Flawed but well intended.
There have been some remarkable achievements including creating the internal market and customs unx; integrating former Warsaw Pact countries; enshring rights for EU citizens and providing consumer benefits.
The creation of the single currency; failure to avert a war in the Balkans and the Common Agricultural Policy have been major flaws. But the EU’s mistakes are no different than those mistakes made by successive governments in my home country.

My own government has taken by our country to war in Iraq; mispent public money; approved the disasterous Poll Tax and have been embroiled in the expense and mismanagement of domestic public transport. No institution is perfect: not my government nor the EU.
It’s a shame that Brexit reveals a UK whose government are poorly prepared and lack expertise while attempting to negotiate with the EU who are using process, structure and time to achieve their obxtives. It’s leaving me preferring the EU over my own amateurish and shoddy domestic Conservative government.

For most countries in Western Europe the creation of the euro was no more than a formalisation of reality. Their currencies had been brought into line with the D-Mark and followed its valuation vs the US dollar and other currencies diligently. Base lending rates established by the various central banks did the same w.r.t. the base lending rate set by the Bundesbank. This situation had arisen over time since the early/mid 1980s. Effectively, what the establishment of the euro and the European Central Bank achieved was that the presidents of the other central banks in Europe regained some influence over monetary policy where they had had none before.

The problem was that several currencies were brought into the euro which should not have been, because their governments’ fiscal policies were insufficiently robust as were their economies. However, the argument that is often put forward that the euro prevented them from duing their currencies is faulty. Essentially it says that a government’s policy should be to impoverish its people to solve their economic problems. The good thing about the euro is that it has taken this cop-out out of the politicians’ hands and forces them to confront the real problems in their economies and in their fiscal regimens.

I had the same thought on the currency issue. I think the EUR and Schengen habe really created a tangible benefit for the personal experience of the average Citizen and I think it has brought support for the EU up in general. I’m not sure whether these advantages would be equally relevant for the UK as “just hopping over the border” is a little harder from an Island, but I’m wondering whether Remain support would have been higher if Brits would have enjoyed these advantages as well.

There is no question that the Single Currency could have been executed better, in particular by not looking the other way out of political ambition, when some members cook their books to avoid failing the convergence criteria. But despite that I think we’re doing better with the EUR than with that ton of constituent currencies.

With all the “problems” for smaller countries/economies in the EU, there is little doubt or scepticism, that the single currency (Euro) long term, is infinitely “better” than the national currencies of the past ! As for “cooking the books” there is ample evidence to show that this was not done by “conspiratorial” governments that wanted to hide the real state of their respective economies but done with the full knowledge, assistance and often cooperation of the ECB and other major EU economies (France, Germany etc) for purely political reasons. . . and in my view rightly so !

Prematurely admitting Greece into the Eurozone, most people (including the majority of Greeks) will readily concede as a mistake (for all concerned). That however does not make the creation of the Euro a bad idea – in fact it was a great idea that the US has fought tooth and nail from the beginning not wanting to lose the most preferred hard currency, US$ world monopoly. Imposing the Euro (directly or indirectly) to most EU member states irrespective of their fiscal record, was not a “mistake” but a political decision. Greece was NOT the only country that did not fulfil the criteria but the decision was made on 300% on political, not economic grounds ! Long term the EU and the Euro are not the best but ONLY way forward for Europe. There are two ways of taking a medicine – slow and prolonged intravenous drip accompanied with monthly doze of pills or open heart surgery, shock therapy !

What do you think about the EU?
The best thing which happened to this continent. The EU is a spiritual model which we all aspire and strive for. There is a saying in Sanskrit ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ which means ‘the world is one family’ and the EU is one good example. A region free from borders where people have equal right to work, live and move wherever they want.

Before the EU, European history was full of wars and too many differences to count. The formation of the EU bridged the gap and brought people together. Have you seen any war between France and Germany once the EU is formed? Even during the BRExiT crisis, not a single shot fired from any end. Still, they are only negotiating in a peaceful manner instead of going for war, which was the norm in the past.

I think the EU model should be adopted by other regions where people should create borderless unxs and focus more on the economy, education, health, peace and equality.
The formation of the EU is also pragmatic considering changing geopolitical scene around the world. In today’s world outside the EU there are 4 powerful blocs: US, China, India, Russia and to negotiate and work with them the EU is a great answer. If you don’t belong to any of these 5 blocs you will struggle to get your negotiation moving.

Can you image Hungary or Latvia going and negotiating with a giant like China on their terms? They can try this but will never get a favourable deal. So, no matter how many flaws you see within the EU, please stick to it and see the brighter side. The majority of countries became prosperous after joining the EU. Europe has seen the most peaceful time since the formation of the EU. It is in the interest of EU member states to be together and should try to come more closer.

I have travelled to 25 EU member states so far and almost everyone from the young generation (millennials, new generation) love the EU. I have also met some EU citizens who don’t like the EU, but unfortunately they forget to see decades of peace and prosperity in this region.
Overall the EU is a great thing which happened to Europe.

What do you think about the EU?
It’s imperfect, but it’s the most humane and liberal of the current mega-economies (i.e. USA, EU, China). It strikes a mostly sensible balance between the needs of its citizens and the unavoidable fact that businesses need to make money in order to provide for a good material standard of living for said citizens. India has great potential, but sectarianism may scupper its chances. Brazil also has massive potential, but political extremism may scupper theirs.

What are your views on EU?
In the modern, globalized world, there is a need for international cooperation. The EU is the infrastructure making it possible to solve the problems of the globalized world together with your neighbors. It takes over where the nation state is insufficient.
The EU has made a considerable impact to the wealth and safety of my generation.

Through the creation of the single market and a number of other trade faciliation arrangements, it has had a crucial impact on the wealth among Europeans in the 20th century and ahead.
By entering free trade agreements with currently 70 other countries, the EU has reduced protectionism and increased welfare not only in the EU but globally.
By maintaining the institutions necessary to solve cross border issues, it has created the longest period of peace between the member states in the world history.
The EU might be boring, unsexy and difficult to understand but it is crucial to everyday life among Europeans.

But it’s not free trade with the rest of the world. It’s full of tariffs and restrictions not many of which are logical. Like the tax on sugar from cane where sugar from beet is tax free, yet it’s actually the same compound.

Keep in mind that the EU didn’t invent tarriffs. For the countries taking part in EU trading arrangements, there definitely are fewer and lower tarriffs and fewer trading barriers than there were before and otherwise would have been.
Having said that, it goes without saying that the EU can ot affors to be naive and remove all tarriffs unilaterally without raising similar demands towards its trading partners.

What are your views on EU?
By the strength of our common endeavour we achieve more than we achieve alone, so as to create for each of us the means to realise our true potential.
Or - to put it another way - the only thing that can redeem mankind is cooperation.
We are stronger together, and if the last three years that has shown us anything is that leaving The EU is going to leave us weaker, more isolated and more alone than ever before.
There are people that would have you believe Britannia still rules the waves - that all they have to do is invoke the spirits of ‘66, wave the flag and say “we beat the Germans once, we can do it again” and suddenly we will be the strength which in old days moved earth and heaven.

Once we lave, we will be at the mercy of every other country, begging for scraps and hoping they will take pity on us.
The idea that we can go it alone is utter bullshit. We should be part of a united Europe, making it stronger. Not sowing the seeds of division and hatred and destruction.
The EU was our greatest chance to be a part of something big, and we fucked it up. And for that, we have - I believe - signed our own death warrant.

For me, European unx represents the following things:
Freedom of movement.
Political and economic freedoms.
Security from Russian political and economic pressure.
Integration into a more global and a modern world.
Shared political and economic systems.

Shared common values (this is the most important point).
Therefore it can be said that I´m a vocal supporter of European unx. I see EU as a natural process of integration of European states in an evermore globalizing world. I think that only a united Europe can compete with countries like China without losing the significance of each of its individual country. This does not mean that I would be opposed to the ideas of nation-state inside the countries that comprise the European unx and I do not wish EU developing into a federation. I´m also a nationalist. But still, I think unx is the only way for Europe and I think this unx is about as good as it can be as it is based on values that majority of the member states are sharing. European unx is also the ideological and mental home for Europeans.
