I live in Hawaii, USA. My home town, Honolulu, is a tourist destination for people from all over Asia, especially China. One thing I have noticed is that Chinese tourists usually come in groups and they do everything together, including dine.

American restaurants aren’t friendly to large groups of people. We like small groups so that we can fill lots of tables and turn them over quickly. That’s how we make money and that’s how most Americans eat. A couple or two goes out, eats and leaves.

As I said, dining is a large scale social affair for many Chinese tourists. They go out in groups and spend a long time in the restaurant eating and talking. American restaurants aren’t conducive to this type of behavior, but Chinese restaurants are.

There is a very popular Chinese restaurant near me called Fook Yuen Seafood Restaurant. It is always packed with Chinese tourists doing exactly what I described.

Fook Yuen is always packed and I know they clean up.

People congregate where they are most comfortable. It’s human nature.

Because I'm (expletive dexed) poor.

Usually when I have the materials and time, it is much cheaper to prepare food myself — and I only trust myself to cook Chinese.

Lund, Sweden: typical Cantonese dish, made with European ingredients

If I don't have time, then it's fine to try local cuisines … or something else. I have done Italian in Poland, Turkish in Germany, Japanese in Austria.

A second reason:

Brno, Czechia: A typical Czech fast food dish. The Czech dude sitting next to me was eating Chinese in the same food court. Imagine this: a Chinese person eating Czech and a Czech person eating Chinese sitting next to each other.

‘Cos why not?

In some countries, even their own people don't like their own cuisines. Czech farmer-cuisine, low in vegetables and heavy in gravy, is one of them (at least, according to Wikivoyage). I quite like the Czech bread dumplings, though.

I prefer not to speculate on the reasons why other people behave the way they do, so I will be using my father as an example in examining the veracity of the assumption in the question.

Firstly, I don’t think my dad always only eats Chinese food when traveling.

It depends where he’s traveling.

Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam?

He has absolute ZERO problems eating the local cuisines (although his tolerance for spicy food is very low, so he’ll stay away from most spicy food)

But when you bring him to Europe….

You know, he and my mom met when they were studying in London, so you’d think that he’d be okay with eating “Western” and European food, right?

But when he and my mother visited me when I was in Munich, I secretly wondered how long he would hold out before mentioning Chinese food.

The answer: Until the third day.

First two days, not a word from him.

He was fine with eating German food.
No complaints.
No comparisons to Chinese food.
Nothing.
Silence on the radar.
Not a sound, not a beep.

And then on the third day, he was like “Can we go somewhere for Chinese food? Or at least Asian food?”

So he managed to hold out until the third day.

We walked into this hole-in-the-wall place in the city that looked as it could barely fit 30 people in it.

It wasn’t even a Chinese restaurant.
It was one of those “Asian” restaurants.

You know what I mean - you look at the menu and you see Chinese dishes nestled next to Japanese dishes nestled next to Vietnamese dishes nestled next to Malaysian dishes.
Sushi perching next to pho perching next to nasi lemak perching next to spring rolls.

The waiter was pretty rude and gave my dad a bollocking when my dad had the effrontery to ask for hot tap water.

And the food wasn’t even that great.
My dad ordered some noodles and the portion was small and looked pretty much like:

But my dad didn’t care.

He wolfed it all down with a satisfied smile tugging at the corners of his lips.

When he was eating, his entire mien underwent a radical shift.

It was as if we had all stepped into a frozen moment of peace and serenity after a harrowing excursion into the heart of Mordor itself.

Beams of sunlight from the vast Heavens bent and tugged until they crowned his head with a glowing halo. Birds chirped merrily as they danced on the boughs of evergreen trees. Somewhere in the distance, you could pick out the soft susurrus of a waterfall and the splish and splash of a magnificent koi as it reached out for the Heavens before rejoining its brethren back in a calm and placid koi pond.

My mother would have held out for longer. But eventually, she would say something along the lines of “I just want to have a quiet Chinese/Japanese meal” and we would then go hunting for another Chinese or Japanese restaurant, or failing to find any that met my mother’s approval, probably head back to their rented apartment and whip something up ourselves.

See, my dad is quite picky with his food.

He doesn’t like food with dairy products, so no cream, cheese, milk, etc. (except when my mom makes her doria. Now that he’ll happily eat. I guess it’s because my mom made it, although to be fair, her doria is pretty kick-ass)

He’s not a big meat eater - he’ll always want his green leafy veggies, or at least just veggies in general.

He loves having Chinese-style soups and broths.

And while he can eat bread and potatoes for a couple of days, if he’s eating only that as his carb-source, he’ll soon develop this ravenous hunger for rice, noodles, and mantou (Chinese bread).

No Chinese food around?
Then we go somewhere with Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Malaysian, Singaporean food.

Well, holding out for three days is still pretty impressive for him.
See, I was expecting him to cave on the second day.

It’s not just Chinese people.

I’ve traveled overseas on music tours and on bus tours, in addition to traveling independently. On tours, without fail, the bus would stop for a meal and most of the Americans on board would shuffle off in a pack toward Pizza Hut or McDonald’s (“at last! real coffee!”) whereas my husband and I would consult our Rick Steves book, or just follow people who appeared to be locals, and invariably we would end up somewhere quaint, local, authentic. And some of our bus mates would start to tail us, after hearing of our mostly delightful meals. The rest would grumble on the bus about the pizza being “wrong” or the coffees being too small. I wondered why they bothered traveling.

My favorite of these stories is when we stopped shortly after entering France. The group shuffled off to either McDonald’s or Burger King, I forget which, while we toddled off to a tiny little cafe. We ordered two cafes, which were accompanied (to our great pleasure) by a plate of fresh-from-the-oven croissants. Oh my! A couple of our mates saw us and followed suit, the rest got to hear us yammer on and on about our delightful snack. Turns out that they didn’t care for the tiny cups of strong coffee, their loss.
