As a follow up to my previous message I should also tell you that Ford used to have a massive office complex in Basildon in Essex not far from where I live, that was sold off about 20 years ago, and has been converted to all apartments. Ford of Europe HQ in Brentwood in Essex has also been sold off and is now all apartments, and there are rumours that the Ford Research and Development centre at Dunton in Essex will also soon be sold off and the land built on for new houses and apartments. Like you said, Ford in Europe is dying.

Realizing that BYD is smart, and they too realize that an existing ICE plant is not as efficient as a ground-up-built BEV plant, I suspect BYD is considering this as an easier "toehold" to get their foot in the door, manufacturing-wise, then trying to entitle the development of a ground-up plant. I speculate that times will be more difficult for a Chinese firm in Europe and compared to a company, like Ford, who has been there for generations.

I am surprised that ford are going to sell to a competitor but as you say, the market segments that BYD chase Ford are pulling out of. But with both Tesla and BYD making cars within the EU, it's a case of kicking down the floodgates rather then have the whole made in china thrown at them. Made in the EU!!! One other thing to be aware of about ford dropping the two small cars. The recent EU rules on safety equipment currently applies to only new models of cars on sale. But after 2024 it applies to all new cars on sale even if they were on sale prior to 2024. It is probable that the cost of re-engineering the cars along with either increased prices or, heavily reduced margins make continuing to sell them unviable. And probably more expensive then the cheapest EVs.

Of course car sales are going to be in decline as there is just not an affordable EV out there with the range needed yet.... It will come at some point in the future, but until it does car sales will decline. I doubt you could make a fiesta EV at a price point those buyers could afford.

I drive a focus in the U.K. my second one, and small hatchbacks have always been popular due to the congested U.K. roads and many people like myself with no off road parking, the Fiesta/Focus have not really kept pace with modern car infotainment systems and Ford have been years too late in transitioning to an E.V. I think this is a bad strategy for Ford. You never want to put all your eggs in one basket. What if there is a big spike in energy prices and all you have is giant SUVs and giant pickups? What if a recession hits and everybody wants a more affordable car and not a house on wheels? Also, Ford may feel pressure from the Cybertruck and model Y and have nothing to sell in the EV space if all it puts out is a pickup and Mustang EV. I would make a full line of options for the consumer, including mass produced affordable EVs in case bad times hit.

Ford is very smart. A big mistake that businessmen can make is refusing to disregard sunk costs. It's uncomfortable that a company has to leave a market in which it has operated for so long and invested so much (including factories and other assets). But a smart businessman will never let these assets bleed the company dry; get rid of all the assets that don't make any money and focus on the assets and markets that make you the most. Ford made a smart decision when the company decided to get rid of its sedan lineup.

Me too, I leased 2 in a row starting in 2012. Great little car with rubbish range and boot-space. They did NOTHING with the car to improve it over it's lifespan. If they had bumped up the range and boot-space I would have bought one and still be driving it instead of my Model 3
