20 years ago when I was a kid, China was still quite poor. Back then, McDonald's was a huge luxury. My parents would only take me there as a reward if I ranked in the top 10 in my exams. That one meal would keep me happy for days. Starbucks? I didn't even dare to dream about that.
But now, McDonald's is just cheap fast food, and I can grab a Starbucks whenever I want. We even have Chinese brands opening stores in the US now. Honestly, this is something I never could have predicted 20 years ago.

For decades, it has been considered normal for thousands of American companies to operate and generate huge profits in China. Yet, if a Chinese company attempts to enter the American market, the media erupts and systematically portrays it as a threat. This reflects an unhealthy supremacist mentality that rejects any form of fairness. Always double standard!
@M4NA5
Rising inflation and cost of living has reduced the amount most people are willing to pay for a cup of coffee , and with the rise in mobile ordering, the Starbucks' special experience (and hence brand equity) you got before is no longer relevant. This can largely be applied to QSRs who're all seeing declining revenues while small, niche stores who're offering reasonably priced food are thriving.

Fun fact: the Chinese market is the most important for many American franchises. KFC (8 billion revenue in China vs 3 billion in USA), Wynn Resorts / Las Vegas Sands in Macau (1 billion, vs 600 million in USA) , etc.
American chains are all over China. Pizza Hut, KFC, Starbucks, Mcdonalds, Burger King, Costco, Walmart, just to name a few. In fact the they are better quality there than in the states.

anyone who had starbucks coffee had the experience already, now is to find different taste and greater value, LuckIn came from China, LuckIn can get the best prices on cups to sugar and machinery. LuckIn is the new blood, as in BYD attacking the old Mercedes Brand. Go with the flow, adapt to changes, or die as a dinosaur
@mpuffeng
It's because US companies refuse to lower prices. China sees this and sees a clear opportunity. It really isn't hard to win over our market. Also, Starbucks ordered RTO - so if a Luckin appears in my area I will support it every day and tell everyone I can about how great it is. Also the only people afraid of China are the 1% - China largely benefits you as a consumer overall. Funny how capitalists are so afraid of competition :)
@toulor3403
Lukin is drown out your competition, lie about your sales. When there is no competition left, they have a monopoly and thus profit.
If competition hold out over 10-15 years....liking is bankrupt and all investors lose. Risky business model vs a profitable market leader.
@superphi
Who cares if they do too good, just say national security and force a sale to an American company, problem solved. This is y America should get BYD to build manufacturing in America, if it does so good then bam national security and now u got a good EV company

Crappy US companies not being able to compete with foreign competition that still give a crap about customers, and sometimes even employee rights (be it Chinese, german or other companies).. who would have guessed. But i can assure you of one thing. They will complain about it and will demand protections of their poor poor profits from this free market.. which they'll price to no ends, if they are the ones raking in the profits through predatory and exploitative tactics illegal in most of the civilized world. The US in a nutshell.
@Chano601
The USA don't invest into Americans, just foreigners. They only invest 2-3% of Hispanics the most hardest working cultural in USA. This Why America is fell behind! They don't invest into Americans like China Invest into their people.
@Jhondoe29
It's what people call "free market". China is also crowed with American brands and as far as I know, the Chinese people love them. I think that today the Americans are way more suspicious and anger towards China that they do about U.S. they genuinely love to buy and spread American culture, but Americans don't. It's a bubble that they've been living.

It's like Americans buying Russian products during the cold war.
China will destroy American society.
The micro dramas are designed to reduce the attention span of the viewer which translates to an inability for a person to get used to "seeing the whole picture" that a 2 hour long movie or a book does.
@dradenhaven1549
The real story isn't distillation killing OpenAI's moat, it's that export controls backfired. We tried to starve China of compute, and instead forced them to innovate on efficiency. Now they're deploying 'good enough' reasoning into factory robots while we're still debating chatbot pricing. The race isn't for the smartest model. It's for who anchors intelligence to physical value first.
@MrDnong
we are very happy whit NIKE, McDonalds, Starbucks, cocacola, Microsoft, Autodesk and lots of other things, even Youtube, they are quite nomal in everyday life in China. what is the big deal with Chinese product apearing in America. we still do sell and buy to each other, don't we? btw, we speak English, too. no one would think that China will be taken.

Ordinary Americans should welcome them with open arms because they may help to lower their cost of living. But greedy capitalist elite there may feel threatened and could lobby for nationwide ban using various pretexts.

There are more than twice as many KFC's in China as there are in the US.
Buick sells 4x as many cars in China as it does in the US.
Most Americans do not know these easily verifiable facts, because Trump says that US companies are shut-out of the Chinese market ... and the US media don't challenge him when he lies!
@emmawang1999
America is an open society with a closed mind. America is ruled by the big money. The big money does not like competition. It wants monopolistic price power. This is the real reason why everything is so expensive in America. Just take a look. America is roughly dominated by ten super big companies. China is different. Competition is fierce. China warmly welcomes foreign companies to do business there. For example, To lure Tesla, China offered the company low interest loan and tax breaks.
@ThreeHundredParrortArmy
Starbucks being a premium is such a joke. Most of their drinks are made with flavored syrups not the actual thing. They have some audacity to say that their prices are justified for the same price you can get good coffee from an actual coffeehouse not some cooperation that tries to hide that it's one of the best poster childs of gentrification mediocrely.

@troll-nj2by
These people did zero research on what distilling actually is. Distilling only works if you have the full output of a model's output alongside the prompt that generated it, then you feed it to the model. Distilling also requires a large comprehensive dataset of outputs and prompts, which is impossible if you don't have the model running locally in your own system. This is not possible with open AI models, beacause open AI does not reveal the full output. The process of Deepseek training is far more complex than what they laid out to be, there is first pre training, then fine tuning and a new method to make the model reason using GRPO. That sounds a lot more complex than what they said, well that's because that story wouldn't sell, the narriative that they "distilled" all of the outputs does sell. The reason why google was able to distill their models, is because they used their own model to distill knowledge on smaller models, because they had the model in their system, allowing them to generate full outputs creating a comprehensive dataset that they could use to distill other models.

Luckin coffee is really good though even if its more expensive than starbucks i would still buy luckinm their coffee is just really good
@LingOfEarth
Luckin is currently a net positive to the us GDP at the moment. They're leasing us land, hiring us workers, buying us materials. They're a prime example of FDI "Foreign Direct Investment". During their expansion phase, this benefits us. It's not until years later when they begin massive amounts of repatriation of profits, or if starbucks close locations because of them, these scenarios is where it hurts our GDP. This doesn't mean they're taking over.

China’s growing presence in sectors like coffee retail, digital entertainment and artificial intelligence is more than a market dispute. It exposes how innovation flourishes when there is investment, public planning and a willingness to challenge the status quo. While some in the US frx this movement as a threat, a progressive lens reminds us that technological and cultural advances should not be monopolized by a few corporations. The real question is how we can ensure that global competition results in fairer access, lower costs and technologies that serve people rather than concentrating power.

@toulor3403
Lukin is drown out your competition, lie about your sales. When there is no competition left, they have a monopoly and thus profit.
If competition hold out over 10-15 years....liking is bankrupt and all investors lose. Risky business model vs a profitable market leader.
@superphi
Who cares if they do too good, just say national security and force a sale to an American company, problem solved. This is y America should get BYD to build manufacturing in America, if it does so good then bam national security and now u got a good EV company
@powasjington4262
China is actually doing well at this now. In the past they were able to make a lot of things but struggling with branding and putting out their own companies and products but now it seemed like they are beginning to do that and people are starting to want the Chinese brands.
@danstenis660
The oligarchs are hollowing out businesses and leaving the economy in shamble, which causes the USA government to ask China to bail them out from bankruptcy and now you folks are wondering why China has to own our businesses so we can keep the economy running?
@Yamyatos
@Chano601
The USA don't invest into Americans, just foreigners. They only invest 2-3% of Hispanics the most hardest working cultural in USA. This Why America is fell behind! They don't invest into Americans like China Invest into their people.
@Jhondoe29
It's what people call "free market". China is also crowed with American brands and as far as I know, the Chinese people love them. I think that today the Americans are way more suspicious and anger towards China that they do about U.S. they genuinely love to buy and spread American culture, but Americans don't. It's a bubble that they've been living.
@fitsol6431
The US stopped developing its infrastructure, building amazing structures, peace, and safety like China did for there ppl now China engineering safety transport has passed the US. The government, who built the first roads, trains, and safety, will build the future. The next thing is equal to smartphones might come out of China because they are living in a futuristic work to think ahead.
@CK-jo9im
It doesn't take an educated person to understand that competition is good for a consumer. Is this program by CNBC not sponsored by Starbucks?
@Sinecure0001-s4s
It's like Americans buying Russian products during the cold war.
China will destroy American society.
The micro dramas are designed to reduce the attention span of the viewer which translates to an inability for a person to get used to "seeing the whole picture" that a 2 hour long movie or a book does.
@dradenhaven1549
@MrDnong
we are very happy whit NIKE, McDonalds, Starbucks, cocacola, Microsoft, Autodesk and lots of other things, even Youtube, they are quite nomal in everyday life in China. what is the big deal with Chinese product apearing in America. we still do sell and buy to each other, don't we? btw, we speak English, too. no one would think that China will be taken.
@maxdc988
Ordinary Americans should welcome them with open arms because they may help to lower their cost of living. But greedy capitalist elite there may feel threatened and could lobby for nationwide ban using various pretexts.
@leahcasey2678
@emmawang1999
@ThreeHundredParrortArmy
@johnbethea4505
Some people don't have the time to get involved in a long program because they have work to do. Remember you must not waste time when you can make money or run your business.
@troll-nj2by
These people did zero research on what distilling actually is.
@sixtogonzaga655
Luckin coffee is really good though even if its more expensive than starbucks i would still buy luckinm their coffee is just really good
@LingOfEarth
@DeViL-g2q
My advice is that please let the competetion grow so you americans can have some cheap things from premium brands so to say
@hgbgakdflndbz6921
This happened to me in China. I scanned the code at Luckin but it was glitching. The employee couldn't help and said there was no other way to order. He was running a marathon behind the counter the entire time. Actually I ordered from Cotti coffee everyday because it's even cheaper than Luckin
@POVcast-e9z
@Hong-b8q1o
When new US companies landed in China, Chinese open their arms getting excited, like Walmart, like Costco....When Chinese business opens in US, threat, threat threat lol Oh, mighty America, grow some confidence please!

The Coconut latte is "not so sweet"? Holy crap that thing is a sugar bomb, just how much sugar are Americans eating so they are this numb to it?
@containedhurricane
People are still being fooled by the sweet taste of their coffees. If you want to know the real taste of coffee, drink the thick one without sugar, sweeteners and milk
@Mc_hansdaniel
Very good, becouse the quality and more delicious than US
@oppzehaozhang
When they can't compete, they claim there are "national security" issues, then spread panic among the public. In the end, only the American lower class loses; the upper class doesn't care about your healthcare or whether you can eat well. This is the American way of life.
@edringweeko3419
5 shops and they are making the all documentary about it man these people sometimes!! How many American companies that are in China
@peace8373
Retail is becoming a cold experience. You order on-line, you no longer know what a true price is. You walk into the store, handed your order, it is like a modern automat. No longer an experience, just a place to spend your money on a fancy drink. Me, I wake up make an espresso at my place before I leave for work.
@YTAlchemicMedia
I last paid $9 for a coffee at Starbucks 2 years ago, i haven't been back since. it comes down to PRICE.
@mrcookies409
What I don't understand is if OpenAI is so good at training models in the first place, why aren't they also good at distilling them?
@frankm6218
Starbucks is in China for 30-40 years, so American companies took over China? What a dumb title.
