Being lazy but obsessed with the language made her win the championship. languages are best absorbed by our brains when we are less conscious (consciousness: active state of studying such as grammar sessions). The most interesting part is that practicing the language with exercises that require the least amount of effort makes you absorb the language better and activate the language in your brain meaning that you will start thinking in the language rather than translating what you want to say in your brain from your native language to the target language. Congratulations on her win, she is a great example of how learning a language out of love makes you achieve wonders

Most people will learn Japanese, not Chinese. Very few westerns want to learn Chinese.

@abcdefg-oj5wn
I’m Chinese but living in America, so I can really only speak English (and am currently learning Chinese). It’s cool that you can understand so many languages. I wish I knew how to speak Japanese as well. Wish you the best in your language studies!

@paysanfrancais7045
@user-pc9yj4my2y where do you get your information about “most” and “very few”? How many people do you “know” in this world?

Even her English is good!! She’s mastered not one but multiple foreign languages :)

@YogaBlissDance
A native English speaker here, what's telling is her command of English- she is able to make jokes and apply nuance and that impresses me, early on she jokes and even mixes in a bit of French mannerism in English which only an educated speaker might do. So I can only imagine how good her command of a natural way of speaking Chinese is!

@nourbenziadalanguages

According to my experience in learning Chinese until now, I feel like I'm following the right strategies to learn more and improve because everything she is saying I do it omg even emotions while studying . I really love Chinese lang and culture .anyways wish me luck to learn more and be a teacher of Chinese lang as long as I'm a polyglot and a language teacher,and a translator . I'll thank both of you for your special pieces of advice ️. I love u Zoe and I really follow and apply your golden methods.

I really like the "lazy" approach.
If you do things you hate, you will quit soon.
If you do things you like, you will continue forever.

The idea of learning vocabulary being 'adding to the puzzle' is brilliant wow. More puzzle pieces you add, the more complete picture you have!!

Seeing and listening to cases like her makes me think that everything is possible and that any obstacles are the excuses that you impose on yourself. Wonderful video as always.

Thank you for - once again - a very clearly structured and informative video!
In your video, you make the distinction between a language one is passionate about and a language one's learn because it is beneficial.
This distinction is striking a cord for me. As a French native speaker, speaking English and German at a quite advanced level, I wanted to learn Spanish because it seemed quite beneficial to add this to my skills. And I failed! I was not really motivated and just let it be after only a few weeks.
On the contrary I started learning Korean, which is - compared to Spanish for me as a Feench native speaker - way more complex. It has now been 4 years and I am still absolutely in love with the language. The main difference is that I actually never really DECIDED to learn Korean. I just fell in love with it on a totally random encounter and then kept investing time with the language. It never ever felt like learning. I just loved every minute.
I think that distinction is a key difference between people who keep going on and those who stop at some point.
As much as I would love to be able to speak Spanish, I just don't habe that drive to actually really learn it. I think that's the hardest part sometime to accept: we CANNOT really decide when or in which language we fall in love with. I guess it's like falling in love with someone. We cannot force each other when it comes to passion.
So if you struggle and don't really feel passionate about the language you are learning, maybe accepting it and leaving as it is, might be the best decision? Who knows, some day you might encounter a language and fall in love with it unexpectedly? Then everything will be easier and it won't feel like studying at all

I began studying russian after i achieved a very decent level in English and each time i listen to something about Chinese i feel motivated to work harder on my russian because i stricted myself not to do any Chinese until i have a decent level in russian as well

The benifit of Chinese is that you dont need to memorize that many words. Simply combine two or three character you get the word, and you know the meaning intuitively.

You want to understand a language that will give you depth whereby you'll be able to understand hidden meanings? Classical Arabic. Arabic has diacritics and dots, but in the past, they used to write Arabic without diacritics and dots. If you learn Arabic, then learn it first with dots and diacritics, but if you're done, then go to the next level by understanding Arabic without diacritics and dots. This way you will maximize your depth. Your contextual comprehension will become better. Why is this? For example; without dots, the Arabic B, T and TH look exactly the same. So if you read without dots, you'll have to figure out the context by digging. It's like a code language. A secret language. Lots of letters will resemble each other without dots in Arabic. Classical Arabic without dots makes you dig, and this is good for creativity.
