The rest of the world was relieved when Trump was held to one term and replaced with a sane elder statesman like Biden. The rest of the world assumed that the American electorate learned its lesson and started to re-engage with the US.

It seems they did not learn their lesson, or they did, and they liked it. Either way, the US has become a horrible hostile pariah state that the rest of the world would rather have nothing to do with.

Thanks to Trump, we now know that this is nothing new in the USA.

It's just a wonder that it hasn't happened before!

Here in Britain, and many countries that were former staunch allies, the headlines would all be pointing out how utterly useless they are, given that they can be ignored or ripped up at the whim of just one man!
Even if, as seems increasingly unlikely, the USA is still a NATO member at that point, the massive amount of arms sales that America has benefitted from for decades will never be seen again - why would anyone trust a country that has withdrawn support from an ally that they swore to protect? even gifting their enemy with an intelligence benefit by withholding vital satellite coverage and information gathered elsewhere!
The rest of the world has now seen the grubby underbelly of the American political system, and I very much doubt that they, as a country, will ever be trusted again.

They're just not important. This is all serious stuff and we don't have time to let the USA's midlife crisis put world affairs on hold.
What's happening is the great rebalancing - strengthening of existing international relationships, the first tentative steps made to forming entirely new ones, and softening of strained relationships between traditional enemies… and the Americans aren't invited.
If they ever do get their shit together and decide they want to re-engage like adults, they will be coming back to a political landscape that looks markedly different from today. They will have to adjust - quickly - to their new reality: One country among many, travelling in the passenger seat and needing to earn, from scratch, the respect and trust they formerly enjoyed.
This lesson in humility will not be easily learned by the Americans - but learn it they will, because they will really have no choice.

No, it's gone - in the short term and the medium term, at least. Perhaps in some decades, perhaps a century, things will get better but the thing about reputations is they take years to build up but only seconds to break. If they think the world is going to sit there waiting for the big brave Americans to take their brain medicine and then forgive, forget, and move on they're in for a massive surprise.
There's an American expression I really enjoy: “Shit, or get off the pot.”
In other words, do your business or get out of the way because other people have business they're wanting to do as well.
The USA once held a position of respect and leadership on the world stage. It abdicated from that position, and nobody's going to keep the seat warm awaiting their illustrious return. They're just not important. This is all serious stuff and we don't have time to let the USA's midlife crisis put world affairs on hold.
What's happening is the great rebalancing - strengthening of existing international relationships, the first tentative steps made to forming entirely new ones, and softening of strained relationships between traditional enemies… and the Americans aren't invited.
If they ever do get their shit together and decide they want to re-engage like adults, they will be coming back to a political landscape that looks markedly different from today. They will have to adjust - quickly - to their new reality: One country among many, travelling in the passenger seat and needing to earn, from scratch, the respect and trust they formerly enjoyed.
This lesson in humility will not be easily learned by the Americans - but learn it they will, because they will really have no choice.

We have violate that trust in such ways that we do not deserve to be trusted. We have destroyed the relationships we have had with our longest and most faithful allies.
It is like a couple who, after years of marriage one spouse cheats on the other. After breaking off the affair and working to rebuild the relationship, the other spouse agrees to reconcile and move forward. Then just about the time they have really begun to rebuild that trust, the spouse cheats again, only this time becomes abusive, beating and bullying, humiliating and attacking their forgiving partner.
Why on earth would the spouse EVER trust their former partner again?

See, an enormous part of the USA’s “world standing” was your soft power. People wanted to move to your country, and develop there, including to develop ideas they couldn't in their home countries because of corruption and authoritarianism. You got the best minds of the world coming to work for you.
Welp, tRump destroyed exactly that, and there's no turning back.
These minds are going to China now, if the Chinese are smart enough to capitalize the trend. In this scenario they won't need to get Taiwan or Sibera by force, they’ll get them through investments and money, meantime sucking Russia dry of its resources. If they are smart enough, all of Asia will line up to them. Asia, with its young population and technical boom. And see, the reason why they are the only empire of the ancient that still stands, is because they are smart.
