Both of them are from rural families, and met in a factory in Qingdao (a major city). The man has 4 siblings and a mother who slipped and became disabled in the winter. When they met, she already had a fiance arranged by her adoptive parents. So naturally the parents were very angry when they learned she wanted to be with him instead. They had to deal with the fiance''s family. He also took her to a different city (Tianjin), and the parents even called the police on him. So it''s not just about him not "being rich".
