The study says there is a shortage of 12,000 hospital doctors, and more than 50,000 nurses and midwives - and that the government has "no credible plan" for making the situation any better.

It warns maternity services are "under unsustainable pressure" - 552 midwives left in the past year alone - and there are 700 less full-time equivalent GPs than there were three years ago.

Put together by MPs from the cross-party Health and Social Care Committee, the report pulls no punches when addressing the government over the growing crisis.

MPs said while some progress had been made towards a target of recruiting 50,000 nurses, the government was set to miss its target to recruit 6,000 more GPs, as promised in the Conservative Party manifesto.

It went on to say as a result of staff being under pressure, the NHS was losing millions of full-time equivalent days to staff sickness caused by anxiety, stress, and depression.

"The result is that many in an exhausted workforce are considering leaving - and if they do, pressure will increase still further on their colleagues," the study said, adding that some simple things are not in place, such as access to hot food and drink on shifts and flexible working.

MPs said the government's "refusal" to make workforce planning data public "means that the basic question which every health and care worker is asking: are we training enough staff to meet patient need? will remain unanswered".

The government was warned about this a decade ago, when the average age of NHS staff showed that a third would be retiring in five years. They were warned again before and after Brexit, when the crisis had already begun to take hold and a substantial number of staff came from the EU. Both times they did nothing to prevent it.
Now they claim to be implementing a long term recruitment plan, but are light when pushed on specifics. Let's be clear: the government knew this crisis was coming, did nothing to prevent it and don't really want to do anything about it now - they want the NHS to fail.

When I was in secondary school it was highlighted that construction had an aging demographic and that in 10-20 years most of our experienced infrastructure engineers and technicians would retire. All through my last 4 years at school we were bombarded with work experience at local civil engineering firms, talks from experienced engineers and extra curricular activities to promote engineering and construction.
Leaving school I had a choice of apprenticeships and most importantly an above average salary that made construction attractive. That was 20 years ago. Why can't we do the same with medicine and health care. Highlight and show the good things at a point when kids are planning what subjects to do and what to do with their lives. If the country is facing a shortage of a certain skill then fix it at its source. Give kids the opportunities to see what health care is like and then make the pay and appointments attractive.

Because it’s currently dire. If you showed people what working in healthcare is actually like, you’d shatter their illusions when they’re at school. It’s not hard work, it’s gruelling. The management couldn’t give a crap and the response to a staffing crisis is just to make you do the jobs of 2-3 doctors on your own.
Source: An overworked and very underpaid doctor.

Yep. From the nursing side, it's 12 hour shifts, struggling to take a single break a day, not being allowed to drink water while on some wards due to the supposed risk of contamination, hard physical labour, dealing with abusive, aggressive, sometimes violent patients, whether because they have dementia or are just nasty people... The list goes on.

There are 25% more places in medical school than there were 10 years ago (7500 places per year vs 6000 previously). Brand new medical schools like Lincoln and Sunderland will start graduating doctors in 2024.
It's probably not enough, personally I would drastically improve junior doctor pay, so the ones we have don't all piss off to Australia. But it's probably not fair to say the government are "doing nothing"

They've watched it happen for years.
My wife has worked at our local hospital (the only one left in a hugely populated area after others closed) for 3 years. She has probably had less than 10 shifts that have been fully staffed. If they ever have full staff, someone is immediately moved to another department because they're severely understaffed.
They almost always have more than 8 patients per nurse, which is the generally accepted point where it becomes unsafe, 12 is not uncommon.
The thing is, it's a snowballing effect. When you've got shockingly understaffed wards, stress in an already stressful and underpaid job goes through the roof. More people take time off due to stress and burnout or ultimately just quit. Which means there's less staff, more stress, and more people bail.
I'd bet more people would stick with it if patient ratios were sensible.

From my own personal experience I believe that it’s now in a worse state than it was during the pandemic.
I’ve got a fairly major health issue that requires multiple MRI scans a year and waiting for my second surgery.
Even through 20/21 I was still getting the regular MRI scans I need. My last scheduled one was March 22. I’m still waiting for the appointment date to come through. No idea when or if my follow up surgery is happening.

Can we also not forget that the NHS doesn’t just run on doctors and nurses.
Back office staff in terms of finance and, especially IT, have been taking a massive hit as staff leave to the private sector…on better pay and conditions.
To keep advertising a Cyber Engineer on 32K and then scratching heads on why no suitable applicants is only going to make it worse.
Without back office staff, appropriately compensated, the NHS ceases to function…no matter how many nursing and clinical staff you have.

My wife has been recruiting nurses from Africa, at a cost of £60k each just to get them over here and settled, that could pay the tuition fees of two student nurses.

Yes, but how long would it take to train those two nurses?
Believe it or not, the decision to remove the bursary was because we believed we were training too many nurses in avout 2013 or whenever it was. A near decade of rampant house price inflation, general inflation and wage stagnation later and that looks like a terrible decision.

It takes 3 years to get a nursing degree but they will be working through some of it.
If they'd started at the beginning of the pandemic they'd be qualified by the end of this year.
There are nursing apprenticeships which are great but they put a massive burden on the already overstretched nurses who have to train them.

Don't worry guys we just need to go back to clapping for our NHS workers. That'll surely fix the problem

As a nurse myself I didn't clap. For years they have kept referring to NHS works as 'heros' which I found so patronising and damaging. Hero's sacrifice themselves in disasters. These are just people who are doing a job which a lot of them love but would also appreciate a pay rise every year in line with inflation. I also dislike the term hero's because when they ask for a pay rise or threaten to the strike, the government and media have demonised them for doing this. How dare these 'heros' ask for a pay rise when they are saving lives and should feel lucky to work in such a fantastic service. I loved my job when I was HCA (Healthcare assistant) at 18 but when I qualified as a nurse I just became so depressed from all the paperwork and tickboxing. I barely had chance to even speak to my patients. On top of that I wasn't paid for 6 weeks because HR messed up. So when I did get paid I was emergency taxed and got paid £900 for 6 weeks of long day and night shifts (Mostly nights, they give you a lot when you are newly qualified). On top of that they would make the newly qualified nurses work both Christmas and new year (you really should only have to work one or the other).
I only had one job in the NHS as a nurse and left after 2 years to go private. I haven't looked back since. The pay isn't amazing but they have more admin staff who help with a lot of paperwork behind the scenes which allows me to care for my patients and provide better quality care. I have KPI targets and if I meet them which is easy to do, i get a nice bonus twice a year. I also actually get time to have a conversation with my patients now. I feel so much happier and I completely understand why NHS staff are leaving, especially for a better work life balance. Sorry rant over!

Brexit didn't help as we lost staff and then a lot more left as they felt unwelcome in this country. Then the remaining staff are underpaid, overworked and treated like shit by government and the public. Those remaining staff many are using food banks, others aren't taking holidays as it puts pressure on colleagues.
This isn't by accident, this was all planned by the government. They want this to happen, they want people to quit, for people to suffer, die etc as it turns the public against the NHS. Underfund the system, break the system, turn people against the system, sell the system.

Pay them a decent wage and guarantee to match inflation. People want good money and security.

Not only have successive governments failed to bolster investment in the NHS, they’ve largely disincentivised domestic training to fill the gap.
