Lights, front, side profile and even rear - is bad designed. They could have improved on design template of Land Rover that they used as a base here - but instead ended up screwing it. This does not imply luxury - there is no understatement like in RR design. It is more like a kid crying to get attention. Chinese quality is real though, nothing against quality and tech.

The thing is, they started to build good cars too late. All the design choices according to regulations etc. have been already chewed on. So whatever they try, it will resemble an already existing car. And also some manufacturers do it deliberately to give you the ability to purchase a car that looks like your dream car but you won't be able to buy. Like xiaomi SUV that looks like a Ferrari Purosangue. But on thing to concider is, established brands hire European designers, who have been working on known brands. Just like Hyundai established the "N" branding with the help of a BMW-Engineer. Not that they couldn't do it by themselves, but by being from Herman that man had a lot of connection to regulatory institutions etc. I actually like "weird" designs. It is refreshing to see something completely different.

Dubai resident here; driving a mix of Chinese EVs and legacy luxury cars. The Yangwang U8 is the most expensive Chinese vehicle in the local market, at $150-180K. It has become a bit of a status symbol because people recognize its capabilities and specs. Have recently seen the Queen of Jordan driving this car, and regularly see UAE royals and entourages driving these cars, in addition to their G-Class, Patrol, Land Cruiser and Range Rover / Defender stalwarts. This shows that Chinese vehicles are gaining acceptance and people are willing to judge them by their merits (rather than badge prestige). Chinese brands are gaining market share very quickly here, and we are still in very early innings. My Xpeng G9P is my daily driver and I like it quite a bit.

Chinese cars are only so cheap because they have lured a lot of engineers and copied a lot from western so they did not need to develop as much. If the companies in China would have to start from scratch and produce genuine cars, cars would be as expensive as from US or EU brands.

No mention that in one of it's press showcases of the floating ability the car actually sank. Also only expect it to last a couple of years before the rust starts to show and tbh a couple of years is being generous. The sister company BYD has a bad track record for their vehicles going rusty.

I went to China last summer and their car market is so far ahead of the rest of the world is crazy. Just imagine walking into an Apple Store and seeing an absolute gorgeous set of cars on display. The product quality is so good and for the price nothing comes close.

@mixswist a electric car has A LOT less parts to actually get it moving. the drivetrain is literally direct-drive electric motors, no transmission, no driveshaft, no "engine oil".. maybe some suspension compenents may need to be replaced as they wear out, but those are easily manufactured by many different ones..
a lot of ICE cars are getting harder and harder to find parts, especially after the whole cash4clunkers literally smashed down a bunch of cars instead of sending them to junkyard lots so people can get parts...
its a new world, and ICE cars unfortunately will be going away...as a lover of manual transmission cars...it makes me sad, but i need to grow up and accept reality that ICE cars will become a luxury hobby
