, I have received two bills.
This for four stitches and a tetanus booster. Total price (so far):
$2,603.45.
I do qualify for subsidized insurance under the ACA. My price for a basic plan is $570/month with a $6,000 deductible.

Conservatives blather about how the US has such expensive healthcare because it’s sooooo good and American hospitals have the best equipment and Americans do all this research and…
Ah HA ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
Some of them, they…they actually…BWAH ha ha ha…they actually believe that.
This torrent of money doesn’t go into healthcare. A huge volume of it goes into health insurance profits. Every dollar an insurance company takes in profit or overhead is a dollar that isn’t going to treatment and isn’t going to pretty shiny machines that go beep and isn’t going to research.
Libertarians love to talk about how the market promotes efficiency. Which is true. It promotes efficiency at making profit, which is not necessarily the same as efficiency at delivering goods and services.

LOL

The outcomes of this system are plain:
Shorter lifespan than other developed countries
Higher infant mortality than other countries
Evidence demolishes ideology. If the US had cutting edge healthcare, you would expect it to be expensive but effective.
It’s not. It’s expensive but delivers inferior results.
Part of that is the unequal access, of course, but part of it is by design. Because the goal of American healthcare is profit, not treatment, it discourages preventive care and regular checkups, which are low-margin services, in favor of dramatic interventions for serious conditions, which are high-margin services.
This isn’t a grand conspiracy. It’s the natural consequence of a system tuned to maximize profit instead of maximizing number of people cared for.

As a European, would you prefer the US healthcare system?
Two years ago, I was found to have cancer. I live in the country and as I started to pee blood in my urine at 3am, an ambulance came to pick me up 40 minutes later. I was hospitalized in emergency, ultrasound at 7am, MRI around 11am, multiple biological tests, decision of surgery in late afternoon. Heavy surgery 3 days later, hospitalization for 3 weeks, chemotherapy for 10 weeks, various treatments. I was in an individual room (Cable TV, Wifi) where my wife joined me to support me.
Unluckily, I did not bear the pain well and had a depression and stopped working for 6 months. Care, psychological follow-up, staying at home. I went back to work part time, my employer had no right to fire me and was compensated. After a year, I went back to work full time. During all this time, I have of course received my full salary.

At the end of the year, I received the bill, or rather the "rest to pay", at my expense. 360 Euros (320 US$) corresponding to the 18 nights during which an additional bed had been installed for my wife in my room.
I contribute 9.7% of my monthly salary, because it is obviously not fixed but proportional to the salary received.
Seriously, do you have something better to offer me?
Let this true story help you understand why ALL developed countries have such a system, except the Americans who prefer to fatten a few big companies that offer them a shitty service. I lived in California for 6 years, I know what it's like.

Anthony Lawson
Why are some Americans so opposed to universal healthcare?
As a Physician, a USA Naval Officer and an American, I can say it is because we are SELFISH.
We have been raised on the American myth of the rugged individualist. That we get ahead in life by pulling up our bootstraps and britches or the Calvinist ideal of “ the lord help those who help themselves”
On the other hand, look at nations with universal healthcare and you see that the welbeing of the Nation supersedes the individual. Which in turn feeds the healthcare of the individual.
