Desert Storm infantry vet here, 5th Cavalry regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. We watched 4 A-10's completely decimate a battalion of Iraqi armor on our push through southern Iraq. When the A-10's left the AO, what was left of that battalion did nothing but surrender. I never fired a shot, never got shot at. I will always love my angel, the Warthog.

first thank you for your service, I never got past Jrotc do to an injury. I have lost friends and family of friends from desert storm. I have been in love with our military in all they do for our country, I do help out behind the scene... and the A-10 warthog is 1 of the greatest combat fighters of all time.

I’m alive because of the A-10, and there are probably millions of Vets and ADM members who have similar experiences as mine, so to say that I am biased is an understatement to say the least… do I have absolute faith that there is something that could equally replace the Warthog? Yes, but new technology and machinery does not have existing legendary status carrying with it lore and history that would imminently drive fear into the hardest of soldiers… and as much as I love technology and advanced weaponry, there will never be another A-10 Warthog! Thank You dear friend and savior! I will be forever indebted to your service! Semper Fidelis!!

@stevesmith6385 That meaningless bullshit saved me and 12 other Marines from an otherwise likely death I wouldn't wish on anyone...the previous day this particular group of "Taliban" had ambushed a med transport, captured them, then recorded torturing and killing them and gave the video to US journalists... so that's why we were there, to neutralize this particular group, shockingly though the intel was inaccurate and they had far more soldiers than the 20 originally reported... And we ended up essentially falling into their trap by doing exactly what they wanted us to do... as with almost any mission we had 3 POA's and when we called in air support all available drones in the area were otherwise engaged but luckily for us a meaningless aircraft was 5 minutes away and no matter what your worthless opinions are about the aircraft this Warthog absolutely had a LEGENDARY PILOT behind the stick and we all made it home to our families that day while simultaneously making sure the enemy did not not... so I will continue to exaggerate about this worthless outdated piece of shit aircraft because I can, and deservedly so.

@weshoward1984 No. What saved you and 12 other marines is CAS in an era where you weren't swarmed by drones. The a10 in a modern conflict is nothing more than a drone magnet.
I agree with not scrapping it because it can still be useful in some conflict somewhere and it can certainly save lives there. But it is very much outdated and to be replaced for modern engagements.

My job in the Army was a lowly driver. Our favorite vehicle was an OD Green Checker. When you turned the key, it cranked. When you stepped on the brake it stopped. When you stepped on the accelerator, it sped up. I'm told that same trait is why the Warthog is loved.

Army medic assigned to an infantry platoon here. The A10 is easily the most beautiful sight you can see when you’re pinned down. That BRRRRRRT is the greatest sound I’ve ever heard and yes it’s 100% possible to get hard from just a sound.

That sounds intentional... in all honesty the A-10 is ANCIENT and ignoring cost effectiveness drones seem to have taken over the role.
Hell ask Afghans or Iraqies how they feel about drones loitering overhead.
On the ground I bet the A-10 has a much greater moral effect than any drone though.

I watched a pair of A-10s doing maneuvers over Maryland about 30 years ago. I was mesmerized watching them climb into the clouds and dive back out somewhere else. It was really cool.

my airforce brother in law explained the A10 to me this way ; while A10 pilots might love them the AF command doesn't really understand close air support, so they want a more expensive toy they think can do the same job. the Marines would love to have it IF they could fly them off of a ship to support amphibious landings. the Navy could use them IF they could operate off of a ship , but they would rather use their carrier deck space for other planes. The Army are restricted from using fixed wing aircraft, so they can only fly choppers. So the people who want them can't use them and the ones who have them don't want them.

You know, the weird thing is that the A-10 would be ideal for flying off of carriers, due to its wide wingspan. Not designed for the purpose, but I imagine an engineer could adapt it.
Never going to happen though. The Navy doesn’t like single role aircraft anymore.

Army Desert Storm Vet here- the A10 will always have a special place in my heart. They aren't the prettiest bird in the sky, but you definitely felt better seeing them in the sky, knowing they were a kind of guardian angel. Legendary airplane, which will never truly be replaced IMHO

I’ll admit I might have a little A-10 bias but retiring it makes zero sense when you look at real world use. A forward based A-10 patrol costs around 1.5 to 1.7 million per month and can intercept multiple boats per sortie. Do the same thing with MQ-9s using Hellfires and you’re easily at 27 million plus per month just in missiles. Drones are great for precision strikes, but for persistent patrol, surveillance, and high volume interdiction, the A-10 is cheaper, more flexible, and better suited. Retiring it isn’t modernization, it’s throwing money away.

I've only ever seen the A10s at airshows and have never heard the cannon in person. But to hear those GE turbofan engines and watch them do their attack runs was one of the coolest things I ever saw at an airshow. Plus being able to get up close to them and actually touch the 30mm, just awesome

As a veteran of Iraq, Its a huge morale boost. I've seen Kiowas and A10s do gun runs. Nothing makes you feel like going into a beast mode like an A10 raining death on the enemy. They can drop JDAMs. A JDAM coming down is fucking scary, of course we were way too fucking close. But I guess any plane can drop one. Me and the squad leader were standing out of the turret of our Bradley because they were going to drop one on a house that was so full of IED making shit and probably booby trapped. We thought we were far enough away. But debris flying past us made us look at eachother and both going "OH SHIT" at the same time and dropping back in. There is something really important about a plane that can take so much abuse like the A10 can. Which isn't so much for SAM or Air to Air weapons but for small arms fire from their role as close ground support. Yeah, it can be done with a heli, but the A10 can loiter longer and re-arm and reengage far quicker than a heli. Drones are great, and their role is going to expand in the future. But drones can be jammed, and the ones that are jam resistant are connected with fiber optic, which limits the range. Also, drones aren't good at determining who is and isn't a legitimate target. So they run the risk of killing non-combatants as we saw with Obama's use in hunting down terrorists.

当然，直升机也能执行这类任务，但 A-10 的滞空时间更长，而且重装弹药、重返战场的速度，远比直升机快得多。
无人机确实很出色，未来的作战用途也会越来越广。但无人机存在被干扰的风险，就算是抗干扰型号，也得靠光纤传输信号，这就大大限制了它的作战半径。
此外，无人机在判别目标是否具有合法打击资格方面，能力也欠佳。就像奥巴马执政时期美军用无人机猎杀恐怖分子那样，无人机很容易造成误伤平民的风险。

There was a joke going around after the first time they tried to retire the hog. The Air Force said they no longer wanted the A-10. The Army said they'd take them and the A-10 pilots and ground crew could become part of the Army. The Air Force personnel were horrified at the thought of joining the Army and the Air Force kept the A-10.

Disallowing the Army from having fixed wing aircraft was always a dumb decision. The Air Force, since its inception in 1947, has always disdained close air support missions (eww, we might get our fingernails dirty!). Let the Air Force have the air superiority mission and the strategic bombing mission (which is all the Air Force really wants anyway) and let the Army have the A-10. Marines too, if they want it!

When the had A-10s stationed in Indiana they occasionally flew over my house as a kid. They also would play games with local fishermen doing mock gun runs on boats in the river. Just hearing those engines brings back fond memories

The A-10 is not what the media has made it out to be. Its an outdated platform that was designed for an era that doesn't exist anymore. Its ground attack record is completely outpaced by the F16.

As a private, I got to personally witness a strafing pass from a flight of A-10s. We had an old station wagon on the range that was picked out as a target they could expend their ammo on, since they didn't want the hassle of going home loaded after the ex.
It was spectacular.
We later went out and loaded up the remnants BY HAND into the truck, as the car was reduced to pieces.

It never ceases to amaze me how folks get so rude and acrimonious online simply because the person they are talking to cannot break their nose. Take the risk of threat away from a conversation and the true character of a person is demonstrated very quickly. Love or hate the A-10, it has preformed admirably for the US military for decades and will remain beloved by most Americans for the role it has played in force projection and as a symbol of military battlefield might.

Make no mistake, the Airforce wants to get rid of this plane because it's cheap. It's a lot harder to inflate your budget for unnecessary funds with cheap airplanes on your books.

My home state Maryland, operated a fleet of them with their Air National Guard. Unfortunately, ours were all retired in the fall of this year (2025). However the last one was flown to Hagerstown to be displayed in a small museum at the factory where they were made. I will miss seeing them randomly flying around my state

I agree with not scrapping it because it can still be useful in some conflict somewhere and it can certainly save lives there. But it is very much outdated and to be replaced for modern engagements.

That sounds intentional... in all honesty the A-10 is ANCIENT and ignoring cost effectiveness drones seem to have taken over the role.
Hell ask Afghans or Iraqies how they feel about drones loitering overhead.
On the ground I bet the A-10 has a much greater moral effect than any drone though.

I watched a pair of A-10s doing maneuvers over Maryland about 30 years ago. I was mesmerized watching them climb into the clouds and dive back out somewhere else. It was really cool.

my airforce brother in law explained the A10 to me this way ; while A10 pilots might love them the AF command doesn't really understand close air support, so they want a more expensive toy they think can do the same job. the Marines would love to have it IF they could fly them off of a ship to support amphibious landings. the Navy could use them IF they could operate off of a ship , but they would rather use their carrier deck space for other planes. The Army are restricted from using fixed wing aircraft, so they can only fly choppers. So the people who want them can't use them and the ones who have them don't want them.

You know, the weird thing is that the A-10 would be ideal for flying off of carriers, due to its wide wingspan. Not designed for the purpose, but I imagine an engineer could adapt it.
Never going to happen though. The Navy doesn’t like single role aircraft anymore.

Army Desert Storm Vet here- the A10 will always have a special place in my heart. They aren't the prettiest bird in the sky, but you definitely felt better seeing them in the sky, knowing they were a kind of guardian angel. Legendary airplane, which will never truly be replaced IMHO

I’ll admit I might have a little A-10 bias but retiring it makes zero sense when you look at real world use. A forward based A-10 patrol costs around 1.5 to 1.7 million per month and can intercept multiple boats per sortie. Do the same thing with MQ-9s using Hellfires and you’re easily at 27 million plus per month just in missiles. Drones are great for precision strikes, but for persistent patrol, surveillance, and high volume interdiction, the A-10 is cheaper, more flexible, and better suited. Retiring it isn’t modernization, it’s throwing money away.

I've only ever seen the A10s at airshows and have never heard the cannon in person. But to hear those GE turbofan engines and watch them do their attack runs was one of the coolest things I ever saw at an airshow. Plus being able to get up close to them and actually touch the 30mm, just awesome

As a veteran of Iraq, Its a huge morale boost. I've seen Kiowas and A10s do gun runs. Nothing makes you feel like going into a beast mode like an A10 raining death on the enemy. They can drop JDAMs. A JDAM coming down is fucking scary, of course we were way too fucking close. But I guess any plane can drop one. Me and the squad leader were standing out of the turret of our Bradley because they were going to drop one on a house that was so full of IED making shit and probably booby trapped. We thought we were far enough away. But debris flying past us made us look at eachother and both going "OH SHIT" at the same time and dropping back in. There is something really important about a plane that can take so much abuse like the A10 can. Which isn't so much for SAM or Air to Air weapons but for small arms fire from their role as close ground support. Yeah, it can be done with a heli, but the A10 can loiter longer and re-arm and reengage far quicker than a heli. Drones are great, and their role is going to expand in the future. But drones can be jammed, and the ones that are jam resistant are connected with fiber optic, which limits the range. Also, drones aren't good at determining who is and isn't a legitimate target. So they run the risk of killing non-combatants as we saw with Obama's use in hunting down terrorists.

A-10 有个极为关键的优势，就是它的抗毁伤能力极强。这种强悍并非为了抵御地对空导弹或空对空武器，
而是适配它近距离对地支援的作战定位，专门用来防御轻武器的射击。
当然，直升机也能执行这类任务，但 A-10 的滞空时间更长，而且重装弹药、重返战场的速度，远比直升机快得多。
无人机确实很出色，未来的作战用途也会越来越广。但无人机存在被干扰的风险，就算是抗干扰型号，也得靠光纤传输信号，这就大大限制了它的作战半径。
此外，无人机在判别目标是否具有合法打击资格方面，能力也欠佳。就像奥巴马执政时期美军用无人机猎杀恐怖分子那样，无人机很容易造成误伤平民的风险。

There was a joke going around after the first time they tried to retire the hog. The Air Force said they no longer wanted the A-10. The Army said they'd take them and the A-10 pilots and ground crew could become part of the Army. The Air Force personnel were horrified at the thought of joining the Army and the Air Force kept the A-10.

Disallowing the Army from having fixed wing aircraft was always a dumb decision. The Air Force, since its inception in 1947, has always disdained close air support missions (eww, we might get our fingernails dirty!). Let the Air Force have the air superiority mission and the strategic bombing mission (which is all the Air Force really wants anyway) and let the Army have the A-10. Marines too, if they want it!

When the had A-10s stationed in Indiana they occasionally flew over my house as a kid. They also would play games with local fishermen doing mock gun runs on boats in the river. Just hearing those engines brings back fond memories

The A-10 is not what the media has made it out to be. Its an outdated platform that was designed for an era that doesn't exist anymore. Its ground attack record is completely outpaced by the F16.

As a private, I got to personally witness a strafing pass from a flight of A-10s. We had an old station wagon on the range that was picked out as a target they could expend their ammo on, since they didn't want the hassle of going home loaded after the ex.
It was spectacular.
We later went out and loaded up the remnants BY HAND into the truck, as the car was reduced to pieces.

It never ceases to amaze me how folks get so rude and acrimonious online simply because the person they are talking to cannot break their nose. Take the risk of threat away from a conversation and the true character of a person is demonstrated very quickly. Love or hate the A-10, it has preformed admirably for the US military for decades and will remain beloved by most Americans for the role it has played in force projection and as a symbol of military battlefield might.

Make no mistake, the Airforce wants to get rid of this plane because it's cheap. It's a lot harder to inflate your budget for unnecessary funds with cheap airplanes on your books.

My home state Maryland, operated a fleet of them with their Air National Guard. Unfortunately, ours were all retired in the fall of this year (2025). However the last one was flown to Hagerstown to be displayed in a small museum at the factory where they were made. I will miss seeing them randomly flying around my state
