On Sat 13th March approx. 6:10 pm my healthy, fit, 70 year old wife suffered a severe stroke. It took a few minutes for me to realise it. I dialled 999. The ambulance was there at 6:20. They had to call another so that two ambulance people were in the back with her. They prepped her and took her on the way to Southmead Hospital (10′ish miles away). The remaining driver helped me pack the necessary for her and then took me in.

They were not supposed to have visitors in hospital, but I was in shock and I think they were worried about me. I arrived at the hospital just before 7.00 pm. They told me to take a seat a moment. before I sat down they called my name and I was allowed into Margaret’s treatment room. She had already had a scan. They knew that she had suffered brain damage. They set about reducing her blood pressure and administering clot busters. At 8.00 pm they asked if I could arrange transport home. I could my children came to get me. The next morning we were told she had received two procedures, one to remove the clot from her brain, the other to remove a further clot from her leg. During this time she had had another scan. was on an acute ward and being treated by a brilliant team.

The follow up was brilliant. Initially I was getting calls from the consultant and doctors at least daily. After 10 days, They pronounced her fit and healthy. They only had to prevent further clots. This is done by blood thinning medication.
Sadly, Margaret has lost her mobility in her right hand side and her ability to speak. There have been teams of therapists working with her to stimulate her. These include: dietitians to balance the food intake to the calories required and in a form that she can use her left hand side; Fitness to ensure movement and teach to wash and dress herself; Mobility to work on the immobility. Speech; and a senior to act as liaison with me. We are allowed 30 minute video call every day. This is programmed to fit her schedule and the availability of family members.

She has nurses to assist in all her daily requirements. She has been referred to a local specialist Stroke Rehabilitation Centre and will be transferred when a room becomes available. She is likely to be there months if not years. Communication is twice daily.

We were now planning on bringing her home on 23rd July. Then things took a turn for the worse. Margaret contracted an infection. She then had an allergic reaction to the antibiotics. This made her room bound for 2–3 weeks with a lowering mood. She complained about a problem with her mouth/teeth/gums. She was taken to the Dental hospital for treatment and x-rays. The result was that the stroke had affected her jaw and was giving refereed pain to the moth and ear. Margaret has been refereed to an ENT consultant. (That might take a while). She started to improve but still down when 2 patients were tested positive for Covid. The hospital went into lock down. No visiting. Half the staff sent to isolate and the patients kept to their rooms. There was a skeleton staff.

Margaret came home on the 23rd as planned and then the bombshell was dropped. There was no care package in place. Margaret was next on the list. So they could take her back into hospital. It had been 4 and half months and she was home. We could not send here back so we lost any discharge care package and had to wait for the local community care to be put in place. We are managing OK. without it thanks to my daughter living in and taking 2 months unpaid leave. Our son comes around every day and does errands and takes us to the pictures. He has to see some films more than once. But he likes that.

We have had plenty of community support. the council have funded the build of access ramps, specialist nurses have been in to ensure our needs are met. We have a physio assigned. (she is great and is getting Margaret back using the quad stick). We are having a speech therapist assigned.

The only bill I have had to fund is the transferring the bathroom into a wet room. Age UK, a charity, arranged for it to be done at safeguarded rates and VAT free. This was outstanding. All the people involved knew the importance of the completion date so that Margaret could come home on time. The lead fitter worked weekends and 12 hour days working until 9 pm on the final day to ensure the job was complete. We included a bidet seat so Margaret is comfortable and independent in that area. They did a excellent job and I can’t thank them enough.

As you can see there are a multitude of people to thank. At the moment we have about 6 different people assigned to our welfare and on call. If we need additional assistance in the future it will be made available. There may be a wait list so get requests in early.

Not British myself, but in a country where we also have universal health care.
Like you, I don't begrudge a single cent of my taxes going towards other people's health care. I know that I too could be struck with something at any time, just like anyone else could and the last thing you need at such times is to have to worry if you can afford it, or if your health fund will cover it, or if you're being taken to a hospital that's in-network or will have to sell your house to pay for treatment.
And if I'm fortunate enough to never need those public services, then I consider myself lucky. I'm more than happy to pay my share to help those who are not.

Realize, Neil, there are people in America who see this as a new country, a new society where people work together to better their lives. They believe in democracy and better living through crowdsourcing. But also, a large proportion of American people came to this country solely to seek their own fortune. To rape and pillage the common resources and take advantage of the weak government for their own personal gain. Sadly these people pass along their pathology to their children. All they want is the maximum paycheck with the minimum of responsibility. They are not invested in America, they do not see themselves as a part of the greater society- they’re opportunists and gamblers and religious idealists and they were historically kicked out of every other decent country in the world!

It costs the average tax payer in the UK ￡720 -740 per annum to pay for our NHS. We do have prescxtion charges (i think you call them copays) of ￡9.80 per item in England. The rest of the UK is free. If you are on benefits over 60 or in full time education its free. If you have an illness that requires longterm medication its free.
Our dentists and opticians have a government issued scale of fees that they can charge.
I'm not sentimental but the NHS is marvelous. It doesn't get too much abuse.

My husband had a stroke almost 7 years ago — at the pub no less — and his slightly merry self insisted to everyone that he was fine until he tried to walk. Thankfully(?) they believe the alcohol (and of course the anticoagulants) helped prevent lasting damage. He still has a little weakness and some memory issues — but we both appreciate it could have been worse and he was lucky that not only had he had a few, but that the staff and patrons spotted the signs and phoned an ambulance before phoning me.

I will be forever grateful that the NHS eliminates the additional stress of “how can we afford this?” I grew up in the US, and it upsets me when I hear family members dealing with health concerns, even serious ones, thinking more about how much it will cost or will insurance cover it than “will I survive?”

Yes, the NHS is absolutely wonderful! I had a severe stroke in 2011 and was in horse pittle for 57 days. The help I had (and still am having) was outstanding. Before I was discharged, workmen were sent to my home to install extra handles in bathrooms, another handrail up the stairs, etc. They also delivered (free of charge of course) various walking aids (2 “zimmer" frxs - one for upstairs, one for downstairs and a 4 wheel rollator) and equipment such as an electric “hoist" for use in the bath. And when I came home a nurse came with me in the ambulance. She checked everything I needed and used in the home and how I managed the bathroom and stairs. Then she kissed me on the cheek and thanked me for being a “lovely patient”! Simply wonderful. How can you not love that service? The NHS is a “public service" - just like the Police force and the Fire service. They're simply the professionals who deal with particular problems - either health, law enforcement or fire. They're obviously paid from taxes. Simple and very efficient.
