interesting discussion so far; I have no problem with the theory that elephants can recognise friendliness from agressive behaviour, just like we humans, I can look at a stranger and form an opinion whether this person is friendly towards me or not, and then wait for the outcome.
There is so such out there in nature we still do not fully comprehend, more so that we humans still do not understand each other…….what a wonderful world it would be if we could all understand each other?

I can't imagine anyone believing this. Indicating submission by making yourself appear smaller - slightly more believable. You could as well say that he offered his hand and the elephant understood it and shook his hand. That is as dangerous advice.

Maybe, as elephants move faster than you could through the savanna. They would only be mad if they feel endangered and the herd would have youngsters in it as bull elephants are more solitary. They would stop as soon as they do not feel threatened anymore but let me assure you, elephants move very quickly and silently through the bush if they want to.

Taking a boat out into the middle of a deep lake is another way to escape them, and then you can sit there and wait for them to calm down and leave.
