CNBC:Prices at limited-service restaurants including Wendy's, Taco Bell, Chick-fil-A and Chipotle have increased more over the past decade than both full-service restaurants and overall inflation, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Experts say rising labor costs are the main culprit. McDonald's underwhelming first-quarter 2024 earnings results are one example of a fast-food giant feeling the repercussions of its soaring prices. Watch the video to learn more.

I spent 16$ on 3 items from Taco Bell last week. Chik fila is charging nearly $4 just for a large drink full of ice. It’s insane.
@BeachLookingGuy

Subway is ridiculous here in Canada they want almost 20 bucks for one foot long sandwich get the hell out of here.

@mediasheeple6143
Prices go up while i've still seen people who work at mcdonalds and only make $10/hr

Can you explain why wages are higher in other countries and the menu prices are still lower?

@AuspexAO
Um yeah, bro. Americans tolerate corporate greed more because we worship the dollar. If you're wealthy in America, you can be president. No other qualifications are needed because having cash equals virtue and intelligence.

@xlerb2286
We've quit going to any fast food places. There's just no reason. Their advantages were they were fast, convenient, and cheaper. They aren't fast anymore, their hours at least where we live have been cut way back, quality is down, locations have closed, prices are through the roof, and now many places are pressuring you to tip. So they aren't convenient or cheap either. There are plenty of full service restaurants that offer way better food for similar prices and in a similar period of time. I do miss McD's fries, but not enough to want to go there.

@Deedaz
Executive compensation is too high, franchise fees are too high, advertising spending is too high, but sure blame the people wanting more than 12 bucks an hour.

@kobebryant7116
They raised minimum wage a few bucks then doubled everything in price…. We went backwards…. Life was so much better before 2020

@TheEMNLee
CEO of Burger King makes $60,000/hr but yeah, let's blame the guy that makes $15/hr.

@mind-of-neo
I am sick and tired of workers being blamed for being "paid too much" The idea that a big mac has to cost 15 dollars for workers to be paid 15/hr is absolutely insane. These corporations are ROLLING in dough, they are not strapped for cash. They are doing this out of greed.

@BigSneed404
They'll keep raising prices so long as you keep buying.

@slaction
The real issue is that it's just not worth it. The fast food places were never actually great, they were just cheap. When you take cheap away there is zero reason to ever go there.

@aimeelee76
I love how they keep saying that WAGES are the big reason for the price increases but then fail to mention record corporate profits. We see you, CNBC.

@tobiramasenju6290
They aren't even subtle about it. Funny part is most places outside of California haven't seen a wage increase in over a decade.

@Arigator2
The food quality has gone way down too. McDonald's gives you a cold burger that has been sitting for an hour. It's barely food.

@DixieChiweenie88
No one eats McDonalds because it’s good, they ate it because it was cheap.

@ADreamingTraveler
100% right. People went there because it was cheap and a quick meal you didn't have to prepare yourself.

@kma3647
The fries used to be good, then they took the beef flavoring out because of whining from Muslims and vegans.

@salmansengul
I love how pretty much all comments are like: "Yeah the prices are ridiculous etc..." Who the Heck pays for these meals then if not us? Just don't go there!

@erijahc
Solution? STOP BUYING. Let's see if they don't lower their prices after that.

@thefox47545
Been doing it since last year. Hope they feel the pinch, but I’m only one guy. We need more people.

@aanandax
That’s what we did in India. I remember some years ago when Mcdonalds had to close a few of their locations cause they started charging way higher prices and people were just not buying it. Now they’ve started discounts and deals on their app and it’s pretty cheap (as fast food should be). So yeah if the people stop buying they’ve got no option but to lower the prices overall.

@wristfulthinking
Also McDonalds is profitable in Sweden where they pay $30 per hour and have to give 1 year fully paid parental leave . . .still profitable!!!

@strongbad2016
Massive profit is useless in a high inflation economy. That's like saying i got a massive wage raise but a cup of coffee is 10 bucks and a McDonald's meal is 17 bucks. So a company gets high profits but if the cost of everything is high, their purchasing power is pretty much the same as prior to inflation

@stevepackard8542
Corp profits have nothing to do with this. Most franchise owners are mom and pop

@joe91687
Franchised food chains still need to make a profit to keep it's doors open and pay it's employees. 15 dollars per hr for unskilled labor equals higher product prices. It's not that hard. Corporate profit has nothing to do with individual franchise owners tying to keep their doors open

@briansguy
yeah $20 to put cold fries in a bag (with no napkins or ketchup) , and higher materials cost has nothing to do with it. McDonald's stock recently tanked! nobody's getting rich owning or operating McDonald's right now...

@vietnam1978
Where I live you can get a meal at McDonald’s for $3-4.

@PribsPinballRepair
The only credit I’ll give CNBC is that they forgot to turn the comments off, and I’m glad that it seems that everyone understands it’s corporate greed and price-gouging which is why we’re at this current point.

@timsmith2525
There is no such thing as price-gouging. No one is forcing anyone to eat at McDonald's.

@paperip1996
"It's definitely due to labor costs"
My bro I live in Nebraska. Fast food places here have been paying 11-13/hour since 2014, every place is understaffed, and prices are STILL rising just as fast as in places like California and Seattle

@silvy7394
I work as GM at one of these places. Cost's about 40 cents to make a taco. They sell it for $1.40.
Over the last year they raised prices 40%. They only raised wages by 4%. Food cost's did not raise anywhere near 36%. Where's all that extra cash going? Profits. In fact the owners are so stressed for cash that they bought 2 new stores the last year.
This all ignores the fact our food quality has gone down drastically over the last 4 years to cheaper options, but they keep raising the prices. Edit: I also forgot to mention that we staff less people now and are required to put less of the daily sales to labor, and they never fix, or sometimes replace, equipment in the store anymore. They have the money, they just dont want to spend it unless absolutely necessary.

@lastime77
The 4 piece nugget from Burger King was 3.99. I was like, no thanks. I paid about 3.00 for a child size fries. It's 25.00+ per meal now.

It's incredible how restaurants and fast food joints in Europe can pay government regulated wages just fine and keep normal prices without blaming the workers or extorting the customer with "tips", isn't it funny?

@lmargo3501
McDonalds has to pay their workers $20 an hour to start in California. You think there will still be a $1 menu? All the food prices are up for companies, just like they are up for you.

Yeah., this video feels a LOT like blaming consumers and employees rather than examining things like "Why are prices going up so much when costs aren't going up so much and profits and dividends keep rising much faster?"

@lyndonflynn-roach9457
The other factor is that fast food is highly addictive. People who routinely ate and grew up on fast food as a part of their diet won't suddenly stop buying it just because it has become more expensive.

@jhmyersii
Love how these companies cite labor costs as the primary cause of inflation, when the truth is that greed is the true cause. We are suffering under a massive wave of "Greedflation".

@Nathan-ff3it
That is a real thing in California, though. We just had minimum wages specifically for fast food raised to 20 dollars an hour. This place is run by people who do not understand economics.

@mohawkman6
Blame the labor for increase in prices but they never talk about how much the CEO's make in their salaries or the tax cuts that these businesses get. The fast food employee is trying to survive, the company is trying to make huge profits and blame others

@FriedCheeseCrepe
To be fair if you cut CEO pay that does virtually nothing concerning costs. Also, most fast food chains are franchises and are considered owned by small business owners. They don’t make a whole lot, considering the overhead costs.

@tarantinoish
The reasons the prices are so high is that CEOs refuse to take pay cuts. Then they hear that the cost of ingredients is up five percent and they say, “that’s a great reason to raise the price by fifteen percent and make even more profit. Anyone asks why prices went up and we can say inflation. Don’t blame us, it’s inflations fault. We’ll be on yachts where you can’t reach us if you need us. Bye, bye now.”

I stop earing at fast food restaurants not because of the price but the quality. Workers spend more time on their phone rather than doing their jobs.

@villesanti1
A few days ago, I went to Subway and got a 6-inch sandwich, bag of chips, and a medium soda for 15+ dollars, and they even asked for a tip at the register. Never again. I can make my own sandwiches for far less and better. People need to boycott fast food because not only you'll save money, but you'll also eat healthier. And if restaurants can't pay their employees a decent wage, they shouldn't be in business.

@nukeracer3906
You can’t even call it “Fast” food anymore. Wait twenty minutes to be served stale, cold garbage, or go to a sit down restaurant and get a hot, fresh meal for similar pricing, it’s brought to you with a smile. I hope every fast food joint goes belly up.

@ty-le5lv
I worked in fast food, 3 workers can make literally $10k of food an hour. I never understand where the profit margins went, but then i found out how much the owners make. It's modern day slavery, if they try to blame the rising costs on employees that's a lie.

That is not totally true. Most fast food restaurants are placing machines in place of people. So, that shows the price hikes aren't about employment. It's about greed.

I rarely eat fast food anymore…Mcdonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, etc. Prices are way out of hand for disgusting garbage food. I decided that I was not going to over-pay for disgusting food anymore. The only exception is In & Out Burger. If I lived in California, I would eat In & Out a lot.

@Just_Johnnie
Corporates greed is the main reason for the fast food prices increase. The labor cost is only a part of the total cost of a burger. There is no reason why the labor cost is the main driver for the price increases.

Don't understand why people are so shocked about all of this. The writing was on the wall when Congress decided to raise the minimum wage up. When that goes up, the restaurants are going to raise their prices up to make up for the loss.

Fast Food is supposed to have two main purposes: quick and cheap. It's no longer cheap anymore, and if you take about 30 minutes to cook at home, people will have very little need to ever go to a McDonalds, Burger King, etc. These companies better find a way to get those prices down or they honestly might start going out of business

Wages go up and so does the price of everything. Personally I don't need the experts to explain this to me.....
I realize that atleast half of our society doesn't understand this concept.

I stopped at Mcdonalds to get breakfast for me and my mom before a road trip.Hadn't ate there in a couple years... 2 bacon egg and cheese, 2 hash browns was almost 16 dollars. they are out of their damn minds!
