I became famous for fifteen minutes for this case. An older lady had a lap dog that bit a little girl. This was the late 80’s and rabies treatment was pretty drastic and dangerous for children. So animal welfare wanted to take the dog into custody to watch for signs of rabies to save the girl from undergoing the tests. Anyway, in the 70’s when the treatment was even more dangerous if a dog bit someone, they used to get a piece of the dog’s brain tissue to look for a sign of rabies. Obviously, this killed the dog. Well this lady hid her dog with friends out of town because she thought her dog would be killed, she still thought that it was the 70’s treatment for dogs, and she wouldn't listen to anyone.
The little girl had to get the dangerous treatment. The lady was charged with something like endangering a minor. I was a Probation and Parole officer and was ordered to do a pre-sentence investigation. This case made the local Richmond Virginia Times Dispatch as a front page story for days. After her sentencing hearing, the defense attorney leaked the pre-sentence report to a reporter, and she pulled quotes from the twelve page report out of context that made look like I supported the lady that hid her dog. My fifteen minutes of fame was people calling me, and yelling at me asking how I could support such a vile woman! Being famous is always fun!

Not exactly a crime story, but back in the day when I studied criminal justice, I used to write lesser known serial killers and I was talking to one about a horrible incident that had happened to me in the week and a half prior thus my not writing (being frazzled, I was on a jog and had my headphones in and 4 men and a driver threatened me and tried to grab me and jerk me into their work van.)
He actually told me I needed to be careful and change up my routine if that was my normal walking/jogging route because there was a woman he was never caught for…(true or not I don’t know, he was only charged with 2 but confessed to over 14)
In his letter after I told him what transpired and me having to get away and run through the woods and back to my complex, he said a. that wasn't the safest option but at least I got off the road, but b. remember what he said about routine b/c one woman he “got” went walking/jogging regularly and he could tell by the color of what she was wearing (from stalking I guess) If it was a yellow day she’d do a sprint, pink running, red jogging, green was “laundry day” he knew she was on her cycle if she wore brown or black colors and mainly just walk. Never said he went through her trash or anything but it was like okay… you did seriously watch this person. ALOT. and knew when her friend would run with her or what color meant she’d have her walkman in.
Sad thing was, he was sometimes known for exaggerations and tall tales. So I’ll never know if it was true or not. I looked up missing persons in that area that fit his ideal for years and never found anyone that fit the profile.

The tale of Israel Keyes. I remember reading about his last crime not long after meeting my dear friend Hummingbird Val. She shocked me by informing me her older sister had dated Israel Keyes' brother, and that the Amish in nearby Smyrna had welcomed members of the Keyes family into their community, and some still reside there, as Amish.
I have a keen interest in forensics, particularly the application of entomological evidence to tough cases. So I read about crimes, and found his especially calculating and predatory.
Israel Keyes is believed to have committed multiple kidnappings and killings across the country between 2001 and March 2012. The FBI is seeking assistance in developing more information about his travels to identify additional victims. Anyone with information concerning Keyes is encouraged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.

After Israel Keyes was arrested for the killing of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig in Alaska in 2012, authorities realized that the man they had in custody was a prolific serial killer. Keyes freely admitted as much.
During conversations with investigators, the 34-year-old sometime construction worker revealed the names of two additional victims—along with tantalizing clues about other killings he had committed around the country over a period of years. But last December, Keyes killed himself in his Anchorage jail cell, leaving a trail of unanswered questions and unidentified victims.
Those victims have not been forgotten, however. Today we are releasing new information in the hopes that the public can help us identify others killed by Keyes’ hands. The information includes extensive videotaped conversations with Keyes in jail and an interactive map that contains a detailed timeline of his known movements beginning in 1997.
“He gave us a number of clues,” said Special Agent Jolene Goeden in our Anchorage Division. “He talked openly about some of the homicides, but much of what he said only hinted at the things he had done. So we are trying to get information out there about what he did tell us. We are letting the public know the types of cars he rented, towns he visited, campgrounds he frequented. Anything that might spur someone’s memory could help us,” Goeden said.
Apart from Koenig, who was abducted from the Anchorage coffee stand where she worked, and Bill and Lorraine Currier, a middle-aged married couple who were killed in 2011 in Vermont, Keyes discussed “seven or eight other victims,” Goeden said. “We want to identify them.”
Investigators believe that Keyes killed and buried a victim in upstate New York in April 2009. “He also told us about a couple in Washington state, another victim in that area, and possibly others in surrounding states,” Goeden said.
FBI agents are working with law enforcement around the country to lix Keyes to open cases. “If we have a missing person identified in a particular area, we work closely with that local police department to either connect the person to Keyes or not,” Goeden explained. “We have his DNA.”
It’s a painstaking process, made more complicated because Keyes was meticulous about covering his tracks. In the Currier case, for example, he flew from Alaska to Chicago, rented a car, and drove 1,000 miles to Vermont, where he searched for victims. He chose the Curriers at random.
Keyes also left “kill kits” in various locations around the country that contained, among other items, weapons and cash—the money came from bank robberies he committed to support his criminal activities. The caches provided further cover because Keyes didn’t have to risk boarding an airplane with a weapon or using credit cards that could later connect him to a crime in a particular area.
“Although he chose many of his victims randomly, a tremendous amount of planning went into these crimes,” Goeden said. “Keyes enjoyed what he did, and he had no remorse at all. He told us if he hadn’t been caught, he would have continued kidnapping and killing people.”
We need your help. If the videos or map regarding Israel Keyes’ movements spark any memories, or if you have any information regarding Keyes, please contact your local FBI office or submit a tip online.
“That fact that Keyes is dead makes it more difficult for us,” Goeden said, “but the investigation absolutely continues.”

I grew up 2 miles from John Wayne Gacy. He tried to pick us up when I was 13. We all knew of him and he had recently been questioned about missing teens. Needless to say I'm here today because I didn't take his ride. But being in the community he was in was pretty creepy just knowing we saw him regularly. He was always at events and parades. He was arrested a year or so later and that's when they found all the bodies.
