It is outdated. Our education system needs reforms. We can generate good employees but we cannot generate those who generate jobs. The education provided in IIM’s and IIT's are far excellent and we need that same system for schools. Creativity dies in school. Very few schools favour creativity. Teachers are also orthodox , they encourage students only for getting high marks not for to being creative.

Indian education system, especially professional education, is probably among the worst and most flawed in the world. The over-emphasis on theory is simply ridiculous. Premier institutes like IITs and IIMs may be exceptions, but not by a large stretch.
To score good grades in India, an excellent memory is much more useful than good skills or talent. Someone with really good memory but mediocre skills, can easily get very good grades by memorizing the textbook and reproducing it in his exams. On the other hand, someone having good skills but poor memory almost always ends up with average or poor grades.

The worst part is, the companies over here use academic record (which is an indication of of the candidate's memory much more than skills) while hiring candidates. So even if a person is highly skilled, it is almost impossible for him to give a flying start to his career if he doesn't have a good academic record. I have come across so many people who get into top companies based on their excellent academic record, but struggle with their jobs because of poor practical knowledge.

I can think of an analogy here, which sums up the abysmal Indian education system. Suppose a person is asked to take a theory examination on driving a car. He has very good memory, and so he studies a book for this and clears the exam with a top grade. But if he is actually asked to drive a car, he is likely to crash it. In spite of this, employers would prefer this guy over someone who has failed this theory exam on car driving, although he is an expert in actually driving a car.
Don't even get me started on the atrocious caste-based reservation, which allows lazy bums who can't get their heads out of their butts to actually compete with others in a fair way, and use their 'caste' as an excuse to get all the benefits easily.

I definitely would NEVER recommend anyone to study in India beyond 12th grade (except maybe in premier institutions), provided he/she has sufficient financial resources to study abroad. If not, then self educating oneself would still be much better than attending a a higher education course in India. If a degree is still needed on paper, it can very easily be 'purchased' through dubious means. After all, with the rampant corruption in the country, buying a degree is no big deal here.

The curriculum do not train us to have a personality of our own. They do not make us confident, fearless, better in communication and hardly fulfill our needs for skills which are required of us to ‘make a mark in this world’.
Rote learning still plagues our system, students study only to score marks in exams, and sometimes to crack exams like IIT JEE, AIIMS or CLAT.
Millions of students are victim of an unrealistic, pointless, mindless rat race.

Teachers are passouts who are just not passionate about what they do(in some universities)
Teachers feel a kind of pride by humiliating students and demotivating them(personal experience)
To be a good student you need to study hard is old concept,but you need to attain college regularly, follow the time wasting procedures, wait for teachers to come and to listen to their broken English (not all are same btw)

From childhood we are taught to learn(or rather memorize) what's in the books.We become like frog in the well.We make the book our God and dedicate our mind, eyes and health to the worship of facts it provides.Our mind doesn't get the training to look beyond the shore.

More Rote-learning, less creative learning- the race for good grades and marks and cramming before exams is quite rampant in today's school and college going children.Who cares to think out of the box? Being innovative doesn't fetch marks so why bother?

What are the best things about Indian education system?
From my experience,
Indian education is very cheap. You can complete your education for some paltry amount in a Government-run or Government-aided school. Again in higher education, most government institutions are way cheaper compared to institutions in other countries.
Indian education system has very little interference from religious fundamentalists. Compared to resistance that topics like Evolution faces in the US, Indian education system is relatively free and relies only on science for its curriculum. There are occasional incidents of incorporating non-sense in the syllabus (like Veg. people are better than non-Veg people). But, it is mostly fine.
印度教育体系有哪些值得称道的地方?根据我的亲身体验:
印度的教育费用非常低廉。在政府运营或政府资助的学校,你可以以相对较少的费用完成学业。在高等教育层面,大多数政府机构的学费也远低于其他国家的教育机构。

Bullying was minimum in schools that I went to. College introduces everyone to bullying in the name of "ragging". But, everything is quiet manageable.
For the most part, history is taught just as it is understood to have happened. Though only North Indian empires and kingdoms are covered in great detail compared to empires in other regions, it does not alter certain portion of the history to fit certain political goals (something that is done in a few other countries).
One other answer mentions that Maths is given importance. I agree with that. This is both good as well as a bad point - many engineers vs Math stealing talented students from other subjects.
