I lived in America for a few years, and one day through lack of attention while making dinner, I cut into my hand and almost sliced off a finger. In the hospital I required numerous stitches, and my health insurance provider found a way not to pay. I ended up having to go out of pocket by nearly $12000 for a dozen stitches, a bandage, antibiotics and some anaesthetic. By contrast, almost twenty years of living in Britain cost me less than $1000 for medical treatments; I have to pay for prescxtions and nothing else. I cannot fathom how any sane human could believe the American system to be superior.

It's absolute insanity. That a cut finger can end up costing that much. The American healthcare system is one of Worst aspects of life in the states. Seriously, how they can charge that much for such a simple procedure?
I live in Sweden. You pay a base rate evrry time you see the doctor. No matter what your ailment, gross income, or social stature its always the same Price - for everyone.
They give citizens a medical card, to be stamped upon visiting a facility. After ten stamps, your visits are free until the card expires. Health insurance in the US is nothing more than a money racket.

It's an extortion racket.

The American Health System makes Al Capone look like a Decent citizen……..

That's interesting! . May I ask how much this base rate is? I would have imagined Sweden to have a totally free system, like Canada or like the nhs

The going rate is SEK 350 for a visit to your designated general practician or a specialist doctor, SEK 200 for physical therapy and SEK 100 for other services such as a session with a psychologist. When your yearly total has reached the cap of SEK 1100 (about US $135) any other appointments in that 12 month period is free. Same goes for medication, but the cap is SEK 2400 (I think), and as your total paid amount adds up, you pay successively less in steps (50%, 75%, 90% and finally 100% subsidised (again, I think)). There is also a fee for in-patient hospital care of SEK 80 per day (US $10) which is to cover your meals, TV, your internet access and so on. The rates may vary slightly between different parts of the country, but very little. That’s it. I never, ever pay more than the equivalent of about US $450 per year for any number of healthcare visits, any kind of medication and any kind of rehabilitation. Which is lucky for me, who due to some genetic and chronic issues need medication at a market value of around $10,000 per year. I couldn’t afford to live in the US. Not if I wanted to survive. Also, if for some reason I couldn’t afford to pay, you are always extended a credit and offered a payment plan. No one is ever turned away at the door or refused treatment of any kind, no matter how expensive to the state, because of lack of funds.

During my lifetime of 66 years, married for 43, raising two children, despite two births with problem pregnancies, multiple surgeries, some medium chronic conditions, we have never had a bill any where close to this. Even with a high deductible plan we never spent anywhere close to $12k in a year. I suppose if someone deliberately decided to not have any coverage it could happen, but if you want coverage it is easy to obtain either by getting a job, qualifying for Mddicaid (low to moderate income), Medicare (almost everyone over 65 gets this), or buying on the open market.
But if you decide to leave youself at risk by not figuring out the system or just assuming it is the same as some other country, you could lose badly.

I get really annoyed with the stupid questions on this site. Why Americans think their country is the best in the world is beyond me

I agree with you but if you want to know why and how they can charge so much, do nothing other than see how many bankruptcies' are a direct cause of medical expenses. The USA already has the greatest number of bankruptcies both by absolute number and per 100,000 people.
Although this is not the single reason Hospitals and Clinics have to charge so much it is the greatest part of the cause.

If you are a medical business in the USA you have to make a profit, so defaults of any descxtion must be factored in to the invoices you do get paid. And to make matters worse for the profit driven businesses they are not allowed to refuse treatment to anyone who turns up with an emergency or I believe if the person is a minor. They can try and hold the person to get their details but it’s illegal to stop them leaving unless they call the police and let’s face it they might, but by the time the police arrive the patient could be on the other side of the world.

Imagine a business where a large percentage of customers either go bankrupt or just walk away with goods and services. Could a fast food restaurant just charge £20 for a burger to cover those who dont or cant pay? NO, that business wouldn't last very long because those that can pay would just go make it themselves. But Hospitals are not normal businesses they offer a service that cannot normally be done at home DIY so to speak. They also have to meet certain laws which make them stay open and operate an ER no matter how much they obxt.

This is just one of the reasons I think the block headed attitude to healthcare in the USA is nuts, pure nuts, but not the only one. I am loath to blame the Doctors and Nurses who like in the UK do a tough job under difficult circumstances, and most of them really do care about people.

I think the change in the health system in the USA will not come from either faction of government who are equally useless, but from those Doctors and Nurses who are fed up of dealing with sick people who only turn up when it's either too late or so far gone, instead of needing a few stitches they need an intensive care bed for sepsis.

Did you know that over 80% of US citizens want a social healthcare system, most favour the NHS model. But as both parties are right wing (by European standards) they dont care what 80% want they would rather spend the money on a military so large it could basically fight the whole world combined and win.

I would say the first thing Americans need to do is rid themselves of the cabal which allows the “best” health care services in the world charge insane prices for access ending up making them the sick man of the world.

Most Americans will tell you the medical outcomes in the USA are the best in the world and to some extent they would be right but that’s like the UAE where the hospitals/clinics/Doctors are first rate for those who can pay for it but for the rest they just die at home and their bodies are quietly repatriated with no one caring. My kids lived in Dubai I have stories of that system which even make my skin crawl.

In the USA there are far too many people probably millions who never go to a doctor for fear of losing everything and so they die of medical incidence which would in the UK, even privately cost less than £500, they fecking die for what is effectively the price of a bloody TV. Oh and yes I just used bad language but if I then go on to tell you that most of those that die for peanuts don’t have English as their mother tongue you might excuse me if my language gets even more offensive. There are no stats but I wonder how many children loose a parent or two simply because they don’t speak English very well, their skin colour is not white or they are immigrants. If someone calls another person a bad word all hell is the result but when that person dies for the same reasons no one talks about it.

The USA and Sweden are so dramatically different in population that you can’t reasonably expect the same system of healthcare to work for both. Not even just talking population size, but other factors including general health of the individuals as well. I’m not excusing the total rip off perpetrated on the US citizen by the incestuous relationship between hospitals, insurers, and politicians either. I’m just saying the US has to have a much different system that I’m not sure is possible to construct well.

Ben Redmond
Population wouldn’t matter, you simply scale it. We already have an infrastructure of providers and healthcare facilities, so simply shift the billing aspect to a single biller, just put everyone on Medicare and institute the appropriate compensation guidelines and prescxtion medication profit limits.

And tell people how much your taxes are compared to Americans. See this is what people dont get. Americans dont want to pay for anything. Even our communists dont want to pay for shit lol

Abigail Adams
Ur totally wrong how majorly of Americans want. Many Americans don’t mind to pay taxes as long as the accessing to very affordable healthcare is guaranteed. US is the only developed country with no universal healthcare for all Americans & residents. Wealthy people don’t want to pay more taxes & because potentially paying more taxes to help other poorer Americans. Especially in terms of healthcare, most Americans including healthcare workers believe US is one of the worst.

There are a couple issues: 1) that is waaay overprices but was necessary so they screwed the OP over and 2) insurance only serves to drive up costs for the finger. We went through a period of self-insurance and you find that the amount that is BILLED for a procedure is astronomically high (and the self-insured or effectively uninsured like the OP) have to pay that top line number. Insurance companies pay only a fraction of that huge amount. Probably that $12k would have been under half and maybe much, much less) with insurance.

Christian Chartier
Terry where are you located? Reason being insurance companies pay top line here, but if you self pay the fees are often 70% less than what they charge insurance companies.

We have insurance! It works great for us, we pay very little on every visit. about 88–90% of Americans actually have quite good insurance, the press literally lie about our healthcare, it's excellent! We've had many hospital visits and many doctor visits for our family of 5 over many years, never a problem. This is actually what it's like for almost everyone. We actually have a great healthcare system with top notch facilities and Doctors! We only need to increase help for the unemployed and underemployed, that is really the only weakness and we have improved that over the last 14 years drastically. Also, anyone can ALWAYS be treated at our emergency rooms if needed at ALL public hospitals.
