After I finished the books I was blown away and thought this series would be absolutely amazing when we get to the real sci-fi elements of the Earth turning on each other and forcing the relocation of people to Australia.

Your question had me puzzled: as an absolute fan of the trilogy, having read it two full times... I realise I cannot remember how I discovered it. And really, for the sheer evocative power of the first tome, to the thought provoking thinking of the second, up to the dimension bending of the third, it seems uncanny. I should remember, it is an absolute favourite of mine. (Add: José Saramago "Memorial do convento", Boulgakov "the master and Marguerite", and Marquez "a 100 years of solitude").

A Chinese in Singapore. I knew the trilogy but never read it when they were published (huge fan of the author when he wrote short stories in SF World). I was recommended by my classmate who was a math PhD and my first read was in English.
