Hi everyone. So, I am Ukrainian but my boyfriend is Chinese. We've met and started dating when he was studying here and have been in a long-distance relationship after he graduated and moved back to China. Ukraine is not very safe right now and does not have good job prospects for electronics engineers, so he moved, and I had stayed in my home country because I needed to finish my residency in psychiatry. We are serious, so we did not break up. Now, we had planned to both move to the UK in 2025 after getting some experience in our respective fields, but now my bf is having second thoughts and wants me to move to China. His mother is sick, and he wants to stay in China for at least a couple more years to be with her. I completely understand that, but what are my prospects career-wise? Are there any hospitals for foreigners in China where I would be able to get a license to work? I don't know any Chinese but am fluent in English. Please advise.

upxe: We just had a huge fight, where he implied I might have another man. I have never been so disrespected in any of my relationships. We have been dating for two years and are both strictly monogamous people. We survived war and long-distance together, but it seems that all this time, he did not trust me. I still love him to pieces, but I also respect myself and cannot be with someone who does not trust me. I do not know how to recover from this. All he gives me are weak excuses like "it's not you, it's me". I really thought we had it, and this was the relationship to end all relationships. For life. Guess not. Thank you, everyone, for your advice and support! I am thinking of ending things with him.

Well, sadly, it seems that political disputation is preferred here to actually giving advice.
Being an international doctor in China can be rather difficult, since the healthcare system in China may not be so international and open-minded.

First, as a foreign citizen, you need to first examine whether you are qualified to perform medical procedures in China. This means you should check with the "外国医师来华短期行医暂行管理办法", the "Temporary Act For Foreign Doctors to Practice Medicine Short-termly in China".

http://www.nhc.gov.cn/fzs/s3576/201808/11a4133901a7410698dfdeb1b146d703.shtml
The important things are:
You need to be invited or hired by medical institutions in China
You need to have a medical license in your home country
The temporary medical license in China has to be renewed yearly
Second, I am afraid medical institutions willing to accept international doctors are only limited to private healthcare groups in large cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, etc. Even though the family member of your boyfriends works in a hospital, it is highly unlikely that public hospitals will accept you because of the political risk under the current xenophobic atmosphere.
Third, considering you have a plan to move to the UK, maybe getting medical training in Hong Kong is a better choice.
And although there are plenty of Russian supporters in China, it is unlikely that you will be faced with obvious insults as a Ukrainian. It is more likely that your boyfriend will be greeted: Well done, you are so lucky to have a foreign girlfriend! :)

United Family clinic and Distinct clinic are two private healthcare providers off the top of my head. You can look into those. While anecdotal, I do come across foreigners seeking counseling or psychiatry from time to time through wechat, so there’s a market for it. Might look into the possibility/legality of online options while in China too, to reach more clients. Tier 1 cities are definitely your best bet, though. Particularly Shanghai.

You should think that this question is really too technical for many people. Unless I'm a local resident of a big city

Hong Kong is actively hiring foreign trained doctors who have received training from a sext number of institutions. You can easily look up whether your institution qualifies. That being said, you will be expected to fluently speak Cantonese in a specialty such a psychiatry...

it is highly unlikely that public hospitals will accept you
I thought it's because doctors in public hospitals are classified as civil servants which only Chinese citizens can be. There are a few public hospitals with international dept. which hire foreigners but they are contracted as outsourced workers and are under the supervision of a Chinese citizen. Even then, most of the doctors in the international dept. will be Chinese citizens who came back from overseas.

In terms of job prospects the UK for sure. There's always shortage for doctors due to Brexit and ageing population. Also keep in mind professional qualifications and work experience from China most likely won't be as well recorgnised internationally compare with the UK.ps the wages is more likely to be higher in absolute terms in the UK

UK will be harder due to the new immigration laws requiring new higher entrant salaries.UK openly admits they have a 'hostile' immigration policy.

The boyfriend is not healthcare unfortunately.I am an engineer in the UK and getting the 39k threshold requires years of experience or landing in a high tech company.Unfortunately engineering is not very well paid in UK compared for the COL.

Mostly the other way round, they specifically said healthcare workers are targeted.

Lol no. They are not applying salary requirements etc for health care workers like nurses as theres a big shortage

Residency in Ukraine lasts 2 years, so it would only count as fy1 and 2 in the UK. I do not mind having a lower salary, no matter which country I'll end up working in. Having a job I love and putting my degree to use are more important to me as of right now. I'm still young, I can worry about money later.

There are a lot of international hospitals and private clinics in major cities (Shanghai, Suzhou, Beijing, etc.) I've met a lot of foreign doctors, but I don't know what the licensing requirements are. Some of them do really well, though.
BenQ in Suzhou, or United Family Healthcare in Shanghai. Or Singhealth has a bunch of clinics with foreign doctors, or Parkway health is another one. I'd contact them directly and discuss your options. They'll know a lot more than Reddit.

As a Chinese citizen , I think you could certainly try send your resume to some private hospitals but the chances are not great because of the language barrier and China is not a open minded country. Best chances are asking your bf to uses some of his family’s social networking to put you into one of the hospitals or at least some medical related companies. Most of foreigners works in China I knew are working for foreign companies

1.Psychiatry is nearly non-existent in China. 2.You will be limited to servicing foreigners, most likely foreign children that are not adjusting well.3.You are more needed in your home country.4.Check with the foreign service providers such as Family United.

I wouldnt recommend you apply to a usual hospital.your best bet is like above commenter stated: looking for foreign firms/orgs.general environment in china isnt much better than uk though.just look at youth unemployment.
if youre serious you could move to china and get married.

Keep in mind family problems like those can persist very long. Ie the mother, uncle, brother can stay sick for a long time and he will expect to stay around for a long time. This will diminish your chances in the future and pull back your growth trajectory which you need especially when young. If you spend 5 years over here, that won't be seen as 5 years abroad so you likely will be set back if you ever plan to move on.
Seems no doctors are here, but you should sneak up on some doctors on lixedIn. There are two major players in SH, JiaHui and Family United. See if you can find staff working on lixedIn and see what their experiences are like.
From an outsider perspective going to both, they have foreign staff but their staff typically works only one day per week in a specific hospital. They float around a lot. Further (just by looks) they don't seem to be well paid.
You will also deal with healthcare expectations in China. This is vastly different. Chinese people expect treatment no matter what, it's not always what's best for them, but what they want. Vice versa as a foreigner I'm struggling with getting basic medicine because not everything is exported to here or the latest generation.

DigMeTX
You have to get licensed on the Chinese side which means getting all of your license stuff from Ukraine certified and then being interviewed with medical questions by a panel of Chinese doctors. But yes there are opportunities with foreign clinics as has already been stated. Whatever clinic hires you should help with licensing sib requirements and answering questions. It’s going to be easiest in a very large city.

Man that is going to be a bitter pill to swallow moving to the country that actively supports Putin invasion of your home country (probably materially as well) and is "friends forever" with Putin. Also psychiatry is not much accepted yet in China. You'd better seek to practice in a tier one city that will be more open to psychiatric therapy.

Tbh, most of the jobs in China requires Chinese unless you are working as a Doctor for foreigners who speak English. Not discouraging here but given ur skillset, ur best chance to stay in China is in big cities where high numbers of foreign expats are present.

are you thinking about providing material support to his mother, or just about being physically present?
if you're thinking about material support, look into the possibility of a working visa in the usa. a psychiatrist is a highly trained technical expert. maybe you could qualify for an H1-B or J visa or something. maybe you could bring your spouse, if you get one.
even a low paid psychiatrist in the usa is probably earning more than 200K. more than in the uk, possibly? possibly your usa earnings could provide more support to your mother in law than the total china-based earnings you could both earn combined.
it's an idea. you may be a highly qualified applicant. might not be that infeasible. maybe look into it. the usa can always use some doctors and engineers.

As always doctor and lawyer are very limiting jobs if you really want to relocate. Your accreditation is typically only valid in one country and requires quite some work to transfer.
There are foreign doctors in China but they are all old and got offered high paying jobs at international hospitals. It’s probably best for you to not move here.
As for your relationship struggles, sorry to hear that. It’s probably better for you in the long run though given your career. Best of luck.
