Black Myth: Wukong has already reached the #2 spot in terms of all time peak player count, not current or even daily peak player count (it already reached #1 in both those metrics mere hours after launch). The only game to have a higher peak CCU in steam's 20 year history was PUBG at its absolute peak.

It remains to be seen whether Black Myth: Wukong will solidify its place in history by taking the #1 spot. Regardless of whether that happens, this game is already a massive success on steam.

When this game was announced it looked like one of those fake games that was just a pre-rendered video, too good to be real, and would fade away and never come out like all the other fake graphical showpiece games you see over the years. Except it actually did come out! and it's exactly the game people were hyped for. They deserve the success.

@MadnessBunny
I thought the exact same and dismissed the game completely up until launch, I was sure we were gonna get a cyberpunk in last gen consoles situation or something. Boy was I wrong lMao. Congrats to the devs, the game looks awesome.

@CosmicConjuror2
Reminds me Ghost of Tsushima. When it was first revealed I thought the game was going to be more cinematic rather than gameplay oriented. Too good to be true. Once the reviews came out I was shocked to hear that it was Assassin’s Creed with top of the line graphics. Glad to hear it’s the same for this game too.

@Izzy248
And its crazy because when that originally happened, it was only like 1 or 2 people, and they used the video as a recruitment tool to get other people to join their studio and help them make the game. Then it only took 4 years for us to get this. Its kinda wild. I have to agree too, because far too much do games show up that seem almost too good to be true, and they either never happen, or they dont live up to the hype, like with Atomic Heart.

@SacredGray
People were far too harsh and skeptical toward this game for a while after it first was revealed. I'm glad this game disproved those people.

@Professional_Goat185
I hope that will spike interest in single player in Chinese publishers, by the very nature of main audience they have pretty big budgets.

@Radulno
From the first reveal that game showed gameplay and seemed far less fake than most AAA game when they're revealed. The only doubtful thing was that it was an unknown studio but the game being real was never in doubt. Not counting that making a fake game would be some weird scam anyway as you don't sell anything

@ihave0idea0
YEP, I was telling people it was a scam and not real lol. Respect to the devs.

@Spader623
What's extra wild to me is that apparently it runs pretty decently (30 FPS fairly locked on low) on steam deck. Like there's so many games that look much worse than this that run much worse too

@loliconest
Yet you keep getting people saying the devs are lazy with the optimization

@AwayActuary6491
People are just kinda dumb with their setups too and will pump a game up to Ultra settings then complain about performance

@je-s-ter
People with budget GPUs playing on 1440p/4k and complaining about performance is a tale as old as time.

@ilikesnortingcum
I filtered the reviews by language and as far as I can tell, out of like 140k+ (so far) only about 4.5k of them are in English, with the rest being overwhelmingly Asian languages (Chinese I guess.

@don_ninniku
there's more. I have steam show only the reviews in "other languages", and behold, the "playtime at the time the review is submitted" are always less than half an hour.

@Greggsnbacon23
I'm gonna give it a month to get the genuine reception. Right now, somethings definitely getting manipulated.

@FrawBoeffaDeezNutz
Noticed this too. But then what they have bots buying the game legitimately and just leaving reviews. Who has that kind of money to do thst to artificially pump up the review numbers. Except maybe the Chinese govt itself. But even then now your talking like wild conspiracy shit lol.

@nerfgazara
Devs can generate as many keys as they want for free, but for what it's worth I'd bet on it just being overzealous fans.

@CombatMuffin
It's a veritable AAA (in all the Western meaning of that word) Chinese developed game. The game seems to be good (even great) by most accounts, it has Western appeal, especially because of the graphics, and absolute popularity in China. If anyone ever wondered why Western publishers keep trying to appease the Chinese market, this is it.

@nemuri_no_kogoro
Does it have Western appeal? Of the 160,000 reviews, only 4000 are in English.

@kevin41714
The game's not even been out for a full day. The current reviews are basically useless besides from an initial impression or performance perspective. The initial deluge of Chinese reviews are Chinese netizens hyped about an AAA Chinese title based on a classic tale, meaning the 96% review rate is kind of useless but so is the ratio of western/Chinese reviews. More NA reviews are likely coming once they actually get some playtime in and can form qualitative impressions.

@Splinterman11
This. The sales numbers are undoubtedly huge. But I want to see numbers from outside China.

@radwimps
Why does that matter though?

@Splinterman11
Why not? China has a different player base. What appeals to them doesn't necessarily appeal outside.

@radwimps
This isn’t a new genre though, and has a decent appeal in western or euro players. It’ll probably do better than something like Nioh did given the high visibility and attention. Just kinda sounds like people only think games are successful by a certain metric only.

@Scaevus
I mean if we assume 90% of players are Chinese, then we have what, ~220,000 concurrent non-Chinese players for a single player game? That is more than twice as many as Witcher 3, which peaked at 100,000 concurrent players, and comparable to something like Stardew Valley or Path of Exile. Team Fortress 2 only ever hit 250,000 concurrent players. I feel like yeah, that means it’s pretty appealing to Western audiences too.

@Calm-Day-2515
I’ve been thinking the same thing. Redditors for some weird reason keep pointing out that there’s “only” 5k English reviews, like that’s not insane for the game being out for a day

@disagreeable_martin
Well, looking at the trailers, I can't see a single reason why this wouldn't have western appeal. It looks like a great game that should comfortably hit over a million sales, I'd be shocked otherwise.

@Scaevus
It sold more than that in preorders. They hit 4.5 million earlier today.

@Professional_Goat185
Not the "western appeal" myth again... There is no such thing. If the game is good and is properly translated, people will play it with zero "catering to the west", that happened time and time again. People are just fine with discovering new, unknown to them culture as they are with new fantasy/sci-fi universe.

@MM487
Does it? The IGN review said you need to know the story of Journey to the West or you won't know what's going on.

@Smessu
Yeah I am wondering how much impact it will have on future AAA devs... Guidelines for Chinese market are pretty strict, will we see more editors following them to reach itt?

@DrNick1221
I mean, is anyone surprised the game had massive numbers? It's a game based on probably one of the most popular Chinese folk lore figures, and from what I can see went on a pretty damn big advertising campaign in China.

@TheSecondEikonOfFire
I think most people (myself included) just vastly underestimated how much potential the Chinese market has. Like you always hear that their market is huge, but seeing it firsthand like this really puts it into perspective

@radbee
The Chinese market is gargantuan, but only if you're able to tap into it. And other than a couple anomalies, only Chinese companies can tap into it. For reference, Hollywood tried for a while before realizing it was a waste of time. Only Endgame broke into the top 20 highest grossing movies in China, at 8th.

@cleaninfresno
God i definitely don’t miss that point in time where every single big blockbuster movie was bending over backwards to try and pander to Chinese audiences and I say that as someone who’s half Chinese. Like that Great Wall movie with Matt Damon, wtf was that?

@QubitQuanta
I thought Great Wall was a Chinese studio trying (and failing) to pander to the Western market. They don't need Matt Damon to pander to the Chinese market.

@NoNefariousness2144
Yeah you just have to look at the monthly revenue of Genshin or something to see how ridiculously huge the spending power of Chinese players is. Hopefully Black Myth’s mega success inspires devs to try out more standalone games.

@Murmido
These last two years have been pretty good for AAA developers in Asia. Solid Korean single player games and now this one from China being extremely successful. Its nice to play games from these countries that aren’t MMO’s or Gacha. Its been mostly just the U.S. and Japan leading AAA development and its exciting to see that possibly change significantly in the next decade.

@tatooine0

@Shiirooo
Ubisoft has 2 big studios in China.

@Medium_Small_ManJR
Yeah, but Ubisoft only releases tripe

@WhoAmIEven2
Currently a lot of sales are Chinese. Like a lot a lot, but I am curious if this game is going to have a great tail n the west as well when people figure out that the game is actually fantastic. Long time since I've had this much fun. Just focus, unadulterated action with few breaks inbetween with a fantastic combat system to that.

@LawUntoMyBooty
Chinese gamers are usually pretty harsh critics. If it's done so overwhelmingly well so far, the West will lap it up.

@GroundbreakingBag164
Chinese gamers aren’t harsh critics at all, especially with international games they are a bit proud of considering that their culture very rarely reaches western markets

@PoohTheWhinnie
This only further demonstrates how large the Chinese market alone is. Wukong is one of, if not their most beloved fictional characters. This was destined to happen if the game was at least decent.

@Tall_Process_3138
I'm happy this game came out because it pretty shows countless Chinese mythical creatures which are really underrated (most people just know about dragons) also the bestiary/journal giving stories for there origins is also great.

After the success of BMW, I think it's pretty safe to say we should be expecting a lot more AAA games being developed in the Chinese market.

@CheesecakeMilitia
Really cool to see a well-made single player game dominating in China, a market typically associated with multiplayer gacha games over here in the West. I bet we'll see more western games tailoring themselves to the Chinese market like the movie industry does after this overwhelming success.
