I visited Europe last year. The trip started with France, and so did my fascination.
That was the first time I actually realised what a “Developed nation” looked like. It was unsettling, to be frank. It felt as if I'd come to another World, or into hundreds of years in future.
The first thing you observe is the blue skies. Since there's a ban on signboards and ad screens, and there are just a few skyscrapers, the view of sky is unhindered. And it's beautiful. I tell you, as Indians, we have forgotten how deep blue sky used to like. It's mesmerising.

Then the roads. I have gone through main roads and alleyways, in cities and in outskirts, and everywhere I have found fantastic roads, with well covered drainage. The lack of sound is palpable, because sounding the Horn is not allowed. So there's no pollutuon or noise, and you can have a peaceful cup of coffee, just at the roadside, in one of the numerous cafés.

Add to that their wondeful free healthcare system, ease of transportation, controlled population that doesn't suffocate you when you're on the road. Then further add the citizens and their amazing civic sense- you will never see anyone cutting the line or overtaking another vehicle; their manners and attitude- people love their lives and their jobs; their food habits- they don't live to eat, they eat to live; their logical and non-judgemental society- you will NEVER ever hear parents killing their children for marrying someone, there's no caste system, little girls aren't murdered there; and you'll understand why, in a couple of days, I was highly depressed about living in India. This looked so unfair; I had done everything right in my life, why couldn't I have the lifestyle these people have?

But then I realised something. Even if I moved there, I won't be one of them. I'd always be an outsider. And that's never the same. So, yeah, all said and done, I will stay in India and try hard to make my country better. But also, I will regret that I wasn't born in one of the more developed countries.

Kilenjar Nagaraja
No point regretting that you were not born in one of the developed countries .
I am absolutely content and happy that I was born in India into a stable family with access to education and spirituality ( I know it is schadenfreude) . What if I was born into a dysfunctional family (addict parents/divorced) in one of those countries? How would that be good?

Or if you were born in Somalia? I understand what you say, but the answer above is honest.

I can feel this . Even I feel going to developed country to live a beautiful life as the OP describes will be so fulfilling still the happiness would be incomplete. It would feel like an absconder . And of course we can never feel at home if we are born and brought up in our own country! While people native to that country have no such issues to feel guilty about . They can just enjoy it as it is

Dae
how can u make this country better? the population is intrested in muslim vs hindu fights than development. most vote for modi not because he has bough astronomical development in ease of buisness . what can we expect from them

exactly, i’m literally crying how delulu these people can be, how they can just ignore how parents kill their own. children, girls and women are raped and killed, wives beaten and still no one, even though knowing everything, helps them because abuse is our culture. it is. my heart is shattered because there's no helping these kind of people, i have no human rights here.

Ibrahim Warsi
exactly,

确实

how will one make this country better if they have abusive parents at home, nobody cares, dirty water in taps, lowest, probably toxic quality of food, no resources to even start working towards a better life. it's become our culture, our religion. the people of this country just do not care. they're hyper religious, toxic, abusive, uncivilised, regressive.

you are right, parents and society, it is worse here.

If you are a woman, you will feel like an outsider all the time in India also.Like people will stare at you, be rude in public places anyways (Except for some places like Sikkim/ Goa/ affluent parts of the country) . What difference does it make? If you are a woman, you are a second class citizen by default ( by the way you are treated everywhere) Yes, India is place of joy, only if you are a boy.

Hey developed countries are good , but I have experience. Indian healthcare is world class , the natural beauty in india is the bestbbut you need to explore instead of wasting money going foreign.pls explore India first I'd say after visiting many developed countries it is one of the the best and shall not be underrated. Read the magnificent indian history and explore the rich heritage to broaden your view . These developed countries have exploited India to become developed. They have a lot of dark side to their development. There are tons of flaws in india but good thing is they are reducing .

Mayank Sharma
Indian healthcare is world class
You have one life you can live it exploring the “glorious past” and breathing polluted air , drinking polluted water, with garbage all around the city , not a single city with proper drainage system (Delhi , Mumbai , Bangalore everywhere drainage is a big issue) You can keep talking about how they looted us , yes they did but we kept looting ourselves since they left.
This “mera bharat mahan” is a smoke screen and a delusion. Well its not mahan ,let's accept the present situation and stop living in the past

John Radich
Chandigarh has good drainage. A city designed by a Frenchman!

yes but those who r born in developed nations are privileged one while we have to start from scratch….And in my possible lifespan hardly any changes will be observed

RAVINDRA CHAND
Yes, Nilesh but the change for a better, cleaner, civil India starts with me. I mean everyone of us individually. i.e. if I don’t litter then the roads/places around me will be cleaner, same goes for all other qualities the Europeans posses. I am doing my bit and hope one day in near future all my brethren will understand the meaning of civic sense and then we will definitely notice a change for a better India where drivers will not blast horns. we will not spit everywhere, will have a road and traffic sense, will not block the footpaths and be courteous to everyone. my navi Mumbai is already on it.

Li Hongyi
how? everybody wants a peaceful lifestyle, and they get it when they go abroad every day at least 5 Indians go abroad this is based on legal immigration numbers could go up if we count illegal ones.

I think you are getting over emotional my friend, world is a global thing now. You can stay wherever you want if you deserve it. There are laws in place to deal with discrimination and racism for a reason because we want to treat Earth as a home instead of boundaries.

How can you change and make better indian ?
Indians with egoistic mindset who don't habe civic sense this kind of people will make better india, hell no.
If you want to make india a better place and developed first indian need to change their mindset which is next to impossible because every tom, dick and harry are egoistics and never accept their wrong action or drawback.
There are some indian who want free food and house even if they enough resources rather than development in infrstructure and technology.

Honestly it is so disheartening to read all the comments. Everybody is so unhappy about India, only if you change your perception and look through the other lens. I have travelled to 9 countries.. europe as well so I get what you mean by the need to want to be born in a developed country. I love to travel and see the beautiful places but at the end of the day my heart is in India and I want to come back and live here because it's my home, I love the culture and belonging you find here you can't find it anywhere else. It's not India's fault that she was pushed into poverty by the British. Yeah you might say it happened 75 years ago.. that kind of trauma it takes time to get out of it. And it's citizens you and me need to take as much initiative as the government. It's very easy to comment about how the government isn't doing anything and at the same time polluting your country and not living like a civilised person.. people who actually civilised in other countries come back to India and act uncivilized. It's good you have a problem with the current state. How about you do something about it and also remember everything this country has given you too for a change.

you're absolutely right, this answer was written 6 years ago, I was pretty young and naive then. Now my mindset has shifted, yes, we do have problems, but we can look at the enormous legacy and history and culture of our country if we can look just beyond it. Thank you for the comment

Everyone Here are speaking bad about India, Guys I totally understand your feelings, I also feel such things sometimes, but I always divert my mind to practice Gratitude, because these thoughts can bring so many obstacles in your life! There's a saying, “if you want to achieve Big, Be grateful for what you've got”, Practicing Gratitude can change your life,if you feel grateful about your Life, you'll start gaining amazing things. Just be grateful and work hard, want to explore the world, take a job, or study in other countries, just don't sit here and cry for what you've got!
