Although Korea has a relatively homogeneous culture, there isn't a cookie cutter answer to how South Koreans feel about North Korea.
There are multiple layers of emotions and feelings and they range on where you live, your age and your background. A grandma living along the DMZ is probably going to feel more strongly about the conflict than a 15 year old living on Jeju island (southern most area of Korea).

Older people experienced the war, saw their country ripped apart then saw South Korea become one of the richest countries in the world in less than 50 years. Younger people see how convenient their lives are now and know it's due to the economic development after the Korean war. So often times, if you ask Koreans if they want reunification, they'll say "yes, eventually. But not now" because they know that accepting North Korea would flood the country with refugees-- plummeting the country's economy down as the country essentially rebuilds itself (think the reunification of East and West Germanies).

I will say that younger people seem more desensitized to the fact North Koreans are humans--probably because they have grown their entire lives with a North Korea that makes missile threats to destroy South Korea every six months or so. I went on a trip to JSA (the Joint Security Area in the DMZ) and upon seeing a North Korean soldier, a young Korean companion couldn't stop saying he had goosebumps after seeing the North Korean soldier and proceeded to call all his friends about the experience.

On the other hand, the older generation grew up in a united Korea that they saw torn apart in part by the South Korean government. After the war, they then saw a South Korea with authoritarian regimes similar if not worse than North Korea, so I would say the demonization of North Koreans didn't take a strong hold on them when compared to younger people.

One thing I definitely can say is that South Koreans don't think North Korea much as a threat. Because I lived here for two missile threat attacks already and not one Korean I spoke to was concerned and everyone's lives continued as per usual.

Good point. The separation was/is a foreign decision. It is possible that the North Koreans are brainwashed to think badly of South Korea, but deep down they must know that we are family.

Most of South Koreans I know through Internet chatting will always remember North Korea and North Koreans as their respective brothers, cousins and sisters.
They have together been in the history of them. Of course, they understand, how painful the past is.
Same in Vietnam, Korea was divided. By Vietnam was later, gone to commies. Korea remains divided, and this hurt every Koreans.

I hope they will unite again. But not in Vietnamese path. The Vietnamese path put too much mistakes that we have been now, just a third-world country and lack of significant role unlike Korea. Even after the communist unification, most of Vietnamese overseas still being discriminated by Vietnamese communist regime, even after 1986 reforms. This continues to drain down Vietnamese state. Because we were “forced” to unite by arms, not by the heart of Vietnamese people together in both North and South.

I agree with you on Korea, but I think you're way too critical of Vietnam. Vietnam was forced to turn to Communism because no one wanted to help them win independence except the USSR. Ho Chi Minh asked for US aid but they were supporting France.
And Vietnam is changing, there are bright times ahead hopefully. South Korea was also once poorer than Africa, but look at them now. With honesty, patriotism and hard work Vietnam can become like them too.
There are no miracles, but a concentracted effort of the nation's best and brightest will undoubtedly make a difference in both Vietnam and Korea.

It doesn't help that official North Korean propaganda says that theirs is the only legitimate government for the whole Korean peninsula. Basically, in North Korea, it's not called "North Korea", it's just "Korea". To say otherwise would be considered treasonous. So, loyal North Koreans would simply call themselves "Korean".

I have served two tours in the USAF in South Korea. The last one I spend one year at the Monterey CA Defense Language School and I learn Korean so I could adequately understand and read. I served one year as a joint staff officer serving both commanders (UN and South Korean). My impression of the ROK military is that they chomp at the bit to get at the North Koreans. They are stronger, more motivated, and more intelligent now then ever before. They make their own M1 tank called the K1. The ROKAF maintains a mix of F16 and F15 aircraft far superior to anything the Hermit kingdom has. They don't need the UN or US to help them anymore. Release them and they will reunify the peninsula themselves in two weeks.

I have served two tours in the USAF in South Korea. The last one I spend one year at the Monterey CA Defense Language School and I learn Korean so I could adequately understand and read. I served one year as a joint staff officer serving both commanders (UN and South Korean). My impression of the ROK military is that they chomp at the bit to get at the North Koreans. They are stronger, more motivated, and more intelligent now then ever before. They make their own M1 tank called the K1. The ROKAF maintains a mix of F16 and F15 aircraft far superior to anything the Hermit kingdom has. They don't need the UN or US to help them anymore. Release them and they will reunify the peninsula themselves in two weeks.

No too much sympathy but more confusion and keeping away. It's not hard to understand it's too difficult to unite the two countries in peace when there are huge power gap and valuable differences. A better example is South Korean society is not friendly to defectors from North, who can be only at the very bottom of the society.

They hate the government, not the people. North Koreans, to most South Koreans, are still Koreans and, therefore, are still their brothers and sisters.
