I’ve been noticing a lot more new Chinese EV brands popping up recently, such as MG, JAECOO / Omoda, BYD, Xpeng etc.
I've also noticed the rise of Chinese EVs in London like the New TfL buses, The new London Taxis etc
Just wondering what people actually think about them? Would you consider buying one, or do you still prefer the more established brands like Tesla, VW etc?
If you own one, what do you think of it? Are you happy with your decision?
btw Please try not to talk about PoIitics, I think its forbidden on this sub.

Pretty good anecdote to be fair, cant argue with that!

I don't have any brand loyalty and I think Musk is a d*ck, but I bought a M3 performance in 2019 when there was literally nothing close to it on the market. I've done 80k miles in it, it's never been out of sport mode (and I've got a heavy right foot,) I've not been bothered about careful charging etc. I often use it more like a van, filling it with toolboxes, and I have a roof rack on it that I've carried ladders, timber and scaffolding on. In the 7 years I've owned it, the only issue was a drivers seat occupancy sensor which was changed under warranty.. and that's it. Nothing in 7 years. The original brake pads still have about 7mm on them. It's never been serviced. And as a bonus I had free charging at work for the first 5 years. Anecdotal I know, but I don't know what more you could expect from a vehicle? Runs flawlessly for 7+ years, does 0-60 in 3 seconds, practical, and totally reliable. Over-hyped shit my arse!

if u dont like them because of the owner, i completely understand, but the actual vehicles themselves are pretty good, ive been in a few including one from 2014 and its unbelieable how far ahead it was for its time. nothing was close. they are starting to catch up now though.
another USP they have is their supercharger network which is a major advantage over the spotty unreliable public ones their rivals have

What was far ahead for it's time? Like, what exactly?
The idea that traditional manufacturers are playing catch up at this point is also silly, what are they still behind on exactly? I've driven several brands of electric vehicles (company cars) and currently drive a bmw i4, it's an actual car, solid, dependable, a pleasure to drive. My Tesla was like a computer with wheels., it felt cheap and plastic, I couldn't wait to get out of it.

Tesla built a car and a charging network that was integrated from the beginning (let's not forget that in Europe it was competing against the Chamedo Leaf and AC Zoe initially).
And whilst it's never achieved full self driving, there's still many companies that can't do a decent crack at auto cruise on motorway (MG).
Tesla also have better overall packaging (frunk, interior space, deep boots), better efficiency and typically better charge curves.
They also were one of the first to bring LFP batteries to the wider market, which is a good improvement on cobalt -chem.
If you want to see bad implementation, see Stellantis, early ID cars, Audi/Porsche drivetrains, iPace unreliability etc etc
Tesla cars aren't perfect, but they have moved the game on for electric vehicles. I prefer Hyundai/Kia products myself.

I recall the Chief Executive of Ford recently described his visit to Chinese EV manufacturing factories as "terrifying to find out how far we are behind".
Time will tell if Western car manufacturers can change to compete with these more advanced products or whether, like the French wine makers did with the New World wines a few decades ago, they will retreat behind a torrent of sneering and disinformation until one day they wake up to find they have been left in the dust.

yea your right, apparently there is some Subsisides by the Chinese Govs though so its not all natural, i read a lot about that online

Subsidies are only part of the picture, there has been a gradual move for European manufacturers to ignore the cheap run about market. The majority of people don't drive for the 'love of driving', they just want something which will get them from A to B and not breakdown too often.

It’s also mindset. Western companies live and die by quarterly results, and annual earnings calls. There’s no room for a long term strategy (over generalisation).
Many Asian companies are willing to forego short term returns to build long term value, and it shows. They plan for 5 years, 10 years, even more.

Less about the consumer, more about the worker. If nobody is buying the cars you make everyday because a foreign country is able to undercut pricing because their government subsidizes manufacturers, you're out of the job. The UK auto industry supports 800,000 jobs, that's a lot of jobs potentially affected.

If the price was 10~ different and the cars were equally as good, I'd love to buy a British car, then European, then Chinese in order of preference. But they're not, and it's not even close.

Also, less cars made in the UK, lower demand for third party companies to sell stuff for car manufacturers.
I like what Canada was proposing, lowering the tarrifs on Chinese EVs, but with a plan to manufacture these cars in Canada

Absolute scenes when western capitalists erect their own Iron Curtain to protect their financial interests.
The coming century is going to be so weird, particularly for western chauvinists.

We have to, because much like East Germany, this time, we are the ones who have lagged behind.
“But one must say simply: under capitalism on a national scale it is impossible to carry out production according to plan… They cannot carry out industry or agriculture or transport according to plan. Under capitalism the city must devour the village. Private property hinders them…” - Stalin
I don't fully agree with this quote, or Stalin, of course. But I believe we are seeing the limitations of our system, writ increasingly large.

Bad comparison. France still dominates in the wine export market in terms of value, followed by Italy and Spain. No new world producer comes close.
Edit: To add some data, since this is being downvoted, in 2024 French wine exports were worth €11.7bil, Italian wine exports €8.1bil, Spanish wine exports €3bil.
The largest new world producer claimed here to be 'leaving France in the dust' was Australia, with wine exports worth €1.6bil, followed by Chile on €1.5bil and the USA on €1.2bil.
Source.

I saw a video that said that China managed to get so far ahead because of its ability to produce batteries. I believe they can produce about 75% of a battery with the resources that they have in China whereas most other countries can only make about 20% of the components. I’m not sure how accurate this is though but apparently it’s how China got the monopoly on batteries.
Electrical_Swing8166
CATL and BYD between them have something like 55% of the global EV battery market share. Even non-Chinese EV makers like Tesla basically have to use Chinese batteries. It’s definitely a big edge

It's the whole network of suppliers and the scale they can work to for domestic customers. They can become one of the largest electric car manufacturers in the world without ever considering foreign markets. When they decide to address international markets they have the economies of scale to under cut everyone else. This isn't just for the car manufacturer but every supplier, you can find a massive sheet steel supplier, glass supplier and battery supplier all in the same city.
cbxcbx
China also plan hundreds of years ahead, and we plan only for the next election cycle. All the shit about "why should we cut carbon when China pumps so much out" does my head in. 100% China will be net zero before anyone else, they're just burning a lot in the meantime to get there.

Ford's action then seemed to be to double down on ICE cars and presumably hope for a protectionist US trade policy.
The West is becoming like China in the 1800s, seeing the limitations of its own economic system.. China by contrast has had the tool of big state reforms to blast through such limitations.

Yeah. I like the look of them and the quality inside seems really good but if I'm dropping 20-30k on one then I'd want an established brand with a network of mechanics that had worked on them previously and good access to parts. Maybe in 5 or 10 years when they're more of a known quantity.

This is it for me; they're unproven in terms of long term reliability.
That's why I've only bought Toyotas for the last 25+ years, and while I know they're far from perfect themselves, their reliability has been proven time and again to me, both in personal experience and in large scale review.
As and when another manufacturer of any country gets to that level, then I'll consider them.

I would always go with more established brands as they have spent decades building reliable service and parts networks. Some newer Chinese brands seem to struggle with parts availability. I've seen horror stories of simple repairs leaving a car off the road for months because manufacturers prioritise parts for new production over supporting existing customers.

I would absolutely buy one if I lived somewhere with the option to install my own electric charger.
Unfortunately that’s not possible for me right now and public electric chargers are too expensive so it’s not really worth it over keeping my petrol car.
The goal eventually though is to get somewhere where I can have a drive and my own charger and then get an electric car and after seeing and taking his one for a drive I’d definitely consider BYD.

yeah without somewhere to safely charge it at home any EV isnt really viable at the moment, not only is it a waste of time but Public charging is basically the same price as fuel!
Good luck with your goal, hopefully you can get a nice EV in the future

I have family in China and have ridden in many Chinese cars - absolutely I would.
Western car companies need to catch up rapidly with BYD on affordability and quality.
BYD will be the end of Tesla if Musk isn’t careful. Not that I’d be sad about it considering everything he’s done lately.
Just wait until Hongqi comes over here for the luxury market.

Same here, family in China I visit every few months and ride in many electric vehicles.
Insane how far ahead they are compared to the UK.
My cousin has a Nio and instead of charging it he just goes to a charging station, parks up, presses a button and the car reverses into the bay and a robot arm replaces the battery in a couple of minutes with a fully charged one.
You can get a brand new electric car that looks like a 40k car for like 13k.
xiaomi SU7 is like 22k and it looks like a Porsche type sports car.

Some of the electric BMW's with what looks like a big sticker on the front where the grill was look weird to me.

BYD I absolutely would, they’re a very impressive outfit, already a legit Tesla rival. The others I’m less fussed about. It’s true that EVs have turned cars into more like white goods and previously unknown brands can quickly gain momentum. I still remember when people laughed at (Korean, not Chinese) Samsung and LG TVs and considered them cheap and nasty… now look!

Also, less cars made in the UK, lower demand for third party companies to sell stuff for car manufacturers.
I like what Canada was proposing, lowering the tarrifs on Chinese EVs, but with a plan to manufacture these cars in Canada

Having been in a few BYDs as a passenger I can see them taking off given the spec and the price.
SaucyRagu96
Yep I sat in a BYD recently. And it felt like a nicer Tesla. Much cheaper as well. According to the driver/owner much more reliable than his other Tesla
hhfugrr3
Cheaper? We looked at BYD about a year ago and they wanted more than tesla for an equivalent car. Have they got much cheaper?

I’m not in the market for an electric vehicle but I think there is a lot of value to be had with these brands. I do however think that Jaecoo are incredibly ugly and I judge everyone that I see in one

personally i think the jaecoo that DOESNT look like a basketball / fishing net on the front looks quite nice, the boxy one. its the shape of a range rover and a temu rolls royce esque front end.
i definitely think it looks better than some of the new BMW monstrocities!!!!

Ive just took delivery of a Sealion 7 it’s excellent!

I thought you were just being silly with the name until I googled it. Still, not as bad as the Ora Funky Cat!
Sutty100
I thought you were joking with that name!

wait until you discover the ORA Funky Cat and the ORA Good cat!!!!
unfoortunately theyve been renamed now, at least in the UK market, but theyre cute funky cars for sure

Great choice, beautiful car and environmentally friendly & safe LFP battery too. The tech, performance and interior quality are really good for the price.

I would always go with more established brands as they have spent decades building reliable service and parts networks. Some newer Chinese brands seem to struggle with parts availability. I've seen horror stories of simple repairs leaving a car off the road for months because manufacturers prioritise parts for new production over supporting existing customers.
CabinetCalm1970
Struggling with parts availability isn't just limited to Chinese brands. Pretty much every marque, including European ones, are suffering with issues of parts availability.

Let’s be honest, it’s not much better with JLR.

My brother has a BYD. It’s really nice.

Compared to how Tesla looked they're way better lol. I'd have no issue owning one tbh

I see those jaecoo SUVs everywhere recently, they look like Lidl own brand range rovers. I’ve heard they’re pretty good from people who own them.

yup ik the ones youre on about they are everywhere think its because they are dirt cheap.
they may look like lidl own brand range rovers, but i think they look Damn good. Much better than some of the modern BMW monstrocities!!!
Key-Original-225
Modern BMWs are easily some of the worst looking cars (but to be honest most cars nowadays look very similar and bland)

Some of the electric BMW's with what looks like a big sticker on the front where the grill was look weird to me.
Gorilla_Pie
BYD I absolutely would, they’re a very impressive outfit, already a legit Tesla rival. The others I’m less fussed about. It’s true that EVs have turned cars into more like white goods and previously unknown brands can quickly gain momentum. I still remember when people laughed at (Korean, not Chinese) Samsung and LG TVs and considered them cheap and nasty… now look!

China is building for future prosperity and you can see it in the way they do business
meanwhile our leaders are actively trying to bring on an apocalypse, to distract us from all their heinous crimes against women, children, and babies, and so they can justify taking away our remaining public services, reducing our standards of living, and leaving us in a dystopian hellscape
they're not perfect, but i don't have any problem buying from China
Paradroid888
This is it. I see all these comments about Chinese EVs being bad because of state intervention. But in this country we used to have state intervention and we were better off than we are now. It's our fault we ruined it all with neoliberal economics.
