I was in Chongqing the other week (for CNY, stupid I know) and left a shared battery pack at a noodle place. I didn't realise I had left the charger until I was on the other side of the city, panicked and started headed back, checked the app and it turned out someone had already returned the battery for me.
People in China are just so nice.

Great video. My only concern is that more and more westerners will go to China and it will eventually become less safe. I hope not, as a westerner I get so despondent with life here and would hate for China to start down the slippery slope. I retire in 10 years, I have an apartment near Dongguan and can’t wait to live there.

They will get punished. Unlike in the West.

@VSL_babyface
@trueseeker262 so true, they will let the guy go, even if they imprison the guy, its just vacation for him, nothing to be afraid of

Just look what has happened in Japan. The nuisance streamers came in mass and are destroying Japan!!

It is difficult to avoid cameras when committing crimes in China, especially in public places.

@highwind9984
No worries, there is a reason why they install the cameras almost everywhere

@JohnnysCafe_
That can become a reality, the women of Sweden were safe to walk around at night but then a large number of people moved there and it became one of the most dangerous places for women and now they can't go out alone at night, so people with a different cultural background can alter life in an adopted country.

I watched a video of a 24hr unmanned parcel collection store in China where all the parcels were just lying on the shelves, in the UK this would be emptied in 1 night, in the US I doubt it would last the night either, the only difference is that the US thieves would probably live stream the unboxing

@changshu6463
Last year during Chinese new year, a parcel delivery site near my home just left their door wide open so the neighbors could collect the parcel, while the boss are going back home in another city for Chinese new year

@Enfinauniverso
Blows my mind that this can happen in a city. In the West, we are told to accept such things (thefts) happen in urban areas.

@robertwang7825
Ppl in China leave their E bikes unlocked ( there are so many - some 50M are sold every year ) , delivery parcels are left at collection points unattended, old ppl walking /exercising early in the morning, kids are playing even at night. Ofc there is still petty theft but they are quickly apprehended most of the time because cameras have face recognition tech.
The fact that nobody carries cash helps as there is little of value to steal. I live in Guangzhou, I leave my door unlocked when I take my dogs for a walk , never had any problems with crime. It is the best place to live.

@jibb1570
I left my laptop due to fatigue and carelessness the first night I arrived in Shenzhen on the metro after a long plane flight few years ago. Years of work and photos in it. I was panicking in cold sweat and took the return way train arriving after 1.5 hours later, thinking it should be long gone with the number of commuters on these trains. Luckily, someone had handed it in to the station manager earlier n everything inside the bag was intact too. Relieved, just an amazing experience.

For your info:
London Snatch locations.
Bike: Redchurch St, London, E2 (Not the "Safest" area of London)
Phone: Park Lane (Southbound) Just North of Aldford St, W1 (Would be Prime Real Estate for the "Snatchers", close to the Expensive Hotels on that Road).

手机:Park Lane(南行),Aldford St以北,W1(对“抢匪”来说是黄金地段,靠近那条路上的豪华酒店)。

Doing this kind of social experiment in China makes me a Chinese proud and proud! But can we try similar experiments in other countries in Asia at the same time? Like Japan and South Korea?

This is common sense:
You weed out the weeds for grass to grow, or witness your lawn overrun by weeds.
Key takeaway: high cost for crimes and cameras, a lots of them

@yurimiyake
I walked through an empty valley around 9:30 PM. I spotted there’s lots of boxes on the ground, when I approached them and found out those boxes were undelivered packages. They were just piled in front of a delivery centre and nobody kept watching them. BTW, I am living in a tire 4 small city in China, there’s no too many cameras due to lack of public expenditure. In that valley, there’s only one street lamp.

A second-hand Mac book worths 6000 Yuan at most. Stealing it will cause at least one year sentence in jail. It just doesn't worth to be stolen.

@KiatDen

And he was in a mall, a starbucks. Usually, the customers there would be decent enough for not stealing things, and most of them are economically well enough that they don't need money that bad. If it was in a 城中村, it could be a bit tough. But of course, it's also very important that unlike in the US or UK, the police will definitely go after the thief for stealing a Macbook, which is worth some money though not a huge amount.

@Astrophageyep
Plz do not do social experiments like this. First, there is petty theft in China and we do have jails. Second, Leaving your personal items on a table means this table is taken, so shop owners and customers do not like it.

@somewhereinthemiddle3
to understand why people dont steal, you must first understand why people do steal and the root causes that drive such actions.

Low cost for crimes.
And all those bs empowering crimes, even weaponize victim mentality.

Left my bike outside a shop for 2 minutes, then a chav casually walks over and decides to ride away with it.

@nlee8801
QThis reminds me of the story when I was in college. My roommate posted an ad to sell his motorcycle in the campus. One morning there was a knock on the door and he answered the door. The guy introduced himself as a student in our school and he wanted to test drive the motorcycle. My friend, the owner of the motorcycle, gave the key to the guy but he did not ask for anything from the guy, a student ID or any ID. The guy took the motorcycle and my roommate sat at the front porch waiting for the guy and he never came back.

You can leave a laptop on a cafe table in London,
It will be stolen but you can leave it there.

I don't think it's a good idea to temp people.

@lovingmybaby9530
OK so what is the difference to a thief whether you actually forget your expensive items or deliberately left them on purpose in the shop? You want to blame the owner for the thief stealing his stuff? Maybe women should not wear provocative clothes outside because using your logic, she is tempting someone to grope her or even worse, grape her!! If I own an every expensive car and I park it outside my house but it gets stolen. Using your logic, that is my fault for having nice things which temp people to steal!! I guess that's why you cannot have nice things!! Seems to me that you like to victim blame which is quite sad. There would be no thieves if they all just minded their own business and left everyone else stuff alone!

@stevenburns704
Questions: Did anybody challenge you when you went back to collect your things, assuming that due to the time lapse there would have been different people in the vicinity ? Would they think that you were stealing the items ? Is it a concern that nobody did ?

@ssrae-2229
there are millions of people in the cities everyday... people are busy with their OWN Lives... and will not disturb what other people does - westerners or tourists are no difference .. once you are inside China .you are treated as everyone else.. with respect and understanding ( same as in major capital city in Asia like Tokyo Seoul Singapore ))

Living in a densely populated area teaches people to mind their own business. So they seem rather cold.

There will be no doubt, because there are only two kinds of people who take things, one is their own and the other is a thief. But in China’s current big cities, citizens do not believe that there are such stupid thieves stealing things. This is the current situation in big cities, because if you steal things, the police will find you quickly. The value of an Apple computer, you may go to jail for several months. The cost of crime in China is too high. There are cameras everywhere, and there is no hiding place in big cities. Why are there so many thieves in Europe? The main reason is that the cost of crime is low and the police are inactive.

It does not take a sharp mind to sense a thief and a rightful owner.
Sometimes cover tells a book.

@kl9518
When I drive to London Heathrow airport, They steal £12.50 when I exit the motorway..
Then they steal £6 when I drop someone off at the airport.
They steal another £15 when I drive into central London.

@lovingmybaby9530
Yes, but that translates to "Legalised Theft" where you are "kind of" using a paid service. However, when you give away (paid sounds too much like you agreed to when you didn't) tax on your salary, then buy something like a family home that is taxed again in various forms such as yearly Property tax on a house -you own-, income tax when the company already paid the taxes, inheritance tax when the house has been paid for already and is being passed to family with all these taxes taken without representation, which again, is illegal. The fact that most in the Western world work approximately 3, 4, 5, or even 6 months for the government in the form of what they take out in taxes, then expect you not only to survive but to support kids, house, car, holidays, savings which are again all taxed, is a GD joke!!

@masonyan897

I am Chinese and I live in the US now. I went to college in Shanghai, so I have some personal experience. In Chinese colleges, there's a behavior called 占座, which means you occupy the seat so others cannot take it. Usually, people leave their belongings on the desk or table to occupy. This happens everywhere on campus. Students will leave their books on the classroom table to get the first-row seats. They will leave their bags on the seat in the cafeteria when they arrive and go order at the window so they do not have to look for seats with food in hand. Also, library seats are limited compared to the number of students on campus, so people leave their belongings on the desk, sometimes just to go back to the dorm to take a nap. Of course, these behaviors are not encouraged; a lot of people do it, and a lot of people, including me, hate it. One thing in common for these two groups of people is that neither of them is worried that they might lose their belongings. There was one time when my umbrella was taken by someone; umbrellas are usually left outside of the library building to keep the floor dry, which is a good idea. But during peak hours, there are hundreds of umbrellas at the building gate, and someone must have taken it. One other time, I lost my AirPods, and I thought I left them in the cafeteria, but they were nowhere to be found. I reached out to 保卫处, the security department, and they checked the surveillance feed and confirmed that I did not leave them in the cafeteria. I thought they were just trying to close the case at first, but they were able to tell me I left the building holding a girl's hand.

This is just a glimpse of what it's like. Hope it helps.

Oh, now in the US, I was in the Seattle public library once, and I went to the restroom, leaving my laptop on the desk. I saw a guy in the library talking to himself with a red face, shaving his head. I grabbed my stuff and ran straight back home.
