I can't believe how rapidly China is moving forward on many fronts. It is a very well-organized society where people work together and have a high level of trust in their leadership.
Conversely, the leadership is fine-tuned to public needs, getting things done and controlling corruption.

MAGLEV Benefits: 1)Hanging protects maglev mechanics against rain water, snow, severe weather. 2)Hanging magnets reduce friction wear & tear since train weight isn't sitting on magnets. 3)Debris, dirt, trash, animals, people... are less likely to get in way of train. 4)Top roof rail protects high current maglev from elements & reduced exposed maintenance issues. 5)High suspension rails does not restrict animals, wildlife, trees, homes, etc below so saves space. 6)At full rest stops, train hangs on roof wheels; As train speeds up, top roof magnets lifts train off it's small inverted roof wheels. This reduced friction and contacts on magnets

Hopefully the new maglev system will perform as expected and will be approved after its test run. The maglev technology is even more environment friendly than the standard trains and it's also more cost-efficient in the long run. This one in particular will also substantially alleviate the traffic congestion in the Tier 1 cities.

So how does it work?
Permanent magnets lift and reduce resistance on an existing wheel mechanism, or is it lifted completely by the magnet? If its permanently levitating, how is it moving forwards?

People thought the same about airplanes when that became a thing. In theory this is actually alot safer.

Actually it was first developed by the English engineer Eric Laithwaite, first operated in Birmingham, England in 1984.

A
@Kevin Barnbrook Eric Laithwaite invented maglev technology but he didn’t engineer or develop this specific rail system…
Are you not aware of how technological advancements work? Is China responsible for the development every modern firearm because they made the first firearm back in the 1300s?

Kevin Barnbrook
@A The technology was invented by Laithwaite, that was my point, it is sad that I have to explain this to someone. Do you understand how the English language works?

Scott
@Kevin Barnbrook Do you understand how english work? You said “Actually it was first developed by the English engineer Eric Laithwaite, first operated in Birmingham, England in 1984” that implies that it’s not a new technology because Laithwaite already builed it before,. By the way Maglev was invented by James Powell and Gordon Danby.

The difference between the permanent magnet rail train and the traditional rail train is mainly in the difference of the motor. Compared with the excitation motor (traditional motor currently used), the permanent magnet motor has high energy density, and has obvious advantages in weight, volume and energy consumption, that is, it is more energy-saving, which represents the new development of train traction technology. If used on high-speed rail, it will be more energy efficient. However, the permanent magnet synchronous motor has a low temperature resistance limit, is difficult to manufacture, has a high cost, and requires a large amount of rare earth elements. China has quite mature experience in using permanent magnet synchronous motors, and almost all electric vehicles in China use permanent magnet synchronous motors.

『Crying Water』
Impressive. Friction is the greatest energy thief, so this technology will save more energy and technically is greener compared to other train technologies

UrLocalPeacekeeper
I would still pick for a regular train, though I’d chose HSR for long route and trolly trains and trams for short distance mobility since they are significantly cheaper to build and maintain. Also it’s not like they have massive friction between the wheel and the tracks themselves not to mention you could fit much bigger and longer train cars.

UrLocalPeacekeeper
@Cr0sad3r this one is only economically viable for carrying passengers, freight rails are still much cheaper and more efficient compared to this for carrying cargo especially bulky ones like raw materials.

Gosh... They have developed a variant of the maglev and our country is yet to get a bullet train!! Still a far way to go...

@Kingston Tiger electric trains itself are highly efficient.

Yoshi
@Fork regular trains cost way less. The infrastructure necessary is alteady built. And it's also way simpler. No need for pillars and bridges all the way.

That's a great engineering feat. I'm a little curious though (for those who are more engineering savvy) is there any real advantages in it being suspended as opposed to just being the normal way? And can suspended maglev's also travel as fast as normal ones?
Still, a really impressive feat and the lack of power use for suspension makes it all a lot more efficient.

Edit: Thank you to all those who replied. I've read all your responses (at least at this moment in time) and I found them really insightful. I think the space issue is probably the most compelling one as it simplifies adding infrastructure and results in less preparation work (I'd guess). Thanks for being helpful and please keep them coming. Also just hope there are sufficient emergency fail safes (in the case the train has to be evacuated for whatever reason).

ArtamRein
Not an engineer but my guess is the infrastructure for suspended rail is better suited for non flat terrain and can allocate more space for vegetation in case it crosses forest and such

Trinity Gaming
I think it's like this, imagine a thread, if you try to make it stand it can't unless it is rigid but still you need it to balance so you have to use two support with the center of gravity close to the car but if you suspend something like a thread it would be straight and thus the balance would be solved easily because of gravity thus reducing the need to have two supports close to the car.

by the data, suspension train is more efficient than any other kind of train with the same technology (diesel engine, for example). I don't know the technical explanation.

Robert Nitschke
as a random person online, the gravity balancing and friction ideas sounds right. that track looks a lot easier and cheaper to make than something sitting on the ground.

VRBebe
I can only guess the answer to your first question. I think it would be easier and more cost effective to build a system that’s built on top instead of the ground. If you watch the video, the train goes over rivers, roads, structures, etc. if the rails were built on the ground, it’ll take a lot of resources dealing with those obstacles.

Bagpuss
Maybe it's more stable, since the centre of gravity is below the point by which it is suspended.

cobalt blue
It stated in the video maglev train needs to be levitate to be able to move in a regular track, this suspended model using permanent magnet so less power needed.. so my guess is it's float forever and only move or stop using combination of break and electromagnetic probably automatically with algorithm to make easier to handle/drive

Stan_albatross
@VRBebe but surely it would be far far more expensive to mine and ship the rare earths required from Africa etc to the construction site solely to be used in some train
were the rails only made on the ground they could use locally sourced resources but in this scenario they have to build a GIANT metal track in the air using metals imported over thousands of kilometres
doesn't seem more cost effective to me

VRBebe
@Stan_albatross the rare materials are used in the magnet technology of the train not the actual structure. There are normal trains that are suspended right now and they run on old technology.

TheHerrMan
The normal way requires houses and land to be dug up and displaced. This way they just installed some poles and didn't dig anything greater that some relatively small circles

Jesse
I wouldn't mind catching a ride on that train, it doesn't take more than it gives to be fit for purpose.
How smooth is the ride, the passengers looked as if they would be more steady on the train than the platform :)
It is so refreshing to see the largest and most populated continent invest in the infrastructure of there transport, thats the really smart thing here.
