Frankly speaking, until Nixon visited China in 1972, China was a black hole to us in south east Asia. No news, no tourism, all we know was there were a lot of poor hungry , like a billion of them, people. They were ready to go to war in Korea and Vietnam or anywhere. China to us was only Taiwan and Hong Kong. Fear and loathe of China would be the correct word.
China was, and is extremely fortunate they have wise leadership to steer the political landscape to make what China is today - an economic powerhouse and potential superpower.
