If you ever run out of money, you are in deep shit.
You will be violently evicted, tossed to die on the streets, cut off from accessing all resources.
So it doesn’t really matter if you yourself believe in the cult of money or not: You have to comply, and run after money.
It’s kind of like living in a village where not going to church will get you burned as a heretic.
Hey, I wonder why the people in that village are so obsessed with going to church?

Because, to quote the undying words of the great philosopher Homer Simpson: “Money can be exchanged for goods and services. Wohoo!” And we all need goods and services.

We are all in a sense competitors, particularly early in life. We choose the 'best' mates we can in terms of health (looks), resources and status. Money is one indicator of status, so people will do what they can to get it or 'appear' like they have it.
Basically, money as an abstraction, has a far broader implication than a medium of exchange. It implies social and intellectual value as well, or at least the appearance of such.
The irony is that even people who aren't terribly materialistic and don't infer status from wealth, find themselves 'playing along' to insure that the perception they create for others implies high status.
A friend of mine was had become quite successful in a business he had started, found himself in an odd situation. He was and is extremely frugal, buying only what was needed to advance his business and foregoing the traditional extravagances. He had no employees and no office (aside from a home office, subcontracting when he needed to.
He had an opportunity to obtain a valuable sales concession, but met with resistance because he was 'small-time'. He resolved the problem in a very creative way--he arranged with a friend to borrow a brand new BMW 5 series and set up a meeting with the vendor who was in Las Vegas for a few days. He arranged to pick him up at his hotel (in the BMW) and take him to breakfast. By the end of breakfast, he had a contract.
The only thing that had changed was the vendor's perception.

The way our (global) current socio-economic structure is organized, Money essentially gives you freedom.
If you have a good amount of money with you (and maybe a sustainable income from investing that money) you are essentially financially free for life.
With this freedom one can really then start doing stuff that makes a difference but may not pay that much. You don't need to be a slave to your job any more and can take risks with your work and career to do things that actually interest you. The corporate environment is usually tough in most places in the world (if they pay you well they also take their pound of flesh in return). If you have enough money, you can be free from it.
Usually, reaching the financial freedom stage is very difficult, since we tend to a) add on more and more responsibilities to our lives as we grow older and b) Make our basic lifestyle more and more expensive alongside.
But once a reasonable degree of financial freedom is reached, I see no reason why one should be running after money any more.

Because people are void inside. Money, however, buys happiness. The problem with happiness is it’s temporal.
So, they have to keep getting more money---becoming obsessed with it---to buy happiness to fill the void in their souls that can never be filled by the things money buys.

I don’t know if ‘obsessed’ is the right choice of word. However, I do think that money has become a measure of some people’s self-worth, they have endowed it with a power it doesn’t posses, the power to make us feel better about ourselves, it can certainly give us a short term boost, but that’s about it.
I think some people have also associated money with power and respect.
Money doesn’t make you powerful, and it doesn’t gain automatic respect. That’s something we have to work on ourselves.
So, why are people ‘obsessed’ with money? Because they have attached a meaning to it that money does not posses. Money is only paper and metal, it’s the meaning we give to it that causes the harm.

Some people are obsessed with money, and they want more, this is something I know due to how some of my family are. Some cant stand if someone else has a few more bucks. However as long as I pay my bills and my kids have food and clothes, I am the type who would help others if I have any money to share to another person who is struggling. I stay on a budget. People who are obsessed with money kind of scare me, and that is called greed. Maybe they were raised so poor that when they get money they hoard it up. if your so obsessed with money that would be all your mind would be on is how to make another dollar. I am glad I am not like that. Greed is bad.

Money has value because we've all agreed it has. Since it has value and you can buy things , you can buy goods and services with it, well it's kind of natural that people desire it.
It’s not much use during a disaster. If WW III occurred, paper money might only be useful as toilet paper.
But again, we rob banks and swindle others because we’ve all agreed that money has value.
Obsessing with it, or obsessing with the lack of it, in my opinion, is a rat hole. It will either drive you crazy if you lack it, or take away from your character if you obsess about having it.
There is nothing wrong with, and loads right with, having lots of money (just ask yourself - if you were suddenly a multimillionaire, would your life become suddenly richer, better, with more possibilities?).
Want to make lots of money? Find an area where people have a nagging problem, come up with a great way to help people solve that problem, do it passionately, as though you’d come on to your life’s work, and along the way, you will most likely get rich without ever having to obsess much about it.

Obsessing over money is dumb.
It's just a means with which to purchase goods and services.
You need just enough to have a reasonably comfortable existence so you can spend your valuable time obsessing over more important things like where you are going to watch the sunset tonight.

It all started the day we were born you were born or i was born we were taught the system of rewards the "do this kid and i'll give you that" or the " you see that guy over there thats your competition you got to beat that guy" and never for once did we try to oppose it felt so natural like thats how its meant to be and we just go with the flow
Time goes by we enter the teens and boy is it thrilling "dad can i go to that party or can i have that new toy or that new dress or that god knows what " and it all makes us feel so powerful and we be so happy like we have everything in the world because we don't realise the value of what has been buying us all this fake happiness our parents smirk when we are not around and say "one day he or she'll realise and they just get back to their business...
And boom one day comes we are 18 and we are told "kid its been awhile now lemme tell you a little secret and out comes a green shiny bill" they say " you see this thing over here well it doesnt grow on trees ,you got to work your ass off for it and thats what you gotta do for the rest of your life "
And then it hits us the world we live in feels not so good now if only we were told to go with the flow and not bought all this fake happiness and told to find it within
So next time it crosses your mind as to why people run after money its a simple answer really "to fill the void within".

It is just because most of the things(not everything) in today's world we get from money only. So the more money the more happiness, less problems. Even people take you seriously if you got the money. People will respect you. You can buy almost anything or any experience using money. So people perceive money as all problem solver and all joy giver. That's why people are greedy about it.

Money doesn't make life 100% happy but it does make life happier. I can buy anything that I want and go on any vacation that I want. If my car breaks down I don't have to worry about it. If I want new clothes I can get them. I grew up very poor and now I am very rich. I can tell you, money does make things better.

I think that people are chasing money because it is the current standard for value. If you happen to live in a city or a town, the only way for you to acquire stuff is by earning or acquiring money and exchanging it for what you want. Wanna travel? You gotta pay the fare. Want a date, you might have to pay for dinner and it is that kind of life. I tend to think that if I had lived on the farms tending to my fruits, flowers and animals I would not be pressed to chase or need money. But since the human race can only move forwards, for now money is generally thought of as the wildcard for accessing resources.
The obsessive tendencies may also rise because people have associated money with value for quite a long time that they now think money is value. It could explain why most people aim at striking it rich instead of providing value and contributing meaningfully to the lives of the people they deal with. Success has since replaced significance, at least for most people.

Success has since replaced significance, at least for most people.

Deposition for crisis management is a natural tendency common to all living beings. Fat bodies in animals and starch deposition in plants are very common examples. A strong chemical check, however, regulates this so that the process goes in right manner. Occasionally, this check fails and this failure is a disease. Some highly obese people in society or unusual sized radish in market seen occasionally are the resultant of this disease.
Similar is the case in money matters. Some people are unable mentally to determine how much is actually too much for them. Though the limits may varry person to person but always with an end point. The auto check in these people shuts off and they are in constant run in accumulation of more and more.

Money doesn't buy happiness, but it makes misery a whole lot easier to live with.

Short answer...I blame Evolution. I think it's simply our survival instinct. Money gives us food and shelter. Now of course there are people that want more money than it is actually needed to survive, these people are exhibiting greed. I believe that this also has to do with an instinctive drive to win.

Statistics show that though an abundance of-money does not make you happier, being able to easily pay your bills actually does. So people have all kinds of issues in life, going-through those combined with stress base on a lack of money is worse. Also it is the most common measurement of success and many feel they can boost their self-esteem with it. However, if the problem they have is not a money problem then obviously money won't fix it.
So it reduces stress and can make us feel better but we delusionaly think it can make us feel better about ourselves and will solve our emotional problems. So of course people are obsessed.

The dictates of how well life can be lived will always be economically driven.
If a car is a car and I asked you to pick between my 1998 minivan and a new Porche, if you had the dough you know which would go.
The great goals of money:
1. To live in retirement and not worry about money.
2. To intervene in our childrens lives with financial assistance.
3. To put our grandchildren through college.
4. To leave behind a legacy of continued good deeds.

Some people equate the amount of money they have with their self worth, their value as human beings. Some others are obsessed with money because of what it can do for them, or they may urgently need it for family reasons. Some people are obsessed with the thrill of the chase in gaining as much money as they can. Others just like having it in the bank, even if they never spend any

Nobody is actually mad about money, they are mad after the things money can buy, the avenues that open when you have money, the psychological (not to mention monetary) advantage you hold over people poorer than you, the comfortable homes you can afford and so on. If you have lots of money, there are lesser limitations you will face.

Because it is so NICE!
I'll not expand on that, it's pretty obvious why having it is nice. It gives independence from work and increasingly it seems from lots of othe social obligations too.
This freedom is both pleasant and narcissistic - and that's where the obsession creeps in. When you forget that edge, the simple fact that money represents the hard work of yourself and others, when it becomes an end in itself it is very, very, hard to remain sane. The need for money starts to overshadow other considerations, and that well paying job in the gun factory becomes a comfortable little world in itself, the use to which that gun you crafted becomes none of your business. Just as well, because if it was, well, the whole thing might become just a little uncomfortable ..

Perhaps, our minds have been brainwashed by the media to celebrate materialism.

because there is nothing without money everything is money, the person without money has no value no one respect him or her.
money=respect
money=food
money=everything
thank god there is not money=oxygen
in short money=life.
I hate money but I need money

Because they have an illusion money can make them happy. Women won to be more beautiful, men want to have higher status. Both things are achievable with money. It makes perfect biological sense as beautiful women and high-status men have more options in terms of sexual partners and more privileges of making choices.
