The bedrock of America has always been its middle class, and it’s under attack and is eroding.
Healthcare is the worst in the developed world. This drives people into bankruptcy and affects ability to spend on goods and services.
The quality of public education is in serious decline relative to the rest of the developed world. Curriculum, infrastructure, and teachers. Priorities are badly screwed up. Sports facilities get funding and budgets for quality teachers don’t.

Internal and external events could cause the US to decline faster, or bounce back. History is always being written, and patriotism is a person choice for each citizen. From Trumps election, and republican acceptance of him, I get a sense that many people think politics is a joke. That is not a good sign.

It's division of powers, Bill of Rights, and citizen representation in most leadership positions is designed to prevent too much power from being centralized. The specific division of powers between the legislative, executive and judicial branches effectively prevents the country from “ imploding” as you put it. Wether or not American leaders are elected or appointed, they all swear an oath to protect and defend the Constitution. It would take a large scale coordinated plan by traitors in positions of power acting in concert against their sworn allegiance to America, to collapse the system. They wouldn't fare too well with penalties for acts of espionage, sedition and war against the United States which range from lengthy prison sentences to even the death penalty.
