Where I grew up it was a very small town and poor. There was a Meijer (kinda like Walmart) about 30 minutes away by car. If you didn't have a car your only real option was dollar general which was mostly highly processed foods
有一家 Meijer(类似于沃尔玛)需要开车30分钟才能到达。

I live in a rural area, about 30 mins from the nearest big box store, and a dollar general just opened up near me like 5 minutes down the road. The crazy thing is they actually have a small produce section. I’m sure this is pretty rare currently and the stuff on offer is very limited and expensive. We’re talking like a few small bunches of bananas, a few small avocados, little cart of tomatos, and a handful of potatos. There’s also a few premade salads and fruit cups. They’re small and probably cost at least 40%-50% more than what you pay by driving to town to buy groceries. So on one hand it’s nice that the option is there but it also is yet another example of healthy options being way more expensive than the junk food that takes no time to prepare.

As a truck driver, fuck dollar general. I will never shop there again. I arrived to their warehouse 2 hours early, they said I have to park and wait, I can't check in until my exact appointment time. I had driven hard as fuck for 3 days to get there on time. I fell asleep and missed my appointment time by 15 minutes. So they said I missed my appointment time, and I had to reschedule. They rescheduled me for 2 days later. Ok, I fucked up and fell asleep, whatever. I check in at my exact new appointment time. Noone touched my trailer for 3 hours after appointment time. 6 hours later they unloaded my trailer.

I work in an Amazon yard, and live loads can usually come in a few hours early, get checked in, and just wait for the phone call. If a box truck door is open, we just put those guys on then and there. I mean, don't show up 6 hours ahead of time (which I've had people do) 'cuase now I'm going to get in trouble, but yeah generally just check in and hang out.
Now mind you...depending on the freight we might not have any room on the floor (literally) to unload you because we have no racking in our building...or the belts break....or night shift left days with a shitty hand off...but as far as checking in our building is pretty cool with it.

Just..if you're running late have someone call and tell them, or its a No Call No Show...and that's a hard NO to come in at that point.

I used to drive for them when Schneider was one of their carriers. Several times the stores wouldn't even let me use their restroom after driving hours to get there. They are supposed to assist with unload at the stores. I'd show up & there would be one employee that had to run cash register so I'd have to unload myself. Which meant making me late to the next and me losing money because I wasn't rolling. They are truly awful to the drivers.

My dad long haul trucked for decades. He said he always had $500 in cash to pay whatever laborers were around to unload his trucks for him when stores were slow or incompatable with the task. Lol. He had some funny stories.
Dark turn, he's dead. Everybody hug your parents!

Dollar General has taken over small town markets where people would have to drive probably 20 minutes more at least to get to a WalMart or other grocery store. DG is cashing in on those markets. AND the stores in smaller towns Jack up their prices, I’ve actually comparison shopped with my sister (small town) and myself in DGs at the same time, my DG is about 5 minutes away from WalMart. Hers is about 30 minutes from any other grocery store. Some of the items we looked at were $3 more expensive at her store. Everything was actually marked higher, $3 was just the most egregious. Lol

Dollar General is slowly but surely being litigated against in WV. It’s literally destroying communities and some of the communities are growing wise to it.

They are and it’s due to the overhead. It costs very little to get a dollar general up and running compared to a Walmart let alone a super Walmart. And they are typically worked by one person at a time. They are a financial black hole for communities that are already not doing great.

I heard the CEO crowing about how they profit most when times are hardest and people are struggling most. In the same story they covered how poorly the staff are treated (being forced to cover entire stores alone, low wages etc) and that most of the ‘low priced’ options there are actually not, they’re just smaller amounts that actually end up more expensive when compared to regular stores. I won’t shop there again.

They are also claiming to be more proactive about adding fresher foods to theirs stores to offer more healthy options in areas where there aren't a lot. I'm sure that is just them trying to save face. It is a serious problem. When I lived in a poor area of Minneapolis the only places I could walk to were a sketchy bodega, a dollar tree and a cvs. The bodega occasionally had fruit and they all had milk and cheese but aside from that it was super processed (so was the cheese and milk tbh). I was fortunate that I was just young, not poor and had a vehicle to drive to a grocery store.

In case someone hasn't mentioned it, definitely watch John Oliver's segment on Dollar Stores. They suck for all the reasons mentioned in this thread, but for so many other reasons too.

What's so bad about having to drive 20 minutes? Obviously if you live far away from stuff you need a car anyway and can just drive there. Like I grew up in a remote mountain in the Countryside. Had a grand total of 2 neighbors. Nearest two grocery stores was a 20 minute drive away or 20km away. Yeah the sextion wasn't great or anything and definitely not as cheap as some other larger chains that can afford to keep prices lower because of more customers, but it wasn't insanely expensive or anything. My mom would go grocery shopping there after work once a week or once every other week because she worked in the village the grocery store was in. We always had healthy food growing up. Yeah maybe not fresh produce with everything but that wasn't needed either. Like we'd have canned food every now and then and meat and potatoes were a staple, ao were fish sticks and casseroles. My parents weren't wealthy or anything, but we still had fairly healthy food on the table.

It's quite fascinating how you entirely missed the point because you were too focused on making it about you...
Choosing to live in a very rural, remote area far from everything is entirely different from having a shitty discount chain move in and replace all your actual groceries. If you move to that rural area far away from everything, you're prepared to drive for your groceries. In the latter situation, you may not have time or fuel money to drive 40 minutes every time you need to pick up some groceries. And do remember that the topic of this post is about poverty.

I've been poor. I've moved away from places to new places, precisely because I was poor and didn't have work opportunities out in the countryside where I used to live. What I don't get is why people don't find ways to scrap some money together and move if the place they live isn't liveable anymore. I scraped money together doing odd jobs because I was poor and moved.

If you're so poor you can barely make ends meet, you're unlikely to be able to get into a nicer area these days. Also people can get quite attached to their homes. It's quite a brutal upheaval to have to give up your home while grinding yourself to the bone in order to try to move somewhere a bit better. And that doesn't get into moving far away from family, including people who might be under your care, and more. It could help you a lot to learn to see people's experiences outside your own.

There are plenty of small towns and villages that are affordable to live in that aren't necessarily nice areas but have accessible jobs and shops. I've had to give up plenty of homes and grind like crazy to turn my life around but it was worth it. I've been willing to move cross country for opportunities. I've had to move away from family too, just to have a good job. That's just life. It was either stay poor or move away someplace that offered me a good job even if it was on the other side of the country. I guess some people rather stay with family even if it means being poor though. That's their choice. If there's one thing I know is that sacrifices are often required. I guess some people would rather sacrifice good job opportunities to not have to move and stay with family. That's their choice of course.

People on Reddit like to pretend that people like you don't exist. That poverty is some inescapable thing that happens to people by chance.
Don't sweat it if you continue to get down voted for telling your story. You just don't fit into their political narrative.

Don't sweat it if you continue to get down voted for telling your story. You just don't fit into their political narrative.

Yeah I'm aware. As long as you're not disabled and unable to work, you can move. It's just a matter of will at that point.
I used to tell myself lame stories when I was broke and poor that I couldn't find work and that I was unable to work. Like I get it. People get stuck in a defeatist mindset. I did too. Then I broke that mentality and now I work and I'm no longer poor, so I think that goes for any able bodied able minded person.

Healthy food? No fresh produce ? Fish sticks? European here… doesn’t sound healthy whatsoever

Well, we didn't grow up fat at least. There wasn't the super sugary fatty foods you get nowadays at least. We had maybe salad with lasagna once a week on a Saturday and that was it. Occasionally the frozen American veggie mix with our meat and potatoes. Everyone who thinks you need fresh produce to stay healthy is just wrong. My dad grew up on a farm and they had meat and potatoes and fish during the winter. Little to no produce at all. Our health was just fine.
No wonder people think they can't be healthy if they think they need to have fresh produce with every meal.

People assume "driving 20 minutes" is the same as commuting that same distance without a vehicle. Try having your bicycle stolen, too... Crap weeks happen sometimes.
There's being poor in rural areas and there's being poor in urban-ish areas.
Think lower wage workers servicing the businesses and attractions in the city who can't afford saving to relocate the family they support (in 5 years or less as an example). If you've been in some of those neighborhoods, there may not be as much additional time in the day to research how to manage money efficiently for big life changes when it may not be as obvious to them. There also may not be generational good habits to learn from either.
Long way of saying on both the east and west coast of the U.S., cost of living on city outskirts is just as difficult as city proper and may be more if factoring the "time is money" adage.

They are in different situations and lifestyles.
People struggling to get enough food to eat will be skinny
People with poor access to healthy food options, poor education and time-poor will often end up overweight.
