One of Japan's most well-known bread brands is recalling thousands of packets and offering refunds after the remains of a rat was found in its products.

Around 104,000 packs of sliced white bread made by the Pasco Shikishima Corporation have been pulled from shelves. Parts of the black rat had been discovered in at least two packets.

Pasco bread is a staple in many Japanese households and a ubiquitous presence in supermarkets and convenience stores across the country.

There have been no reports thus far of anyone falling sick as a result, Pasco said in a statement earlier this week.

"We deeply apologise for the inconvenience caused to our customers, business partners, and all concerned parties," it said.

The bread was produced at a factory in Tokyo, whose assembly line has been suspended.

Pasco did not say how the rat's remains ended up in its products, but it pledged to "do our utmost to strengthen our quality controls so that this will never happen again".

The company has since published a form on its website for affected customers to apply for refunds online.

Its products are also exported to the US, China, Australia, and Singapore, among other countries.

Food recalls are rare in Japan, a country with famously high standards of sanitation.

However there have been several health scares involving food recently.

Earlier this month, hundreds of students in the north-eastern Miyagi prefecture fell sick after drinking milk supplied to their schools.

In March, drugmaker Kobayashi Pharmaceutical issued a voluntary recall of dietary supplements meant to lower cholesterol. The firm said last month it is probing five deaths potentially lixed to the products, which contain red yeast rice.

Last year, the convenience store chain 7-Eleven apologised and announced recalls after a cockroach was found in a rice ball.

If this were to happen in India, the company would have denied the entire thing and said that is impossible to happen as their factory is on the moon.

Because this happened in Japan, expect to see nonstop spin on how "clean" the Japanese supposedly are, and how their roach-infested, rat-swarming alleys are superior to other alleys

@riardomilos8014
nah, Japan is undoubtedly cleaner than most countries including the more advanced ones.. the only abnormalities happening are people who think Japan is land of squeaky-clean plate where there’s no fault and is a perfect country.

come on. what a discovery but, this accident in JAPAN just 1 out of millions.

@TheTranceCartel
And yet China is a nation of 1.2 billion, with millions of food enterprises, yet if this happened in China we'd all be watching specials on NBC and CBS about food safety in China as if it was relevant to American lives beyond mere propaganda purposes

@shanMaoMao4156
Yeah China is large, so more incidents happen. People don't have the IQ to understand this though.

@brexitgreens
Here's another example of the IQ of normal people: the popular saying "you get what you pay for". How it works out in reality: this Japanese rat bread is apparently a premium brand. But being normal (thinking like everybody else) is the psychiatrists' idea of being mentally healthy.

What happened to Japan? Are they regressed back to became developing country or something?

@brexitgreens
The 1980s ended. Crises test the true value of the nation's principles; prosperity only masks it. To be fair to Japan, they suffered a catastrophic tsunami many years ago which sunk their economy and they have never recovered from a crippling national debt since.

It’s funny how much of a dystopia this comment section is,
If this happen in China, everyone would massively criticize China.
If this happen in Japan, small portion would criticize, large percentage would make a positive joke.

@T4Bfan444
Really gross and sad. Japan's turning into 2020's America with Buddhist Temples and anime to mask its soxiety's downfall. Even South Korea looks better and much more developed than Japan now. "Flavorless Candy" is trending in Japan, whike you can buy fresh watermelon all year long in "backwards" South Korea.

@alexander1989x
Japan really lost its way. Once held at high standards, but now greed and corruption seeps in.

@zenaku4
Dude, Japan today is not Japan back in 80s or 90s,.me and alot of my friend alway thinking that Japanese society kind of stuck in early 2000s., right now SK already looks more modern than them tbh,.meanwhile Japan still like that, never changing. The spirit of innovation that used to be core spirit of Japan, they are gone..

i felt Japan became more and more ethnocentric by days and their products getting worse and worse. This case just one of them, but i remember Honda case in Indonesia, or how a company like Toshiba fall into falsifying their financial reports, or Sony smartphone became non existent player in the market,.list is on and on,.there are something really wrong in Japan tbh..

The fact that they recalled every single package and offered compensation is amazing. If this happened in my country, people would get at most an apology.

@classeontop7403
They legally needs to do it. It's a worldwide thing, If you're product has something on it then they legally needs to recall all of it or else they'd be facing lawsuits and you know how it is in lawsuits, it's more expensive than just recalling all of it.

@akashgiri4377
and people are still angry and making fun of Japan, they don't know that they made the right decision before anyone got diseased. Also most of the countries won't even give refunds or take packages back in this scenario, they would have just blamed each other until the company gets shut down

Imagine you find the rat parts when you're almost finishing the whole bread.

@Aeybiseediy
The fact that its rat 'parts' and not the whole rat brings the fear to a whole another level

If that would happen in India , people would be criticizing all over the world and Indians too.

@V_for_Victory_for_V
The fact that they didnt conceal this and had to recall a lot of those bread more than they should, speaks a lot about Japanese culture. If this happened in other countries, I bet, no recall would have to be done. And that they would probably only compensate the person who reported the incident.

@kister2012
It's accident but Japan put it in a Big News to protect the Consumer as will and pull out all the breads in the market it is a big loss for the Company but for the consumer health security protection reason they sacrifice their losses. Good job.

@user-qr9qj8wd2f
I respect this company sincerely. It handled this intimidating situation with such professionalism, offering refunds and recalling batches. This can happen to any business, they got unlucky. Naturally and understandably, as consumers we will be turned off and disgusted, perhaps not wanting to buy from this company, but it happens to other companies too.
