The president of one of the largest public dealership groups, Sonic Automotive, said on a recent earnings call that automakers are "not going to sit back and lose billions and billions of dollars" due to tariff costs. So far they seem to have been eating the costs of trade barriers--prices have not risen much since they were introduced. But both automakers and dealer groups say that is unsustainable.

Why Tariffs Are Becoming Unsustainable For Automakers

@devonvictor3210
Tariffs are the felons way of robbing the American people. All the money is going to him. Some just are not smart enough to understand what a Tariff is.

@SellerReports
Ironic since car dealer owners voted for Trump

@ronkirk5099
The U.S. auto industry has an international supply chain for parts and raw materials and when those pieces are subject to tariff/tax, it is going to make cars more expensive. Trump was in such a rush to punish other countries, I guess he overlooked this very basic fact. You'd expect better from a self-professed so-called 'business genius', but then again, he was a mediocre college student.

@jkbasa34
The cost could rise between 2,809-3000. But if I recall the prices were going up before, but at that time a “chip shortage” was to blame. But when chips were being produced, prices remained at its inflated rate

@sblsbl7600
Wages will have to double to sustain these prices. $122,000 for a pickup means only the rich will buy a pickup.

@tksaksmf
for those who still don’t know, US tariffs are paid by US people and US importers not the foreign manufacturers. remember that

@kevinguise5024
Congratulations. Trump just raised the price of cars by 15% with his latest tarriffs. Before Trump was president you could get a truck for 55K. Now you pay over 100K for the same truck. Trump has enriched himself, but I'm sure some of that will trickle down to the average american, because he says so.

@JurassicJake92
Oh yeah, the dealerships are really concerned about rising prices for customers haha. They are professional scam artists who markup vehicles and create crazy financing schemes and extended warranties to squeeze even more money out of car buyers. More states should change the law and allow for sales direct from the manufacturer.

@nin10dough6d-for
Is this why the dealership didn't bother asking if I had a valid driver license before a test drive? They were super * to get my business. I've purchased 6 cars from dealerships in the past, and I've never seen seen such an eager salesman. It threw me a red flag, especially considering how I was buying an on-brand model.

@mtljbc6568
I don't get it, why we have to pay more if other countries pay tariffs.

@cas5247
This news report not the truth. The truth is automakers raised the prices during COVID and got record profits. They refuse to lower prices due to corporate greed. All the US automakers are loosing billions on EV sales and are trying to cover losses by raising prices on gas autos. They are trying to deflect by saying tariffs. They refuse to build lower trim cars because there is more profit on loaded trucks and SUVs.

I aint buying a new vehicle with these prices, and I use to buy a new one every three years. I'm my fifth year now, and I bet I keep this one for at least 6 and possibly longer.

@scott2862
The point is they are supposed to be made here if they are sold here. All the other brands are built here made with parts made here in the US and have no tariffs.
If they are based and built here and only say painted in Canada or something similar they face no tariffs.
All the other brands have been buy here for 50 years to avoid the added tariffs. Like legit most foreign brands sold here are built here.

@TheJensss
Why are cars constantly maid less and less durable and harder to repair? People are tired of buying expensive low quality cars

@grantlingley1385
You mention Toyotas Investment in EV Factories in the US but if we are to believe recent news, Toyota is in partnership with KIA on that larger factory and have since chosen to relocate in Canada as a result of taxes but likely the chaos and Turmoil that has surrounded all things Trump.

@stopabuslane
Americans have lost the ability to create a news story now. They just state something obvious is happening without joining any dots as to why.

@TheDailyScan247
They have the option of higher prices, just as the American people have the option of not buying them, which will then drive down cost due to no return on their investments, as the cars sit longer and longer with no buyers.  They'll be in trouble if the American people switch from a consumer identity to a principled one.

@KD-pf9yi
Should go down with the fact that they no longer have to meet stringent CAFE standards and by the fact that we are no longer subsidizing the EV transition that nobody wanted.  And the fact that the average new car price is 50K that is by  choice, people by more car than they need.  Also if they were to remove the dealership layer and sell direct like Tesla the price of the same vehicle would drop by another few thousand dollars easily.

Elections have consequences. America elected a convicted felon as President, we should not be suprised.

@ChristopheOccitanie
Tariffs are designed to protect economic activity in the United States and create value for American workers.
Some companies show that this strategy can work: Tesla is now able to manufacture almost 100% in the U.S. while staying competitive.

@atoz09093
Too many people are buying vehicles they can't afford. Borrowing money to buy a depreciating asset is a recipe for staying poor. I'm hoping to never pay more than $25k for a vehicle again. That basically means I'll be in the used car market.

@Handle8701
If tariffs are becoming unsustainable for automakers, the simplest antidote for regular people is still the same: buy a well‑maintained used car. You don’t need to worship at the altar of the “latest model year.” Ninety‑nine percent of new vehicles aren’t transportation—they’re financial instruments engineered for bankers.

And it doesn’t stop at cars. Mortgages, homeowners insurance, auto insurance, maintenance costs, and property taxes all follow the same scxt: prices float on artificial valuations while incomes stay chained to reality. It’s an economy calibrated for the banking sector, not the people who actually earn wages.
The system thrives on attrition. The more we chase the next shiny thing, the more we feed the machine. Most folks don’t realize their financial lens has been narrowed for them, and the bankers are more than happy to keep it that way.

@MattSeabolt
The problem: they're profitable to the tune of 7.5 percent..... But unless they get to 10 they're going to screw over the customer? Are the American people growing at a 7.5 clip per year? Or is the middle class being crushed ? The country's gone bankrupt. We need other sources of revenue via tariffs or we can continue to crush the American people with taxes? Or excusing unbridled capitalism. Time to reel it in and stop screwing over the American consumer.

@damnsnowflakes2403
Have car prices gone down since the “chip shortage”? No. It’s all a big lie. Let that new junk rot on the lot

@cme365
Or people could open supportive companies for automotive industry. No tarriffs on made in USA. It's real simple, why give jobs to Mexico & Canada when Americans buy the autos.

@B86432
21% inflation from Biden 11 interest rate hikes .....that's why cars cost so much don't let the fake news make you think different

@BlueMax717
Thats the way it should be.  You move your operation to Mexico to take advantage of loop holes and cheap labor then you should pay for it. If you're losing so much money that you increase the prices and people stop buying your vehicles, then move your operation to America.  Simple as that.  Or people can pay the fee to drive around in your low quality Mexican built hunk of crap with the transmissions falling apart.

@Th4TGuy1984
America is screwed no matter who is in charge.. can’t imagine putting my trust in humans or a political party thinking they can fix human problems lol

@SuperChunk1775
what ever, Americans love to buy cars as they get bored with them only a small portion need to buy a new car as there needs grow. stop buying and they will suffer and reduce there prices

@BrocKelley
Automakers have been making vehicles larger and more expensive for decades, knowing full well it would shift the market more toward used vehicles and shrink their market share while maximizing their profits. This is a great political move to shift blame to Trump, and makes sense for CNBC to be okay capturing it this way since they lean left and their parent company also owns car companies, but this plan existed long before he was president, certainly long before the Tariffs.

@Rocketdagg09
Maybe lower the price of the good you’re making insane amounts of money on? Or maybe offer small economy cars with less features like the days of old? No one cares about shareholders or their billions in profits. The fact you’re making a profit is more than enough reason to keep selling.

@PureHokkaido
Nobody is forcing people to buy new cars. Maintain an existing car rather than blowing money to have the latest and greatest.

How many times do I have to say it?? STOP BUYING NEW CARS. Put the pressure on EVERYONE involved to keep the costs down. The ONLY effective way to show them that their prices are too high is to STOP PAYING THEM. Period!
My daily driver car is 31 years old, my main pickup is 16 years old. I’ve never bought a new car in my life and never will. I have zero debt, zero car payment, my expenditure on my vehicles is not even close to what it would be if I had a car payment every month. It’s time for you all to smarten up and stop buying new vehicles. That is the ONLY way to motivate everyone involved to change their ways.

Fuch the dealers and manufacturers. They’ve been ripping people off selling garbage vehicles for decades. They all come with built in recalls and then some that come through over the months and years of ownership. Overpriced garbage.
Even Toyota is recalling tens to hundreds of thousands of vehicles.
This is all propaganda to raise the prices and blame someone else for their horrible products they’re losing millions into billions on for building junk.

@DaveBrawn-y1l
Crazy that tariffs are higher on Mexican and Canadian cars than Japanese especially when most of what is built in Mexico and Canada are GMC, Fords and Chrysler products American companies.

@jimmclain3093
Didn't the supreme Court just strike down the tariffs? So if the dealers do raise prices because of tariffs they are just putting in more margin for themselves

Why don’t you talk about dealer show added thousands dollars of  accessories that no one need and force people to buy it

While I do really want to. I may have to buy a rivian since I wouldn't have to deal with any dealerships making the already super high costs even worse.
