The financial advisors all sold the same product. The CPA gave me useful advice. The financial advisor I hired was me. Because when it comes right down to it, the only person who is trustworthy and free is you. You can work on getting good.

Lately I have worked on improving my skills on executing stocks options and so far it’s helping me good creating a secondary source of passive income. Shortly before I retired, most of my savings were in a 401k plan (I also had an ESOP from which I would get some money, and my wife had a 401k plan with her employer) It was a chunk of money but certainly nothing overwhelming. I did know that all the large banks (like Chase, Bank of America, Wells-Fargo) have Financial Advising services. I asked among my friends and family and eventually went to one of those services. My wife and I opened our account at the bank in 2007 and I am very pleased with how they have done. I rather expected that the nest egg invested would double every ten years if I didn’t take anything out. I am pleased to tell you that our savings have increased at a proportion that is considerably higher than that! (…and we have taken some money out for home projects). They also provide us with very good advice in regard to our mortgage and outside investments. I can tell you that I have absolutely no concerns about our finances and I am certain there will be enough to add to our childrens’ nest eggs when we are both dead.

Also, she helped recommend life insurance / disability options and suggested we look into filing taxes differently for extra savings. With your NW of $150K, $500 would be 0.33% of that to spend on an advisor. If you feel you have a handle on things, you could wait until that number is higher (and the expenses is a smaller %), or it doesn't seem super unreasonable to spend 0.33% for a checkup every couple years.

I have my own processes to determine that - but the first open ended question I ask them is what their thoughts on Bitcoin are.
