I've long considered the MiG-23 to really be the counterpart to the F-4 in terms of its role. The fact that it came out a decade after the Phantom II, when the Americans had moved on to the next generation of fighters partly explains why its combat record suffers. If the F-4 had to routinely take on MiG-29s and Su-27s, its record might also suffer.

The Mig-23's Combat record is terrible yes, but When facing it's actual western counterparts not as bad as it would seem. Against the F-16, F-15 and especially the F-14 it was blown out of the sky, however these are 4th Gen Air superiority fighters up against a 3rd Gen Fighter/Interceptor. When facing the 3rd Gen Fighters like the F-4 Phantom, the F-5 Tiger II or the Mirage F-1 its Kill/Loss Record is not that bad, but even though it's still not great, it did score some victories against them and held it's own at least. I think to judge the MiG-23 to have to Judge it against its ACTUAL pairs after all the F-4 Phantom and the Mirage F-1 both got shot down when they faced the 4th Gen F-15. the F-4 also had losses against the 2nd Gen MiG-21 and even the 1st Gen MiG-17 but it isn't Terrible fighter either.

@petriew2018 I was only talking about the MiG-23's combat record and the fact that while poor it's not as bad as some people seem to think and The only upgrade package that they offered for the MiG-23 was the ability to fire R-27 missiles which no one bothered with because the airfrx itself was too limited for modern combat needs. Mig-23 was built to hunt B-52s, not enemy fighters. It was almost never called upon to do it's actual job. It was also intended to work as part of a ground control network, integrated with AAA and SAMs. This upper level of organization was almost never seen in the client countries.
I've also seen a few interviews with Israeli pilots. They seemed to think that the Mig-23 was very dangerous. They said Mig vs F-16 was a push, with the F-16 turning better, and the Mig superior in the vertical. The IAF destroyed more Mig-23s in air to air combat than anybody, so they probably have a good handle on what they were up against.

Fun fact, most countries that operated both MiG-21 and MiG-23 retired their 23s long before the 21s. The Romanian 21s after significant upgrades flew till 2023.

The F-4 was a disaster until they added a cannon to it. It was a humongous oversight because they thought missiles would do everything you needed.
Then they ran out of missiles in combat which is about as big of a disaster as a fighter can have. No armament in the middle of a dogfight.

The Mig-23's Combat record is terrible yes, but When facing it's actual western counterparts not as bad as it would seem. Against the F-16, F-15 and especially the F-14 it was blown out of the sky, however these are 4th Gen Air superiority fighters up against a 3rd Gen Fighter/Interceptor. When facing the 3rd Gen Fighters like the F-4 Phantom, the F-5 Tiger II or the Mirage F-1 its Kill/Loss Record is not that bad, but even though it's still not great, it did score some victories against them and held it's own at least. I think to judge the MiG-23 to have to Judge it against its ACTUAL pairs after all the F-4 Phantom and the Mirage F-1 both got shot down when they faced the 4th Gen F-15. the F-4 also had losses against the 2nd Gen MiG-21 and even the 1st Gen MiG-17 but it isn't Terrible fighter either.

this kind of deliberately misses one of the fighters most severe drawbacks : complete inability to be upgraded with the times. The f-4 and Mirage's were continuously upgraded to keep the relevant frontline fighters into the 1990s.... the 23 was already been phased out in the 1980s

@petriew2018 I was only talking about the MiG-23's combat record and the fact that while poor it's not as bad as some people seem to think and The only upgrade package that they offered for the MiG-23 was the ability to fire R-27 missiles which no one bothered with because the airfrx itself was too limited for modern combat needs. The MiG-23 was severely limited in many areas compared to it's Pairs.

The F4 was absolutely not a dogfighter. It didn't even GET A GUN until much later into its life. It was more of an interceptor, made to go fast and shoot missiles from a long way away, paired with the ability to carry a shit load of explosives to be dropped

Mig-23 was built to hunt B-52s, not enemy fighters. It was almost never called upon to do it's actual job. It was also intended to work as part of a ground control network, integrated with AAA and SAMs. This upper level of organization was almost never seen in the client countries.
I've also seen a few interviews with Israeli pilots. They seemed to think that the Mig-23 was very dangerous. They said Mig vs F-16 was a push, with the F-16 turning better, and the Mig superior in the vertical. The IAF destroyed more Mig-23s in air to air combat than anybody, so they probably have a good handle on what they were up against.

Fun fact, most countries that operated both MiG-21 and MiG-23 retired their 23s long before the 21s. The Romanian 21s after significant upgrades flew till 2023.

The F-4 was a disaster until they added a cannon to it. It was a humongous oversight because they thought missiles would do everything you needed.
Then they ran out of missiles in combat which is about as big of a disaster as a fighter can have. No armament in the middle of a dogfight.
