MacArthur had never done well in DEFENSE. Look up Corregidor. He knew amphibious assault, which he replicated in Inchon. So when the Chinese attacked in COT 1950, his solution was to vacate the core of the ROK govt and the military to Japan, and attempt a new invasion of the peninsula, times with an amphibious invasion of China by the Nationalists out of Taiwan. This is what got him fired. He would have abandoned the peninsula, recreating Dunkirk, or in his case, Corregidor and Bataan. He would have left MG Dean in the prison camp in the process. GEN Ridgeway stopped the Chinese at Chipyongni, proving MacArthur's "strategy" of retreat wrong.

Walker was an excellent commander, even though he was working in a very resource limited environment with mostly unprepared troops, he was doing well.

He had two huge problems though.

Walker was not one of the “MacArthur people”. He had spent WWII in the ETO and was not trusted or admitted to the inner circle. This would cost Walker and Eighth Army when the CCF entered the war. The intelligence from MacArthurs headquarters was erasing much of the evidence of CCF presence and sending Walker rosy pictures of no CCF presence. You had walker getting intel from his people in North Korea that they are taking Chinese prisoners and whatnot, and higher headquarters claiming it’s just a few small volunteer deserters and no threat.

His other problem was that MacArthur maintained his own, separate force in North Korea, X Corps. This violates the unity of command principal in so many ways, and is a recipe for the disaster that happened.

The real problem in Korea 1950 was that MacArthur was in command. I think that any random general would have done better in his spot, and he couldn’t have been relieved soon enough. Walker himself would have made an excellent theater commander, if only they had handed him over X Corps. Walker would have done just fine without MacArthur. MacArthur wasn’t going to do fine with anyone, he was way past his capable prime and should have been force retired in 1933.

We did win the war. North Korea invaded South Korea. The United Nations intervened, the voted being taken on the one day the Soviets are absent. The American forces destroyed the North Korean army. The Allied forces reached the Yalu River and controlled all fo Korea. The Chinese intervened and pushed the UN forces back to near the 38th parallel. The long and twisted path to a peace began. I remember as a young boy watching the news on tv concerning the war and seeing film of it. We won. South Korea is a democratic, prosperous nation today thanks to their own valor and to the willingness of other nations to preserve their independence. Here there was no Munich.

The first reason for not using nukes against the Chinese was that the Soviets already had atomic bombs. If we had used them, the Soviets would have probably responded in kind, resulting in WWIII.

The other reason was that President Truman wanted to contain the war to the Korean peninsula. Dropping nukes, especially on the Chinese side of the Yalu, risked broadening the war. Taiwan might of gotten involved in Korea leading to a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, or the Soviets might have interened, which could have led to nuclear exchange between the U. S. and the Soviet unx, or fighting between U. S. and Soviet forces in Europe. This would have also resulted in WWIII.

China had meant what it had said when it warned that it would not allow the US to do away with the DPRK, and China was determined that it would act to preserve a protective buffer against the "US puppet" in South Korea. At that time, the US was still having difficulty balancing its worldview and foreign policy, and had trouble understanding Chinese perceptions and obxtives and greatly underestimated China's capabilities. Nevertheless, the US government policy was not to start another world war, especially over Korea.

If that had happened, the U.S. would have either won big or lost big. Perhaps, taking China back into nationalist hands. Either way, it would have been hugely costly in terms of lives and money.

MacArthur was quite serious about expanding the theater of war into China. He not only considered nuclear option for northern China, but KMT army in Taiwan was also ready to be mobilized. In fact, there were many civilian volunteer soldiers from the KMT army from Taiwan. They provided invaluable intelligence on Mainland army and also interrogated PRC prisoners on behalf of the allies.
