Grand Canyon Caverns, located about 100 miles west of Flagstaff, Arizona, features a small hotel and restaurant 20 floors down where the stranded tourists have been staying while workers try to fix the elevator.

The Cococino County Sheriff's Office was determining whether they would need to hoist the tourists out through the elevator shaft on Monday.

"We have this thing – it's like a lift, and we would basically lift them up the elevator shaft in a harness, something like you see come out of a helicopter in the ocean, something to that effect," Jon Paxton, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office, told Fox News Digital on Monday.

There are 20 flights of stairs that people can take to get out of the caverns, but the tourists who are stuck have medical conditions preventing them from climbing out, Paxton said.

I visited the GC caverns a few times. I've always wondered about that well-aged elevator and how much care & maintenance it gets. I can take 20 flights of stairs, but a failing elevator? Not so much. If the lift is sketchy, I'd rather take the stairs...for my own safety. The caverns are well worth visiting. They are said to be haunted. The Ghost Adventures crew did an episode on that. Very cool.

I’ve never been trapped at a hotel and restaurant. Sounds terrific. The only thing that could make it better is to say there’s no cell service and nobody can call me! Is there a bar?

About 20 years ago, pre-hotel. They had food remaining from the cold-war bomb-shelter days.

The food and water is still down there, you see it on the tour.

Sounds like a money pit to me. These attractions are not interesting and if you really want to take the tour, just go to You Tube and I'm sure someone recorded the tour for you. Caverns, Caves, Animal Encounters, zip-lines, and aquariums should be outlawed! Zoos are okay if they serve frozen lemonade.

I agree with zip lines and special Animal Encounters like swim with the Dolphins, complete waste of money. But Caverns, caves and aquariums are interesting so are zoos. It's one thing to see it on a TV or computer screen and completely different to see in person. Like the space center. Seeing a launch in person is way cooler than on TV. Standing under a Saturn 5 rocket gives you a far better sense of its power than watching a launch as well.

if ghosts show up I bet they will get out quickly

So they were stuck in a hotel... sorta like a covid quarantine... is this really newsworthy?

I saw that episode….it was the first thing I thought of when I read the story.

I wonder how the became haunted. A broken elevator maybe?

deplorablemesthe4th
they should make it an attraction -- give it the functionality of the parachute drop at the fair

If you took the stairs you could take rest breaks along the way.

Well, now you know. I'll schedule my visit for right after the elevator has been maintenanced.

How about not going? That's pretty safe.

If it was shown on Ghost Adventures then by definition it’s fake.

tell my about the underground hotel?

Three years ago it was around $400 per night. There is no radio or TV reception down there. You have a 32 inch TV set, bunch of DVDs, and many books. Once you turn off the lights, it's the darkest dark you've ever experienced.
