But currently, the overreliance on driving makes the first four completely unfeasible in a majority of American cities for a majority of trips.

If they exist at all they're not good enough to be a good alternative to driving for most people. For me freedom is having the choice if I want to drive or not. The freedom not to have to drive, not depending on having a car. Using public transport sometimes or on a regular basis does NOT mean that you can't have and use a car as well. Most people here have / use both

I live in East Tennessee. I have nearly my entire life. I don’t like driving. It’s an inconvenient necessity. I work from home, but when I do need to go out I don’t even have a sidewalk or a bike lane. There is no public transit within walking distance. It’s a massive problem.

A super easy way to tell that car-dependency is not the "free market" is the existence of "parking minimums". Parking minimums are city laws which force businesses, offices, and homes to build a certain number of parking spaces for something like every 100 sq ft or one bedroom. If the free market desired more car parking, there wouldn't need to be laws which mandate them. Same thing with suburban sprawl. Cities have development laws that ban every type of development pattern except suburban sprawl. It's not the people's preferences, necessarily, it's the law. It's way past time to get rid of these laws and let people choose the way they wish to live.

Honestly, after living abroad for two years in an area with incredibly efficient, safe, affordable public transportation, I’ve been making an escape plan to leave the US again. People in the US scream freedom!!!!!! But there is nothing more free than not having a car payment and getting where I need to go by foot/public transit. I could even get to small seaside villages for $2.00 on the bus. Freedom is a joke in America because we all are forced into debt just like being forced to get a car loan, insurance, maintenance, gas, etc just to literally survive here. $12,000 a year of car ownership is 1/3 to 1/2 of many people's entire paychecks. It's all so rigged in favor of big banks and corporations here in the US with no thought to the best policies for its citizens.

I can walk most places, take the train and metro to different neighborhoods and cities, and lastly I have a scooter that takes me everywhere I need to go! One of the main reasons why residential units in Manhattan are so costly is that its near public transit. So unless you can cough up so much money for rent or to buy, you are just going to end up living further away as the price becomes affordable to you. No, units and homes in outer boroughs aren't cheap or affordable either but is still much less than Manhattan. Public transit in these areas can be sparse and sometimes, untimely and have long commute time. People are going to end up with cars as public transit options aren't conducive to everyday life. Until Manhattan real estate prices go down, this problem would only expand. And there's no way prices will go down to an affordable level. It's FAR too late

Driving is usually the slowest door to door transport option in London. Traffic is slow and parking hard to find. Can not compete with Bus/Tube/Trains or bikes for time. Still has the advantage of isolation but can also be stressful. Most everyone has a car in my area but almost no one would drive to work and our local shops are 2 minutes walk from home. It's only for lager shopping trips or weekends out of London cars are used for. I use mine 3 or 4 times a month. The poorer you are, the more likely you will need to use a car more as you will be priced out of areas with good public transport.

European cities have suburbs too, but they are much more livable than US ones. You have supermarkets, mom and pop shops, bakeries and so on. Like little villages. In the US businesses are not allowed in suburbs, so the people have to drive far away when they suddenly find out, that they haven't enough sugar to bake a cake.

I had a job 10 years ago here in Utah. To get to the job I would walk to the nearby bus stop and wait. The bus came every half hour so I would need to arrive 2-3 minutes early to make sure I was there on time. It took about 5 minutes to walk to. Then it would drive me south to the transit center for 15 minutes where I would wait another 10-15 minutes for the bus to transfer to. That bus would pick me up and drive 20 minutes west where I would get out and walk another 15 minutes to my job.
Or, I could drive there in 18 minutes.

I live in NYC, I have never owned a car (I saved tons of money and time), I ride a Citi bike everywhere and occasionally ride the subway or bus. If I ever move somewhere else in the United States I will specifically look into places with reliable public transit and separated bike lines. I lived car-free in LA for two years. It was challenging but possible. If I was able to do it in LA I definitely can live car free in Phila, Chicago, Boston, SF, maybe Seattle and Minneapolis.

This answers my question on why the US doesnt have high speed trains that could connect Chicago to NY which would hypothetically get you there in 30mins to 1hr. Imagine the economic impact that would make. Jobs would be more competitive. States would have to compete for workers and to attract talent in their state. People wont feel stuck in a state. I live in a sunbelt state in a city of about 80k. Im also a Strong Towns member (look it up). There is no way we can or will do away with cars, nor should we have to. But we cannot allow cars to 100% dominate the landscape. My surroundings are almost entirely single family subdivisions and driving is how we conduct most of our daily travels. However, within 1 mile of my house (about 5 mins on a bike) there are multiple strip malls with restaurants, grocery, a water park, schools, and many other amenities. This area could and should function as a village center and should be pleasant and inviting for people to walk or bike to. Instead, the design makes no effort to be anything other than highways, parking lots and strip malls. This is bad planning that has a negative effect on quality of life. The incremental cost of these areas being connected with bike paths and pedestrian friendly modifications is very small compared to what could be gained in value, economic activity, and again quality of life if we had options! Instead, everyone drives. Biking and walking is something you pay thousands of dollars to do on vacation!

For example, in my area, the bus that runs nearby doesn't run much past 7 at night, and it doesn't run at all on Sundays. Before the route and schedule changes, I could and did use it for events downtown; in fact, I had a 10 trip ticket in my wallet for that purpose. Now? I tossed the 10 trip ticket, as the bus is no longer an option for me.

I live in a city with comprehensive public transportation in Asia, have freedom to choose to go anywhere by car, taxi, bus, mimibus, rail, metro, ferry, cycling and on foot. I spend on average USD$600-1200 on transportation annually. Really wander why no one take pubic transportation in north america.

You got to think that this is the greatest conspiracy in US history - more roads means more cars, means more gas used, more bucks for the oil companies. No incentive for State and federal Govts to build better public transportation or make cities more liveable without dependency on the automobile.

Its interesting reading the comments on these videos because there's always a population of people that get offended by the video and think its a personal attack if they perfer driving. For the most part we can agree that driving is the predominant mode of transportation in the USA. There are a certain population that can't drive, own a car or want to reduce the miles they drive. Just having that option is what people desire. If you want to drive you can drive. That isnt going anywhere especially in the USA.

Many factors come into play when deciding whether or not to own a car. If living in a dense city, there might be more cons to owning a car than pros. I live in Utah, so its more spaced out to get your necessities. Like groceries or to work. But its nice to have that freedom to drive to a campground, hiking trail, or fishing spot about an hour away for the weekend.

The most important reason cars are king summed up in one word - Freedom. I can go where I want, when I want. Try carrying home a weeks groceries on the bus - I usually fill my trunk. I can stop on the way home and do errands conveniently. There are so many pluses that the minuses just don't count. Check out LA - they have spent billions on public transit, and it is vastly underused - the only people that use it are mainly those who can't afford a car.

I don't mind suburbs or cars. What I mind is that I can't live anywhere except the suburbs and I can't get anywhere except using a car. We should have the freedom to choose where to live and how we want to travel. You may not like living in the city, fine. But other people do. Walkable neighbourhoods are in demand. And people shouldn't have to sell an arm or a leg just to live in one.

For anyone who wants to learn more about the high price we pay for automobile dependency, I highly recommend Citynerd, City Beautiful, and Not Just BIkes, on Youtube. There are so many reasons we should be making our cities more bikable and encouraging more people to use public transit. Congestion pricing, like they recently enacted in New York City, is a start, but we should also do zoning reform to allow for higher density, mixed use, walkable neighborhoods.

Growing up in America you basically dont get to participate in society until youre 16 and thats if your parents can afford extra cars. Its pretty ridiculous quite frankly. Parents are quick to ridicule their kids for spending too much time inside but they cant really go anywhere on their own.

I've never been mugged by a fellow passenger in my own car. No one has ever shot heroin or overdosed in my car. Homeless people have never peed on the floor of my car while I'm driving to work. Etc. I love taking public transport in Asia, where it's clean and safe. Every time I have to use it in America, I regret it. It's an awful experience. Maybe fix that before chastising people for wanting to avoid it.

Europe is very condensed and most countires in there are very small hance why it's much easier to make public trans and everything is much closer. US is huge compared to European countries and everything is more spread out. Walking friendly cities will still take you forever to get somewhere because again everything is more spread out. What we really need is high speed rail infrastructure the likes of Japan, but because of so many people have ownership of the land and don't want to give it up makes this project very challenging because lots of rail lines would have to go through private lands etc...including other reasons

To be fair, America is huge; this country is the larger than many European countries combined. Many neighborhoods are relatively far away from work places (unless its a huge city or a small town). Having to travel a distance thatd take 30 minutes by car is saving more time than other such modes of transportation. We also have really weird weather; we can experience extreme heats and deadly colds. In short, there are a lot of reasons we drive a lot and given that the price of gas is unstable, just driving for fun isnt the only reason we do it.

I am a car enthusiast but I think America only likes designing cities for cars, not people. My school is relatively close to me but I still can't walk or bike to school because the sidewalk can randomly end and the city is terrible at designing bike lanes. I hate that when you mention "bike lane" to an older person they will immediately think its a bad idea.

Public transit is slower because it is stuck in the same terrible traffic as all the cars are. If it had priority lanes it could be faster but people would freak out if a lane was taken away for transit users.

I cant ride my bicycle to work because sidewalks abruptly end. The public library doesn't have sidewalks to get to it. Theres also this hilarious crosswalk where I work that has no sidewalks connected to either side. Why is America at war with walking/bicycling?

I tried the public transit alternative for a while. Among constant delays, drug use inside transit, inconsistency and crowded buses, I gave up when a guy was trying to slash people with a Katana inside transit. Ill spend extra and drive if it means I get home unsliced.

There is no conspiracy in it. The simple truth is that people want to stay in their private space and want less interaction with other humans as much as possible. That's how humans are made. China has a good public transportation system, but their cities are also becoming car centric as their EV industry is booming, so the truth is that Chinese people were commuting in public transportation not because they wanted but because they had no choice
