I am so grateful for your historical background of period dramas. I teach Chinese history at the college level in the US but also find this tumultuous time quite daunting to present to students. I cover the Khitans etc as part of the history of the Manchurian region and peoples. Western scholars who cover it are limited. Valerie Hansen has an excellent book on it (The Open Empire) which examines Chinese history beyond the standard dynastic approach to include times like the 5 Dynasties, etc. when borders were porous and administrations constantly shifting. I’m so excited that there is a CDrama that I can recommend to students that attempts to cover these times. Thank you so much for the coverage. Please keep it up as the series proceeds!

one more interesting thing to add on ,the king of wu yue has the surname qian,he has many very famous descendent who live in the morden times,big names like qian xue sen,qian san qing,especially qian xuesen,he is the greatest rocket and missle scientist in China

Very informative summary of this drama. I've only watched 12 episodes but the scope of historical events is mindboggling as is the list of characters. Came for Bai Yu and didn't realize he was so 'young' at the start which now explains his innocence and rightousness. Looking forward to how he will impact the drama from now on. There are countless actors who are playing important roles throughout.

I've been obsessed with Where Winds Meet! Honestly started playing fully expected to drop it after a few weeks but here I am 400+ hours and entrenched with a good guild later. This drama is so timely, the game has definitely ignited my historical curiosity.

Has been waiting for a 5Dynasties10states period drama for so long, one of the darkest period of China history and the dawn of one of the best dynasty in Ancient China. If modern China is brave enough to face those periods one by one, it is the indicator of the overall power of modern China has came to a level that has no fear of any foreign power.

I had to see each episode thre times each with rewinds to understand . And I had ten years of learning Chinese as a second language because of my Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew. And I still have to watch many other YouTube channels like yours to understand 5D10K A Little more. And only saw 1 to 7 episodes only. But I have no regrets because I am learning more about Chinese history in the most enjoyable way.

I think it’s been a while since the last time I watch something like this. At first still figuring out the plot and the story. I go to mydramalist back and forth while watching, trying to remember who is who. No doubt in the acting since most of the veterans playing here, the story is intriguing

Actually, this is not the first Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms drama that was shown. Remember Chen Jianbin's Zhao Kuangyin not too long ago?
The problem is that the focus of the period drama was more on how Zhao rose through rank (I think the scxtwriter tried to hitch a hike here as Zhao's heroic stories were famous momento on many people mind) and the more famous poet king of Southern Tang, Li Yu who was played by Nicky Wu previously. Li's end was way more dramatic, by losing the war to Song and after Zhao Kuangyin's death, he lost his wife to the new emperor Zhao Kuangyi who raped her. When he composed a poetry about his grudges, he was forced to drink poison wine and died. Probably because all these dramatic stories, people forgot there are other southern kingdoms besides Southern Tang.

I am watching the drama, and although I am learning Chinese, where we learn a bit of history too, I was having some difficulty keeping up with all the (many) characters in the drama and their purposes and historical positions. This was extremely helpful!! I wouldn´t mind more videos relating the drama and characters to history ( not playing the game, but finding the images you showed really beautiful)

The Battle of Zhong Du Chiao (Mid-Crossing Bridge) happened during the 3rd (and final) military conflict between Late-jin and Khitan. The second Late-jin Emperor, Shi Chong Gui, renounced Khitan hegemony, which led to 3 Khitan invasions. Late-jin defeated the Khitans in the first 2 campaigns, almost capturing the Khitan Emperor during the second campaign. In the 3rd campaign, the commanding General of Late-jin armies (Shi Chong Gui's uncle in law), Du Chong Wei, turned traitor and made a secret deal with the Khitans. The Late-jin vanguard that fought in the Battle of Zhong Du Chiao were left out there to die and were cut down to a man. Du Chong Wei promptly surrendered his armies afterwards to the Khitans and left the Capital, Kaifen, wide open. Late-jin Dynasty ended soon after.

I watched 2 episodes, got confused and kept on hold & went back to continue dramas that I had already started. Finally caught up with Imp Cor. 2 and midway through SiP. This drama has so many characters, even after checking wikipedia about 5 dyn & 10 kingdoms, I am still not sure which character belongs to which country (Dyn. or Kin.). The uniforms of officials of the kingdoms are same which makes it even more difficult to different them. May be it is done to make it historically accurate but making them slightly diff would have been easier for international viewers to understand.
But finally after a long time I have found a drama that needs your 100% attention throughout or you'll miss something important.
我看了两集，觉得很困惑就先搁置了，回去继续看之前已经开始追的剧。终于赶完了《御赐小仵作2》，《长相思》也看了一半。

18:25 I recommend the channel GatesOfKilikien for those interested in geographical history of Chinese history, ie why certain regions and cities were in constant conflict and fought over and over throughout the centuries... why the capitals of Luoyang and Chang'an are situated where they are etc etc. They can be a little dry to watch but very informative.

Thank you for the summary. I have not started watching but already impressed by the production quality. I do not like long dramas and was first attracted because my favourite singer. I love the opening and closing songs. I read that the story line can be confusing because of the many characters and duration of the period. I will try to read about the history of that period before watching.

Thanks! Yes, it's confusing at first with so many characters and titles, but it's still captivating. It's baffling how Bai Yu goes from being such a bright teen to a young man who doesn't understand anything about the world around him, argues about everything, and needs constant assistance from a meddling "nanny" (Zhou Yu Tong). In these first 13 episodes, I don't feel any sympathy for either of those characters. Others, however, are super interesting, like Ni Da Hong: the actor commands the screen in every scene. Fantastic. I'm following this drama with great interest; it has substance, unlike some of the lighter dramas out there these days... kind regards from Argentina

Another addition. Feng Dao is one of the 40 most outstanding heroes of Chinese civilisation (from Han up to Song) that was immortalised in Wu Shuang Pu.
Another interesting observation. If you check the Hundred Family Surnames, you can see how influential Qian Hongchu is as his family name and those of his wives dominated the top of the list. Most probably because it was compiled by Jiangnan scholars, which was roughly from his own Wuyue region.

The drama is so good I could imagine how it felt living during the chaos, you weren’t safe if poor or very noble, you were prey to someone greedy… cannibalism was rife due to conscxtion of farmers into armies. You either fought in an army or fed them. scary times
It actually makes what happened to Tang Dynasty so heartbreaking, for a modern concept it’s like watching USA fall.

Hopefully the serial drama maintained the accuracy of the era as well, otherwise wrong costumes and weapons just as important. Yes , Wudai Shiguo should expanded not just on Later jin , Later Han, later zhou to Song dynasty... Wuyue is important since it was the longest of 10 kingdoms , but if the rest of the 9 kingdoms being added, it will be very interesting

I had to see each episode thre times each with rewinds to understand . And I had ten years of learning Chinese as a second language because of my Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew. And I still have to watch many other YouTube channels like yours to understand 5D10K A Little more. And only saw 1 to 7 episodes only. But I have no regrets because I am learning more about Chinese history in the most enjoyable way.

Actually, this is not the first Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms drama that was shown. Remember Chen Jianbin's Zhao Kuangyin not too long ago?
The problem is that the focus of the period drama was more on how Zhao rose through rank (I think the scxtwriter tried to hitch a hike here as Zhao's heroic stories were famous momento on many people mind) and the more famous poet king of Southern Tang, Li Yu who was played by Nicky Wu previously. Li's end was way more dramatic, by losing the war to Song and after Zhao Kuangyin's death, he lost his wife to the new emperor Zhao Kuangyi who raped her. When he composed a poetry about his grudges, he was forced to drink poison wine and died. Probably because all these dramatic stories, people forgot there are other southern kingdoms besides Southern Tang.

I am watching the drama, and although I am learning Chinese, where we learn a bit of history too, I was having some difficulty keeping up with all the (many) characters in the drama and their purposes and historical positions. The Battle of Zhong Du Chiao (Mid-Crossing Bridge) happened during the 3rd (and final) military conflict between Late-jin and Khitan. The second Late-jin Emperor, Shi Chong Gui, renounced Khitan hegemony, which led to 3 Khitan invasions. Late-jin defeated the Khitans in the first 2 campaigns, almost capturing the Khitan Emperor during the second campaign. In the 3rd campaign, the commanding General of Late-jin armies (Shi Chong Gui's uncle in law), Du Chong Wei, turned traitor and made a secret deal with the Khitans. The Late-jin vanguard that fought in the Battle of Zhong Du Chiao were left out there to die and were cut down to a man. Du Chong Wei promptly surrendered his armies afterwards to the Khitans and left the Capital, Kaifen, wide open. Late-jin Dynasty ended soon after.

I watched 2 episodes, got confused and kept on hold & went back to continue dramas that I had already started. Finally caught up with Imp Cor. 2 and midway through SiP. This drama has so many characters, even after checking wikipedia about 5 dyn & 10 kingdoms, I am still not sure which character belongs to which country (Dyn. or Kin.). The uniforms of officials of the kingdoms are same which makes it even more difficult to different them. May be it is done to make it historically accurate but making them slightly diff would have been easier for international viewers to understand.
But finally after a long time I have found a drama that needs your 100% attention throughout or you'll miss something important.

18:25 I recommend the channel GatesOfKilikien for those interested in geographical history of Chinese history, ie why certain regions and cities were in constant conflict and fought over and over throughout the centuries... why the capitals of Luoyang and Chang'an are situated where they are etc etc. They can be a little dry to watch but very informative.

I love the opening and closing songs. I read that the story line can be confusing because of the many characters and duration of the period. Thanks! Yes, it's confusing at first with so many characters and titles, but it's still captivating. It's baffling how Bai Yu goes from being such a bright teen to a young man who doesn't understand anything about the world around him, argues about everything, and needs constant assistance from a meddling "nanny" (Zhou Yu Tong). In these first 13 episodes, I don't feel any sympathy for either of those characters. Others, however, are super interesting, like Ni Da Hong: the actor commands the screen in every scene. Fantastic. I'm following this drama with great interest; it has substance, unlike some of the lighter dramas out there these days... kind regards from Argentina

Another addition. Feng Dao is one of the 40 most outstanding heroes of Chinese civilisation (from Han up to Song) that was immortalised in Wu Shuang Pu.
Another interesting observation. If you check the Hundred Family Surnames, you can see how influential Qian Hongchu is as his family name and those of his wives dominated the top of the list. Most probably because it was compiled by Jiangnan scholars, which was roughly from his own Wuyue region.

The drama is so good I could imagine how it felt living during the chaos, you weren’t safe if poor or very noble, you were prey to someone greedy… cannibalism was rife due to conscxtion of farmers into armies. You either fought in an army or fed them. scary times
It actually makes what happened to Tang Dynasty so heartbreaking, for a modern concept it’s like watching USA fall.
