It's hard to answer every aspect of this question, but I will tell you some of the trends that I see. I've been hiring software developers in India and globally for many years, and hire developers through our platform http://staff.com.
Future trends for the Indian software industry

Indian developers accessing online degrees and free courses online from US universities. It is possible to study online from MIT for free. The future will be full of self-taught individuals who availed of all of the freely available course materials to educate themselves.

I shall like to answer this question point wise.

Except few, most of the Engineering students in India pursue Engineering to become rich, easily.
Except meager graduates from the sub-standard Private Indian Engineering colleges, all get recruited into Services based IT Industry.
They are merely able to earn their livelihood by getting recruited into it.

The internet penetration is increasing in India, like never before.
The students are becoming smart as they are able to read and understand the non-bookish-English language & experiences/tips(regarding everything) , through Internet, like never before.
The school passouts are getting more aware about the good and bad courses & institutions and all the related pros and cons, like never before.

Internet in India among the young Indians is still in the budding state.
With their curious minds and command over non-bookish English language, it would take them 'seconds' to know the difference in experience in a top-notch Engineering college and a poor Engineering college, and hence the difference in the work performed in Services based company and a product based company.
Almost all the Engineering graduates in India would try to get into a product based IT company.

The deserving student would work as hard as any Engineering graduate in world.
He might probably get recruited in a Product based IT company.

So, I am highly positive that India shall be able to compete with USA in developing products in the field of Computer Engineering, in about 10 years from now. It would take some time for China to learn English language to the level that Indians do.
I am confident.

Software is doing to India what it did to US several years back.
- Long back there were enterprise sw companies that started automating

- and many other big and small areas. There is lot of potential and we can only grow from here. We are adding (maybe) 200-500 starts up a quarter.
While a Google is still a distant thought (a topic over-communicated), Apple is a very very distant thought (yes I am a fanboy but Design thinking and hw is really far).

A lot of these offering are in sync with global developments and demand and that the World is their playground. Some interesting ones there.
Niche and growing areas:
- Automate automation, companies writing software to do automated testing, automated code writing, etc. Companies putting up platforms for others to use it (PAAS, IAAS). eg. cloud data analytics platform, that hide the complexity with storing and managing data and provides fast, easy path to analysis and business insight.

I also think that we are seeing $1B valuations already in sw+people based services play. Thats the formula for India really. Not pure Sw. Have a great sw to manage data and business process flow, and good people to provide services on top of it. E.g., Payroll, HR sw companies with service delivery teams and Analytics companies with an asset (platform) + services on top of it

Here is my thought..major giants doing IT businesses already laid their infrastructure foundations well within the country..it means company should constantly try sustaining the business whereever they are in. To be a top leader in the competetive world, innovation should happen on the front end team to get more business constantly. According to many journels we are not even doing 15% of world IT business in india. However, Onsite/offshore business model has been well demonstrated to many fortune 500 . The awareness is created, only way for our companies to look at is sustinence and growth.
Individual front, employees are getting experienced and also their expectation window getting wider on salary, grade and opportunities. But companies are still looking at the pyramid structure and need to do differently to keep the employees satisfied.

If China doesn't compete with India in Service sector, then Software Industry in India will be strong.
But if they venture out into this sector as well, then things may not be the same for Indian Software ppl.

However software engineering has great future in India.
