After 15 years living in HK I returned to Australia 2 years ago. Likewise, I just cannot fit in here. Would return to HK tomorrow if I could. All friends and family here are anti-China, and never wanted to know the truth about the 2019 HK riots. Friends that I had for years before leaving, I just don't visit now. Only keep in contact with HK friends and another that moved to the mainland.

While i'd always planned to leave the US, the catalyst that forced me to was me becoming very sick with covid and longcovid and losing the ability to work for a long time, and China wasnt accepting travelers due to the pandemic, so I came here. Im doing better now and hoping to return to China if I can, that was always the goal. However this place has cultural similarities to Kunming where I used to live, so I feel very at home here in the meantime.

@ironfistarrival highly doubt that coz it’s not very hard to get health care in China if you are employed. The company would pay for most of the bill. Even in some cases you don’t have health care from employer, it’s not that expensive to get a commercial / private insurance in China like $500 / month at most. And most of the public hospitals are very affordable compared to Canada. in Canada if you don’t have health care then it’s a disaster coz just one basic visit ( no treatment at all ) would cost $800 alone. And pneumonia is not severe long term disease like cancer, it could be only $1000 if you pay by yourself or way less. And btw it’s 10 years ago so China has changed a lot even with health care.

I know this feeling well. I lived in China for 32 years. I then spent four months of winter in the USA last year. I had struggles with vehicles, insurance, visits to the doctor to renew medication, general purchasing at supermarkets or food in general. It was a harsh eye-opening experience. I realized how much I have changed over the decades. The US certainly has things I love, yet China is the place I feel truly at ease.

@never4ever386 I just viewed a walking video of Neufchatel yesterday. Block after block of completely treeless narrow walkways with closely spaced featureless buildings. Easy to keep clean, but the only plants and trees were a few sorry specimens struggling to survive in pockets of compacted soil or in planters within the almost completely paved over public spaces. No flowers, no birds or other wildlife. At least they got rid of the cobblestones and brick walkways! Most European cities are paved over ecological wastelands!

@Apodeipnon Actually it’s not about the weather, but the government governance makes it possible for trees being planted along the road in almost every city, town, or even village in China. Yes, the weather is more humid in the south of China, like Shanghai, Chongqing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, etc, yet, in the north where the weather is much dryer and less rain, trees are also there. Only difference is there will be many tree leaves falling off to the ground in autumn and bare branches for the whole winter in the north, like Beijing, xian, etc.

I relate so much with your experiences Daniel. When you talk about the memories in your home country, and living an entire different life now. It's such a complex feeling. I have fond memories back home, But I too just don't think I could ever move back, Not only for me, but for my daughters sake. I just think that life in Socialist China is better on so many levels and it has a bright future ahead. Seeing how there are Chinese abroad who wish they could go back to China only reinforces these feelings.

One stark difference I find in major western cities and big Chinese cities is the sound of sirens. You can hear it almost every hour in the west but rarely or a lot less in China. Fire trucks, police, ambulance, there's always something happening downtown in Sydney or London. Not so in Shanghai or xiamen.

The last 20 years, I live in China. I concluded that that western society is radiating negative vibes while in China wherever you look you feel the positive vibes I feel this is due to the fact that western people feel the pressure in a society that has its quality of life over-regulated and steadily reduced, while I China society is enjoying a regular uplifting of their quality of life and a feeling that their Government cares for them which is something unknown in the west. Election in western society has created division, nations lack of long term strategy for economic development. Election does not deliver democracy which is defined as " of people, for the people, by the people". while China is different, more democratic society.

I was in China a few months ago and noticed that they have less road rage and more patient with one another. I guess they are used to that environment. One thing I like about China is that I can go to 7-Eleven get a nice cheap beer or alcohol beverage and drink it anywhere I want, that's the freedom we don't have in Aust

I think the drinking alcohol in public law/rule exists for a reason as the alcoholic issues are indeed much more serious there. It starts from teenagers and alcohol drinks are considered an integrated part of the ‘fun’ in parties there. By contrast, people have so many more fun activities and so many more food and beverages to enjoy in China, alcohol drinks have never been deemed as a inseparable part of fun or pleasure in daily life.

@Sfran_ In Chinese tradition, gatherings must involve drinking alcohol, but getting drunk is considered very embarrassing. When one person toasts another and drinks a lot of alcohol, it is called "jingjiu" (proposing a toast), which signifies great respect for the other person. To reciprocate the same level of respect, the other person must drink an equal amount. If someone can consume a large quantity of alcohol without vomiting or talking nonsense, it is regarded as a strong ability and earns admiration.
Drinking alone in China is called "drinking sorrowful wine" and is seen as something only losers do. As a result, drinking alone in public spaces is very uncommon, and there are no corresponding regulations to manage it.
In contrast, maybe thirty years ago, signs prohibiting public urination and spitting were very common on Chinese streets, primarily because such behaviors were so widespread that they required regulation.

By law in Canada: Private property should be marked or fenced. I found many Canadian are narrowed minded and self-centered. Once I park my car on the street, a man and wife came out and told me that I cannot park on their street. I looked around and there were no sign of no parking, replied to them but they still insist that I cannot park on their street. I ignore them and parked my rental car there. When I came back a few hours later, the hood of my car was cover with trash. Some Canadian may look friendly from outside but rotten from inside! And often the Natives are treated like animals in their own land

What you described about how the police "works" in Canada is bang on! A number of years ago, I was drive home from a after work gathering, I got pull over by the police for the exact reason you mentioned, turning right at a light and not doing a full stop. It was actually worse than the police chanced on seeing a minor infraction that they can cash in on, they told me they were following me almost from my gathering place, seeing I was driving "fast, but still within the legal limit", and guessing if they follow me, they would find something to ticket me on.

Especially bad in Montreal Island. I was driving there and noticed a police car following me. He pulled me over after I made a right turn on a red light after coming to a full stop. He recognized that I had a rental so was from out of town and not know specifically on the Island it is not legal to make right turn on red.

@ironfistarrival highly doubt that coz it’s not very hard to get health care in China if you are employed. The company would pay for most of the bill. Even in some cases you don’t have health care from employer, it’s not that expensive to get a commercial / private insurance in China like $500 / month at most. And most of the public hospitals are very affordable compared to Canada. in Canada if you don’t have health care then it’s a disaster coz just one basic visit ( no treatment at all ) would cost $800 alone. And pneumonia is not severe long term disease like cancer, it could be only $1000 if you pay by yourself or way less. And btw it’s 10 years ago so China has changed a lot even with health care.

I know this feeling well. I lived in China for 32 years. I then spent four months of winter in the USA last year. I had struggles with vehicles, insurance, visits to the doctor to renew medication, general purchasing at supermarkets or food in general. It was a harsh eye-opening experience. I realized how much I have changed over the decades. The US certainly has things I love, yet China is the place I feel truly at ease.

@never4ever386 I just viewed a walking video of Neufchatel yesterday. Block after block of completely treeless narrow walkways with closely spaced featureless buildings. Easy to keep clean, but the only plants and trees were a few sorry specimens struggling to survive in pockets of compacted soil or in planters within the almost completely paved over public spaces. No flowers, no birds or other wildlife. At least they got rid of the cobblestones and brick walkways! Most European cities are paved over ecological wastelands!

@Apodeipnon Actually it’s not about the weather, but the government governance makes it possible for trees being planted along the road in almost every city, town, or even village in China. Yes, the weather is more humid in the south of China, like Shanghai, Chongqing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, etc, yet, in the north where the weather is much dryer and less rain, trees are also there. Only difference is there will be many tree leaves falling off to the ground in autumn and bare branches for the whole winter in the north, like Beijing, xian, etc.

I relate so much with your experiences Daniel. When you talk about the memories in your home country, and living an entire different life now. It's such a complex feeling. I have fond memories back home, But I too just don't think I could ever move back, Not only for me, but for my daughters sake. I just think that life in Socialist China is better on so many levels and it has a bright future ahead. Seeing how there are Chinese abroad who wish they could go back to China only reinforces these feelings.

One stark difference I find in major western cities and big Chinese cities is the sound of sirens. You can hear it almost every hour in the west but rarely or a lot less in China. Fire trucks, police, ambulance, there's always something happening downtown in Sydney or London. Not so in Shanghai or xiamen.

The last 20 years, I live in China. I concluded that that western society is radiating negative vibes while in China wherever you look you feel the positive vibes I feel this is due to the fact that western people feel the pressure in a society that has its quality of life over-regulated and steadily reduced, while I China society is enjoying a regular uplifting of their quality of life and a feeling that their Government cares for them which is something unknown in the west. Thank you Daniel, love your videos.

Election in western society has created division, nations lack of long term strategy for economic development. Election does not deliver democracy which is defined as " of people, for the people, by the people". while China is different, more democratic society.

I was in China a few months ago and noticed that they have less road rage and more patient with one another. I guess they are used to that environment. One thing I like about China is that I can go to 7-Eleven get a nice cheap beer or alcohol beverage and drink it anywhere I want, that's the freedom we don't have in Aust

I think the drinking alcohol in public law/rule exists for a reason as the alcoholic issues are indeed much more serious there. It starts from teenagers and alcohol drinks are considered an integrated part of the ‘fun’ in parties there. By contrast, people have so many more fun activities and so many more food and beverages to enjoy in China, alcohol drinks have never been deemed as a inseparable part of fun or pleasure in daily life.

@Sfran_ In Chinese tradition, gatherings must involve drinking alcohol, but getting drunk is considered very embarrassing. When one person toasts another and drinks a lot of alcohol, it is called "jingjiu" (proposing a toast), which signifies great respect for the other person. To reciprocate the same level of respect, the other person must drink an equal amount. If someone can consume a large quantity of alcohol without vomiting or talking nonsense, it is regarded as a strong ability and earns admiration.
Drinking alone in China is called "drinking sorrowful wine" and is seen as something only losers do. As a result, drinking alone in public spaces is very uncommon, and there are no corresponding regulations to manage it.
In contrast, maybe thirty years ago, signs prohibiting public urination and spitting were very common on Chinese streets, primarily because such behaviors were so widespread that they required regulation.

By law in Canada: Private property should be marked or fenced. I found many Canadian are narrowed minded and self-centered. Once I park my car on the street, a man and wife came out and told me that I cannot park on their street. I looked around and there were no sign of no parking, replied to them but they still insist that I cannot park on their street. I ignore them and parked my rental car there. When I came back a few hours later, the hood of my car was cover with trash. Some Canadian may look friendly from outside but rotten from inside! And often the Natives are treated like animals in their own land

What you described about how the police "works" in Canada is bang on! A number of years ago, I was drive home from a after work gathering, I got pull over by the police for the exact reason you mentioned, turning right at a light and not doing a full stop. It was actually worse than the police chanced on seeing a minor infraction that they can cash in on, they told me they were following me almost from my gathering place, seeing I was driving "fast, but still within the legal limit", and guessing if they follow me, they would find something to ticket me on.

Especially bad in Montreal Island. I was driving there and noticed a police car following me. He pulled me over after I made a right turn on a red light after coming to a full stop. He recognized that I had a rental so was from out of town and not know specifically on the Island it is not legal to make right turn on red.

After 15 years living in HK I returned to Australia 2 years ago. Likewise, I just cannot fit in here. Would return to HK tomorrow if I could. All friends and family here are anti-China, and never wanted to know the truth about the 2019 HK riots. Friends that I had for years before leaving, I just don't visit now. Only keep in contact with HK friends and another that moved to the mainland.

@DanielDumbrill i live in Merida, Yucatan in Mexico. While i'd always planned to leave the US, the catalyst that forced me to was me becoming very sick with covid and longcovid and losing the ability to work for a long time, and China wasnt accepting travelers due to the pandemic, so I came here. Im doing better now and hoping to return to China if I can, that was always the goal. However this place has cultural similarities to Kunming where I used to live, so I feel very at home here in the meantime.

I know this feeling well. I lived in China for 32 years. I then spent four months of winter in the USA last year. I had struggles with vehicles, insurance, visits to the doctor to renew medication, general purchasing at supermarkets or food in general. It was a harsh eye-opening experience. I realized how much I have changed over the decades. The US certainly has things I love, yet China is the place I feel truly at ease.

@never4ever386 I just viewed a walking video of Neufchatel yesterday. Block after block of completely treeless narrow walkways with closely spaced featureless buildings. Easy to keep clean, but the only plants and trees were a few sorry specimens struggling to survive in pockets of compacted soil or in planters within the almost completely paved over public spaces. No flowers, no birds or other wildlife. At least they got rid of the cobblestones and brick walkways! Most European cities are paved over ecological wastelands!

@Apodeipnon Actually it’s not about the weather, but the government governance makes it possible for trees being planted along the road in almost every city, town, or even village in China. Yes, the weather is more humid in the south of China, like Shanghai, Chongqing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, etc, yet, in the north where the weather is much dryer and less rain, trees are also there. Only difference is there will be many tree leaves falling off to the ground in autumn and bare branches for the whole winter in the north, like Beijing, xian, etc.

I relate so much with your experiences Daniel. When you talk about the memories in your home country, and living an entire different life now. It's such a complex feeling. I have fond memories back home, But I too just don't think I could ever move back, Not only for me, but for my daughters sake. I just think that life in Socialist China is better on so many levels and it has a bright future ahead. Seeing how there are Chinese abroad who wish they could go back to China only reinforces these feelings.

One stark difference I find in major western cities and big Chinese cities is the sound of sirens. You can hear it almost every hour in the west but rarely or a lot less in China. Fire trucks, police, ambulance, there's always something happening downtown in Sydney or London. Not so in Shanghai or xiamen.

The last 20 years, I live in China. I concluded that that western society is radiating negative vibes while in China wherever you look you feel the positive vibes I feel this is due to the fact that western people feel the pressure in a society that has its quality of life over-regulated and steadily reduced, while I China society is enjoying a regular uplifting of their quality of life and a feeling that their Government cares for them which is something unknown in the west. Thank you Daniel, love your videos.

Election in western society has created division, nations lack of long term strategy for economic development. Election does not deliver democracy which is defined as " of people, for the people, by the people". while China is different, more democratic society.

I was in China a few months ago and noticed that they have less road rage and more patient with one another. I guess they are used to that environment. One thing I like about China is that I can go to 7-Eleven get a nice cheap beer or alcohol beverage and drink it anywhere I want, that's the freedom we don't have in Aust

I think the drinking alcohol in public law/rule exists for a reason as the alcoholic issues are indeed much more serious there. It starts from teenagers and alcohol drinks are considered an integrated part of the ‘fun’ in parties there. By contrast, people have so many more fun activities and so many more food and beverages to enjoy in China, alcohol drinks have never been deemed as a inseparable part of fun or pleasure in daily life.

When one person toasts another and drinks a lot of alcohol, it is called "jingjiu" (proposing a toast), which signifies great respect for the other person. To reciprocate the same level of respect, the other person must drink an equal amount. If someone can consume a large quantity of alcohol without vomiting or talking nonsense, it is regarded as a strong ability and earns admiration.
Drinking alone in China is called "drinking sorrowful wine" and is seen as something only losers do. As a result, drinking alone in public spaces is very uncommon, and there are no corresponding regulations to manage it.
In contrast, maybe thirty years ago, signs prohibiting public urination and spitting were very common on Chinese streets, primarily because such behaviors were so widespread that they required regulation.

By law in Canada: Private property should be marked or fenced. I found many Canadian are narrowed minded and self-centered. Once I park my car on the street, a man and wife came out and told me that I cannot park on their street. I looked around and there were no sign of no parking, replied to them but they still insist that I cannot park on their street. I ignore them and parked my rental car there. When I came back a few hours later, the hood of my car was cover with trash. Some Canadian may look friendly from outside but rotten from inside! And often the Natives are treated like animals in their own land

What you described about how the police "works" in Canada is bang on! A number of years ago, I was drive home from a after work gathering, I got pull over by the police for the exact reason you mentioned, turning right at a light and not doing a full stop. It was actually worse than the police chanced on seeing a minor infraction that they can cash in on, they told me they were following me almost from my gathering place, seeing I was driving "fast, but still within the legal limit", and guessing if they follow me, they would find something to ticket me on.

Especially bad in Montreal Island. I was driving there and noticed a police car following me. He pulled me over after I made a right turn on a red light after coming to a full stop. He recognized that I had a rental so was from out of town and not know specifically on the Island it is not legal to make right turn on red.

After 15 years living in HK I returned to Australia 2 years ago. Likewise, I just cannot fit in here. Would return to HK tomorrow if I could. All friends and family here are anti-China, and never wanted to know the truth about the 2019 HK riots. Friends that I had for years before leaving, I just don't visit now. Only keep in contact with HK friends and another that moved to the mainland.

@DanielDumbrill i live in Merida, Yucatan in Mexico. While i'd always planned to leave the US, the catalyst that forced me to was me becoming very sick with covid and longcovid and losing the ability to work for a long time, and China wasnt accepting travelers due to the pandemic, so I came here. Im doing better now and hoping to return to China if I can, that was always the goal. However this place has cultural similarities to Kunming where I used to live, so I feel very at home here in the meantime.

@ironfistarrival highly doubt that coz it’s not very hard to get health care in China if you are employed. The company would pay for most of the bill. Even in some cases you don’t have health care from employer, it’s not that expensive to get a commercial / private insurance in China like $500 / month at most. And most of the public hospitals are very affordable compared to Canada. in Canada if you don’t have health care then it’s a disaster coz just one basic visit ( no treatment at all ) would cost $800 alone. And pneumonia is not severe long term disease like cancer, it could be only $1000 if you pay by yourself or way less. And btw it’s 10 years ago so China has changed a lot even with health care.

@Apodeipnon Actually it’s not about the weather, but the government governance makes it possible for trees being planted along the road in almost every city, town, or even village in China. Yes, the weather is more humid in the south of China, like Shanghai, Chongqing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, etc, yet, in the north where the weather is much dryer and less rain, trees are also there. Only difference is there will be many tree leaves falling off to the ground in autumn and bare branches for the whole winter in the north, like Beijing, xian, etc.

They are also blind to UK guilt for militarily supporting the GENOCIDE in Gaza, which is another division….

I relate so much with your experiences Daniel. When you talk about the memories in your home country, and living an entire different life now. It's such a complex feeling. I have fond memories back home, But I too just don't think I could ever move back, Not only for me, but for my daughters sake. I just think that life in Socialist China is better on so many levels and it has a bright future ahead. Seeing how there are Chinese abroad who wish they could go back to China only reinforces these feelings.

One stark difference I find in major western cities and big Chinese cities is the sound of sirens. You can hear it almost every hour in the west but rarely or a lot less in China. Fire trucks, police, ambulance, there's always something happening downtown in Sydney or London. Not so in Shanghai or xiamen.

The last 20 years, I live in China. I concluded that that western society is radiating negative vibes while in China wherever you look you feel the positive vibes I feel this is due to the fact that western people feel the pressure in a society that has its quality of life over-regulated and steadily reduced, while I China society is enjoying a regular uplifting of their quality of life and a feeling that their Government cares for them which is something unknown in the west. Thank you Daniel, love your videos.

Election in western society has created division, nations lack of long term strategy for economic development. Election does not deliver democracy which is defined as " of people, for the people, by the people". while China is different, more democratic society.

I was in China a few months ago and noticed that they have less road rage and more patient with one another. I guess they are used to that environment. One thing I like about China is that I can go to 7-Eleven get a nice cheap beer or alcohol beverage and drink it anywhere I want, that's the freedom we don't have in Aust

I think the drinking alcohol in public law/rule exists for a reason as the alcoholic issues are indeed much more serious there. It starts from teenagers and alcohol drinks are considered an integrated part of the ‘fun’ in parties there. By contrast, people have so many more fun activities and so many more food and beverages to enjoy in China, alcohol drinks have never been deemed as a inseparable part of fun or pleasure in daily life.

@Sfran_ In Chinese tradition, gatherings must involve drinking alcohol, but getting drunk is considered very embarrassing. When one person toasts another and drinks a lot of alcohol, it is called "jingjiu" (proposing a toast), which signifies great respect for the other person. To reciprocate the same level of respect, the other person must drink an equal amount. If someone can consume a large quantity of alcohol without vomiting or talking nonsense, it is regarded as a strong ability and earns admiration.
Drinking alone in China is called "drinking sorrowful wine" and is seen as something only losers do. As a result, drinking alone in public spaces is very uncommon, and there are no corresponding regulations to manage it.
In contrast, maybe thirty years ago, signs prohibiting public urination and spitting were very common on Chinese streets, primarily because such behaviors were so widespread that they required regulation.

Perhaps you and I grew up in different regions (or even in parallel universes).

By law in Canada: Private property should be marked or fenced. I found many Canadian are narrowed minded and self-centered. Once I park my car on the street, a man and wife came out and told me that I cannot park on their street. I looked around and there were no sign of no parking, replied to them but they still insist that I cannot park on their street. I ignore them and parked my rental car there. When I came back a few hours later, the hood of my car was cover with trash. Some Canadian may look friendly from outside but rotten from inside! And often the Natives are treated like animals in their own land

What you described about how the police "works" in Canada is bang on! A number of years ago, I was drive home from a after work gathering, I got pull over by the police for the exact reason you mentioned, turning right at a light and not doing a full stop. It was actually worse than the police chanced on seeing a minor infraction that they can cash in on, they told me they were following me almost from my gathering place, seeing I was driving "fast, but still within the legal limit", and guessing if they follow me, they would find something to ticket me on.

Especially bad in Montreal Island. I was driving there and noticed a police car following me. He pulled me over after I made a right turn on a red light after coming to a full stop. He recognized that I had a rental so was from out of town and not know specifically on the Island it is not legal to make right turn on red.
