What do British people think about India and Indian people?

I have travelled through India for several months a few years ago. My observations:
The good:
Amazing nature. Himalayas are spectacular and one of the most (maybe the most) beautiful place in the world. Rajasthan (amazing deserts) Assam, Kerala are also stunning etc.
Outstanding temples and palaces.
Indians have a unique culture and are mostly warm friendly people who are keen to meet with westerners and discuss all manner of things (often intellectual).
The 1000s of places to practice yoga and take part in spiritual conversations.
Indian music. I loved listening to all the songs while I was travelling around India. I have a great memory of being on a jeep listening to this mesmerising Indian music while looking at the Himalayas (I think it was a Bhajan). I liked it everywhere.
The food! All the varied Indian street food. The curries. The deserts.
The spirituality of the place. There is something in the air. Amazing experiences staying at an ashram. Amazing spiritual people.
The exciting hustle and bustle of being in an Indian city. Cows and other animals walking around the city centres.

The bad:
10. Indians tend to be very nationalistic and it can make discussing/critiquing India problematic. I held my tongue often when discussing often with Indians when I saw the passion they had for their country. This could be seen as a good point too (depending on your perspective).
11. Street harassment will happen to you everywhere in India for westerners. People will come up to you everywhere - good people, insistent shop keepers, scammers, beggers. And a lot of westerners become rude because of this treatment.
12. The scale of people and poverty is on another level. A not uncommon sight is beggers near death, with limbs missing asking for money. Brazil favelas seem middle class in comparison to poverty in India. And people are just everywhere. Of course, there is a lot of middle class and super rich too.
13. A surprising absence of women. They are not very noticeable and seemed to be less of them around the city (are they stuck in offices/homes?). For example, I was never served food once by an Indian woman in all the time I was there. It seemed that men did practically all customer service jobs.

14. Indian people stare at you. In restaurants, on trains, in temples, everywhere you go Indians are staring at you. This goes for double if you are a woman. And they often don't look away if you look at them. It can be annoying. Many single female travellers go to India, but as in most countries they have to be careful, at night in particular.
15. Deli belly. India has a lot of germs and some bad hygiene practices and a lot of westerners get sick visiting India.
16. Guru scammers. They are a lot of dodgy gurus that have set up spiritual groups to scam money out of vulnerable westerners who are looking for answers to their lives.
17. The chaotic infrastructure. However India is doing some impressive things recently (e.g. solar technology).
Note: In general I think India is an amazing country, and well worth visiting. But like every country it has flaws.

How do British people feel about India now after 67 years of Independence from the colonial rule of Britain?
Well India is a pretty big place.
It's always been viewed as a friendly country and a rather complicated democracy.
It has largely been one of the more successful parts of the commonwealth and somewhere that has tea and cricket.
Everyone points to bad episodes in British history everywhere in the world. I think after 67 years it's time to look forward.
India has had plenty of time to sort its problems out and there comes a time when blaming the British for everything gets a little old.

Dwelling on attrocities is something politicians like to do. It isn't the whole story and times change. Let's say anything over 120 years ago is more than 3 generations. No one has a lix to that is alive.
Politicians normally point to the past when they have nothing to say about the future. For example it is easier to talk about Amritsar in 1919 and blame the British, than Amritsar 1984, which was entirely Indian.
India is a pretty large and diverse country and pretty tolerant. Most Indians I know are second generation immigrants, with a strong sense of family, a work ethic, possibly a little business/money orientated, but largely easy going.
India still has problems involving caste and status and the government is still corrupt. It still functions though.
Everyone in India is a politician and knows how to run the country, sadly its a billion different answers.

It has come close to sliding into dictatorship with the state of emergency way back in the 70's
I'm worried about the BJP and communal violence, but I'm not a fan of Congress either which is largely a swindling machine.
Football hasn't really taken off in India and people still support Man Utd.
I think its one of the most promising countries, it has problems, but a lot of the world is much worse.

I am Scottish and have been to India many times. My first visit was as a young newly married man in 1984, and my last was a couple of years ago.
I have travelled through many parts, but mainly in the South.
It really started when I worked with a load of Indian guys in the 1980s and they gave us our first itinerary based around Bangalore. They were so pleased we were desperate to see it as they came from around that area. This was of course when Bangalore was still viewed as a “Garden” city not the sprawling metropolis it is now. I was and am hooked.
At the time comparatively few British went to India. Those who did tended to go to the more popular tourist destinations further North. This was before Goa and such like became popular cheap package places.
My new wife and I used the trains buses, and of course motorbikes/rickshaws and met overwhelmingly fab people. (She is a Yoga teacher so has been fascinated by the whole country and culture since time immemorial. ) We have always tried to avoid the tourist traps and have tried hard to meet ordinary Indian people. We were not and are not “hippies”. We have always had enough money to do as we wished (within reason), so I believe we have contributed rather than tried to view India as just a cheap holiday destination.
We have always avoided the obvious “Western Hotels” and have never booked from the UK but always when we arrive. That has been both an experience and a trial.
The people we met were overwhelmingly brilliant. That has been the case in all of our journeys.

When my son was 16 we took him and his female cousin touring by train round the south. He absolutely adored it and now is very keen to tour around with his new wife. I should add we have always done this independently and run away from the organised tour approach.
We LOVE the food. Of course we know Indian food in the UK is a hybrid and mainly run by Bangladeshi people. Why wouldn’t we?
There were obvious things that struck me and my family about India as a country.
The natural beauty, scenery, the aromas (in both a good and a bad way), the colours and the crowds in the cities.
The varieties of the food. We love the different flavours in the different areas. Also the sheer complexity of the country. It is after all a continent. The different languages, culture and religions. Huge.

What are the bad things?
Well here goes-the thing that struck me most on my first visit is how badly very poor people were treated by some Indian people. To me it was like they were viewed as beneath consideration almost like slaves. That was upsetting.
Also the attitude by some to women to western eyes is shocking. My niece was subjected to some pretty sexist approaches. She is a young attractive woman and that was troubling. Please understand, this is not a reflection on Indian people, just on some ignorant jerks. It was very noticeable and we are extensive travellers.
So our experiences of harassment of young women seem to be still going on.
I would love to think we have just been unlucky as there are creeps everywhere.

The other thing is how much litter and waste is allowed to gather on the streets. That has got immeasurably worse since we started visiting all those years ago. Particularly plastics. The last time we saw a lot of fires burning plastics. Wow. That really is not good.
I also have to mention the petty corruption we were subjected to. In my view if anything is holding back India, it is this, as clearly it seems to go to the highest levels. There is corruption everywhere of course ,but it is very noticeable .
As I have said the people were brilliant. So will I go back?
Too right can’t wait. Love the whole thing. However, lumping all people in as one is of course dangerous. Just as all “British” is very difficult to summarise so is all “Indian”.

As an aside ( I do love that expression), I know Indian people or people of Indian descent in the UK, and while generalisations are dangerous, overwhelmingly they are viewed by me and everyone I know as hard working, ambitious and really keen to get on. Striving hard to be educated.
You couldn’t ask for more.

EDIT -I really hate to have to write this but on our recent trip to Cuba last month and since writing the article, we met a charming young German girl travelling on her own. She had been just about everywhere. Asia,North and South America, Japan Korea Indonesia as well as Australia and New Zealand.
She was advising another older Dutch woman who really wanted to visit India as a lone traveller. My wife and I of course as always, encourage people to visit. India has so much to offer. As I have said above we love the place.
Sadly, the only place on her multiple travels she didn’t feel safe was in India. She wouldn’t go on her own again. She strongly advised going with a male partner. That was on a recent trip. She had been very uncomfortable on a number of occasions and had been touched “inappropriately” . Her words not mine.

Poornamsh U Buch ( પૂર્ણાંશ)
It's extremly abominable that women are ill-treated in the land of saints. Awake Indians! This doesn't go well on you. If you think that you are imitating Westerners than remember that they only complain about this. Also all other countries are being considered safer in case of women's safety. Land of India is well known for its Divine values and culture and if you will continue to carry on this behaviour than you will ruin your image on world map.Resurrect your moral values…
Thank you sir for addressing the issue.
