As a Nigerian, I appreciate the obxtive coverage of my country from your video. Extra kudos for not simply using the "colonialism" excuse that so many other people (even here) tend to use. It's genuinely tragic how mismanaged it has become. From civil war and tribalism plaguing us to military dictatorships and economic mismanagement ruining our fragile nation. Even after returning to democracy, we still face corruption, MASSIVE insecurity, lack of infrastructure, and economic mismanagement. There are some things to be cautiously optimistic about. Our current government has finally ended the useless fuel subsidy program that was a huge drain on our economy for decades and they have been implementing several phases of economic and tax reforms to stabilize our inflation, diversify our economy, curb insecurity and chronic deficits and also to curb corruption. It's resulting in hardships but is also generating some positive results..

@faraibee
I wonder why experts ignore tribalism when it comes to Africa. Botswana is mainly 1 tribe unlike Nigeria's dozens of tribes.
If you live in Africa you know how tribes play a big role

Nigeria is an epitome of how mismanagement can seriously drag the entire economy down.

@jaredspencer3304
I wish people in rich countries would stop infantilizing poor people. "Scamming was the only option to feed their families." What about all the millions and millions of Nigerians who somehow found a way to feed their families without resorting to crime? Being poor doesn't make you immune to morality, and poor people would be the first to tell you that.

@adeyiwunmi
The problem is directly related to recent Nobel winners theory that good institutions is what makes good economies

@corvusglaive5769
You forgot to mention a very important point: currency depreciation. The naira has lost over 50% of its value in just one year.

I started watching your videos during my Freshman year at Indiana University (Economics and Finance Major). You have been frequently quoted in business and non-business papers relating to Economics. Your videos have more reach than you might imagine. Thank you, keep the quality going.

@thomas316
Nigeria isn't alone. From the late 90s to about 2015 developing countries were catching up to developed countries but over the last decade they've been falling behind again with a widening gap by most measures.
One thing I see is that developed countries are hoovering up young, talented people from developing countries. It seems obvious to me that if the young educated and entrepreneurial are leaving a country will not advance.

@CryingCroc.
I remember, back in the 80s, reading about Nigeria's political leaders clamoring for a permanent UN Security Council seat - stating Nigeria was ready to lend Africa's voice on the world stage. That was forty years ago. Sadly, the social-political-economic state of Nigeria (and Africa in general) have actually fallen even farther behind in these last forty years! One might argue that Nigeria was more advanced than China, India or Indonesia in multiple fronts back then - but today, these Asian countries are far more advanced - esp. China.

@atownofbigheads
One of the main reasons between developed and developing countries is the inefficient governments. There is a level of corruption and bureaucracy in developed countries as well, but in poor and developing countries, the politicians and elites strip the country of all its resources for the highest bidder and the poor/middle class are left to fight for scraps.

As a South African... How DRC and Nigeria isn't the richest country in the face of the world is SHOCKING to me

To be honest to me the problem of nigeria is not primarily government or leaders to me it is the people as a whole their way of thinking behaviour and perspective on issues

Nigeria has so much potential. If they could just get a few good leaders in a row. They could be not only the leading country in Africa but, among other world powers.

As a Nigerian thank you for this analysis. This is the best video on the Nigerian economy. Very non biased, non-judgmental and factual

@SiddhantA_Balls
It went from 500B$+ in 2023 down to just around 250B$+ in 2024, so it did lost 50% of it's economy in one year, similar to Lebanon's situation across the 2010's.

@wise5674
This was a good video. As a Nigerian economist, I must say you put a lot of things into the broader global context, which was helpful. There were some crucial things you omitted like the currency exchange rates, the recent economic reforms and the underperforming power sector. But no video is perfect and I still give you a B+.

@leftofyaba
nigeria is in this state because of pervasive corruption and a general lack of accountability; however, its potential remains immense and undeniable. i am proud to be a nigerian but it breaks my heart to see so much wasted potential.
nevertheless, i still believe in a brighter future ahead. what we need are leaders who believe so too and are committed to empowering the country rather than exploiting it for personal gain.

@KeiNovak
Didn't Nigeria have some sort of extremely strict ForEx (USD) controls in place around 2015 or so?
I heard from a Nigerian friend back then that students were having to drop out or something because their parents suddenly couldn't remit (i.e. transfer funds for) their tuition.
Wouldn't that play a huge part in the lack of foreign investment, especially if the profits can't be taken out of the country due to the ForeEx restrictions?

@FinanceThroughTime
Nigeria is hidden African gem, it has enormous potential to rise and become one of the most economically growing countries, but they need to stabilize the Naira first and reduce dependence on oil by investing in other sectors more.

I never actually thought the Nigerian Prince scam came from Nigeria. Why would you use your own country's name in a scam? I just thought scammers were using a well-known but still mysterious African country that had a monarchy.

@ikeemmanuel
See how everything stated going down immediately a new political party took over the country since 2015, and yet many of the people still supports and keeps voting for the same party based on religion affiliation, political party and tribe. The country is just too divided among religion, tribes and region to grow as a nation.

For a moment I was expecting Ghana to be mentioned when I saw some clips with Ghana vehicle plate...
I think Ghana will be another interesting country to look at... considering it was one of the first countries to gain independence and a rollercoaster economy

@TrangleC
Apparently Nigeria's population is much smaller than reported. Regions get money from the central government on the basis of their population numbers, so they inflate those.

@amanuelnigatu9199
Can you do a video on Ethiopia? It is one of Africa’s biggest economies and has been one of the fastest growing for some time now. However, its been having a lot of economic turmoil as of late with inflation, regime change, and inner turmoil. I think it would make for a very interesting video to research and make!

@doomer_to_boomer2402
Did the way the country was "put together by the British" lead to groups not wanting to leave their homelands? I can't help but think that would have been the case in any circumstances

Does Nigeria's capital still have a water treatment plant that isn't connected to anything, and therefore there is no running water available anywhere in the city? Yes, a water supply but no pipes.

Simple as this; bad leadership. The moment Nigeria gets a good leader, everything will turn around. It has the systems in place for a good leader to make the changes he needs, but theres no one who will make those changes.

@solomonokoli212
It's insane how their economy is now smaller than Scotland, Finland, or even the Czech Republic, especially as almost every financial institution in the 2010s predicted a trillion-dollar GDP for Nigeria by 2030. With South Africa also struggling and in terrible decline, perhaps Egypt can now claim the title of the African 'Superpower.'

Bro, as a European I hoped and thought many African countries, especially Nigeria and DR Congo, will slowly grow into strong and wealthy countries. Instead the entire continent is destabilising. It really breaks my heart. This continent and the people of Africa just don't seem to get a break...

@judeike5660
Nigeria didn't lose 50% of its real GDP. It only lost GDP when measured in $USD because of over 200% duation of the local currency that drastically increased the exchange rate.

Branding can be very important for foreign investment to start flowing into a country. I’m from a country always called the poorest in the EU, every story in the news is about Corruption, political instability or miserable living standards for the poorest. Despite a favourable business climate, it struggles to get investment

@thomasbetts01
Europe is not the only place like this. The difficulties that have arisen in the current generation are heartbreaking. I wanted to know how to spend some money that I had. I utilised a portion of it for my e-commerce venture, however it failed. I'm considering my options for investing the remaining funds, but I'm not really sure which path to go.

Oil has been the greatest curse for us as a nation, no other sector has been able to thrive due to our over reliance on it, let's not even discuss the high level of corruption. Regardless we are resilient and would never give up striving for a better Nigeria

I know this is slightly off point but as a UK academic l supervised a Nigerian student writing a dissertation on public health provision in Nigeria. When l looked at the level of provision it was way behind countries with a similar GDP and pretty much the worst rates of infant mortality in the world, among other indicators. Another Nigerian student, true to form, tried to scam me ( and other staff).

natefoster5454
I've heard of stories where some petrol refinery security officers were bribed. And then that group would then tank out some of the oil and sell it on the black market. It's good for them in the short run, but utterly awful for them in the long run.

@oquaika-qua3043
I assure you the problem in Nigeria isn’t branding. It’s the institutions within the country itself. Nigeria has weak institutions that is susceptible to whomever is in power. The growth in the early 21st century was simply because those in power were not completely callous and had a brain on their head. Even with the corruption they were able to get things done. Since 2014, they have brought in a military leader with a track record of not understanding basic economics; and subsequently a wanton criminal and his cronies. With the already weak institutions, anyone with a bit of clairvoyance can tell you that is a recipe for disaster.

@atypicalafrican

It always vexes me that the people who say that Africa's development was hamstrung by colonialists arbitrarily drawing borders forcing different ethnic groups together are the same people who advocate for multiculturalism and tolerance in the West.

@chipcook5346
Didn't economists tell us that Nigeria will have a billion people and a world power? Of course, they did. Are you sure colonialism is at fault here? The cultures were there before the English. The cultures are still there after the English are gone. Culture is fate. Ask South Africa.
