No, I would not.
Through pay deductions I paid about 4000 Euros for the public health insurance in 2023. It covers anything I need to recover, useful prevention and if necessary rehabilitation and trainings.

Co pay for medicine is very limited.
For keeping it fair: in 2023 teeth fillings from my childhood needed to be replaced. The public insurance covers very simple fillings. I have an additional private insurance package which covered about 80 percent of my high end fillings.

The package was about 330 Euro in 2023 and covers additional services where public covers the necessary minimum. It also covers treatment abroad and repatriation.
All in all the German systems keeps healthcare to be affordable for everyone without any risk of being financially ruined.
From my point of view it is a question of dignity.

I am from Sweden and live in USA since 2000. If I could I would have USA to fo away from the present system to the Swedish model. Get the care and never worrying about the bills. I have been between jobs a few times and pay for my own healthcare twice. It was brutal and I was extremely close from selling everything and move back to Sweden again.

No sane caring European would ever prefer the US „healthcare“ system!
the parents of two friends in the US refused cancer treatment because they didn’t want their families to go bankrupt!
why would any person with empathy want that?

Of course not.
In Europe anyone has a fighting chance to survive because every one gets some sort of treatment no matter the income. It is more or less free ( though of course you pay taxes).
In the US if you do not have enough money to pay for health insurance you croak. And even if you have some money a low grade insurance will let you die after a certain amount of money has been spent on you.
But most important: in Europe they do not know the meaning of pre existent condition…

Not a chance. I like living. I like being able to have whatever cancer treatment my doctor thinks is appropriate without having to persuade an insurance company to pay for it. I like being treat without any up front costs and the fear of going bankrupt or dying if I can’t afford it. I love that my family and friends are entitled to the same

This has been posted for 3 months, and no European has seen fit to respond. It is only us feeble minded idiots in the USA that think “pay as you go” healthcare is the right way to go. The big money winners in the USA are the insurance companies. They profit enough to balance the national debt in 4 years. If we eliminated them not only would our health care pay for everyone, but we could pay down the national debt in a short period of time.

This does not include hospital and drug company profits - just on the insurance side.
No European would trade universal health care for debt, poor service and additional costs to the patient.

The only people in Europe who want a US style healthcare system are those who will profit from it. Everyone else laughs at the idea as you would have to be certifiably insane to want it over what we have.

There isn't a country in the world that would prefer the US health system, much less European countries. The US is the only major country to not have universal healthcare. It ranks even lower than some 3rd world countries.

It should be an embarrassment for the US to be the richest, and yet won't use the tax dollars for the betterment of its tax papers and instead used it for military that can't budget or show anything worth the exorbitant cost being dumped into it,. But as long as the military complex is funded and healthcare industry is making money no matter the cost of lived to its citizens, who cares.

I don’t know how to say this in a polite way, so I’ll just say no and hope you’ll understand. The average Norwegian pays 3% of their income in healthcare although it’s a bit difficult to say because we pay 7,9% including retirement savings and every other type of normal insurance. But a study showed that for how services gets used, it was 3% on healthcare. There’s “no” deductibles ($15us to see doctor for a max of $300us per year including medicine cost) and there are no copayments and it’s unlimited. All hospital stays are completely free. I’m covered in all of Europe. I pay ca $20us per month in private health insurance and that’s mostly in case I should need a new drug before it’s been approved in Norway.

No. The American system seems terrifying to me and it seems to sort of enslave people by their dependence on their employer. But requiring payment for childbirth seems evil. I don’t know how to put it any other way. In Norway it used to be the law that a citizen could be turned outlaw and deported forever for failure to celebrate the birth of a child. A new Norwegian has been born; we are in _her_ debt.

Why would I want to switch from a system that provides almost free healthcare, allows me to choose my doctor and hospital, gives my doctor the freedom to prescribe the medication that's best for me, sets the prices for prescxtion drugs, and ensures that I have access to treatment for serious illnesses, difficult childbirths, or prolonged stays in intensive care, all without bankrupting me or my loved ones?

Let me tell you a personal story. I have a son with asthma, and I've spent countless nights in the emergency room when his attacks were too severe for his inhaler. The cost of his inhaler? Only 7€, and I didn't have to pay a penny out of pocket. There was a time when he had to spend 10 days in bed with an oxygen mask, undergoing respiratory therapy and numerous tests. The bill for his treatment probably amounted to thousands of euros, but I didn't have to pay a single cent. He also had to travel 600 kms away from our home for a 21-day treatment at a thermal station every year from the age of 3 to 10, and everything was fully covered, including accommodation and treatments.

What's the real cost of all this? As a civil servant, 7.5% of my salary is deducted from my paycheck each month, and I also pay for private insurance. With my current salary of 3358€, 750€ is taken out for social security, retirement, and private insurance, leaving me with 2600€ a month. This is considered a good paycheck in France, as the average is 2200€. The system works similarly for everyone in France, with some variations depending on employment status.

So, do you honestly think I would give up a system that provides such a safety net for a reasonable cost, not just for me but for everyone in need, in favor of the incredibly complex and outrageously expensive American healthcare system, which you can lose if you lose your job?

Really?!
Let me share a joke made by a French comedian about the American healthcare system. He said, "How do American doctors diagnose an illness? They call your bank. No money? Then you're not sick!" It may be a caricature, but from what I've read in the news, it's not that far from the truth. As someone once said, if the French had made "Breaking Bad," the series would have ended with, "Do you have your Carte Vitale?" because the main character wouldn't have had to turn to making meth to pay for his cancer treatment.

To add to my argument, a few months ago, a young American man in his twenties died from diabetes because he couldn't afford his insulin treatment. That is something that would never happen in France. Here, diabetes is recognized as a long-term illness, and all related treatments are completely covered, free of charge for the patient. This same principle applies to all long-term illnesses, including cancer. I should also mention that as someone who struggled with obesity for years, I was accepted into a comprehensive program that granted me access to bariatric surgery, all free of charge. Now, I am 24 kilos lighter and much healthier, all thanks to French social security and universal healthcare!

Several times I’ve had scans within 48 hours of calling my doctor, for free. I can compare the US, UK, Canada and AU because I have therapy clients in these countries. I find that the UK and AU model could be better because people have a choice between private and public resources, and somehow they end up waiting longer than in Canada for appointments. Canada`s healthcare is public with a few obvious exceptions - dental, optometry etc.

so how does Canada`s system work? As a senior I pay 15% income tax and 13% sales tax, and healthcare comes directly out of general government resources. The doctors run a business and bill at agreed rates with no refusals. So… recently I had an eye troubling me. Called an opthomologist and he got me in later that day, he wanted to be sure his diagnosis was right, so he sent me to a hospital right away. That evening I was seen and had a Ct scan, no issues, and got a prescxtion all within two hours. No charges so far, except for parking. Canadians are so angry about hospital parking fees! And the antibiotic cot $4.11. This isn’t the first time that I’ve had Ct scan and even MRI within 48 hours of my enquiry.

In Europe, we have a healthcare system, in the US you have a commercial model. They aren’t comparable.
in Europe we have a foundational value system where all citizens have value. Their contribution to the economy is more valuable than the cost of healthcare. Due to this, the system is rigged to provide healthcare to everyone and get them as fast as possible back to work.

In the US, this system is replaced by a commercial system where the insurance companies own the value of healthcare. The model is not rigged to benefit society, but the commercial players within the healthcare domain.

The paradox here, is that many citizens in the US claim that they don’t want to pay for other peoples healthcare services and due to this want to pay an insurance fee instead of tax, but then they really don’t understand how the insurance companies work and create revenue for their owners. What they are actually doing is paying into a pool of money used to cover health bills for individuals if needed, but that also makes someone rich instead of what could be best for society.
It says something about the values in a country…

Australian here. The USA does not have a national healthcare system. It’s health care BUSINESS is the most expensive and least effective in the developed world. All developed nations (of which USA is plainly not one) have some form of single payer, or similar UNIVERSAL health care system. None of them would consider changing to a US style of system

American, at all costs.
In the EU, you often pay monthly fees higher than any insurance in the US. Fees are obligatory and you wait years (literal years) for some appointments or surgeries. You complain about 3 months of waiting? Some of us here wait 5 years for a knee surgery and if you miss your appointment - another 5. US system provides the best healthcare in the world, the difference is that you ought to choose your insurance company & type of insurance. In the EU you often end up paying twice - once for obligatory national system that you never use and second fee for private healthcare which is far more efficient. I have used the national system twice in my entire life and yet I pay nearly 10% of my salary for it. And I have to spend another 5% for private healthcare provider.

In the US, when your salary increases - your healthcare insurance cost does not. In the EU - the more you earn, the more you have to pay for the same services you’re often not interested in, because they simply don’t work properly.

The reasons why Americans complain so much about their healthcare is simply because they can choose to pay less or not at all for their healthcare - in the EU you’re forced to do so and insurance is automatically deducted from your salary by your employer at all times and most people are totally unaware how much is their health insurance, how much is their retirement fee, etc.
The system is built in a way where people are usually totally unaware how much is deducted from their salaries and for what.
But the national healthcare system DOES NOT WORK.
