Amid an exceptionally warm March in Japan, the cherry blossoms in Kyoto peaked Friday, the earliest in more than 1,200 years of records. The record bloom fits into a long-term pattern toward earlier spring flowering, a compelling indicator of climate change, experts say.

cherry blossom trees are not one species. They bloom at very different times.
That being said, this year, the sakura were blooming really early, about a week or so.

All of the cherry trees out on display in cities and parks are all the same species.
They purposefully cloned them so they would bloom at the same time.

Our cherry blossoms are late really compared to last couple years in midwest. Theyve been blooming early but still havent here. I bet its coming like tomorrow or this week though

Texas had that deep freeze back in February, and people started going "Lol its snowing in Texas global warming?" And not even 2 weeks later it was 86 degrees. Unpredictable weather patterns like that are proof of climate change.

Since 2007 I have posted pics of my pink Tabebuia trees on FB. As a landscape designer I got them for their Easter bloom period mid to late April (Orlando FL). Over the yrs those trees bloomed earlier and earlier, last yr was New Years Eve. This yr was 10 days into January after a couple of cool nights in Dec. What was supposed to look like pink snow (fallen blooms) for Easter has turned into pink snow for Jan.

Def not a climate chanhe denier, but how are they tracking the year? What sort of calendar are they using? Has the calendar changed in those 1200 years? Is there any astronomical reason that explains this shift? Always be curious, and always ask questions. Hope a smarty pants has answers even if it’s that those questions arent relevant.

Should we not be looking at trends over years
Yeah if only somebody had done that... as described in that very article:
“Since the 1800s, warming has led to a steady trend toward earlier flowering that continues to the present day,” Cook said.
And maybe put these things in a greater context as well to ensure that they aren't just outliers:
The human-caused warming of the planet we’re witnessing today is unprecedented going back millennia.

The Earth used to have no ice at the poles at some point. Doesn't mean humans would be able to survive. It's all about how fast the change occurs. If it's too fast for us to evolve, adapt, or find a solution off-world then we're extinct. The simultaneously horrifying, yet strangely comforting thing about this is that the Earth will be fine. Other species will survive and take over.

Is it climate change or that humans have been in lockdown across the world for the first time in hundreds of years? Because this year our area had a normal winter unlike 2 years ago when it was very warm. I wonder if it is something to do with pollinating and the lack of humans?

How do you read this and then think that the climate isn't changing? this is the earliest it's ever been since the record started being kept. I would say that that is a sign.

Everything's a sign of climate change. Yes, the climate changes, always has and no matter what we do it will continue. It is absolutely insane to think that the blx in time of a century of human activity is long enough to affect changes in climate. New England has some of the most capricious weather in the country, always has. Thirty years ago I saw my daffodils poking through the snow in February, hasn't happened since.

No one is saying climate change isnt real, we are saying it really isn't as big of a deal as most people think it is.
Summer is gonna be longer and its gonna be a tiny bit warmer from now on.
We've got bigger problems like genocide and overpopulation and waste and over harvesting our planets resources.
And lets not forget about the obesity and heart disease killing hundreds of thousands in the USA alone each year.

This is purely anecdotal, but the college I went to has a ton of Sakura that were donated to us by the towns sister city in Japan. They always bloomed at random times, which caused issues for planning the Sakura Matsuri they held in early spring quarter. Not sure if its because they're blooming in the US instead of Japan, where they're from though.

Here in Virginia the dogwoods have already started to bloom. This usually doesn’t happen for another 2-3weeks. It’s always mid-April and the only reason I remember is because it cause my allergies

In Illinois they usually come out around April 10-20. In 2012, the spring was so warm (a whole week of 80s in March) that they came out a whole month early, around March 15. That was a weird spring in general because all the trees were fully leafed out by around April 1. It taught me that temperature is more important than day length for getting the flowers and leaves to grow.

I watched an interview recently that I think might help us all....
The person used the term “instability.”
I think it’s leaps and bounds ahead of “climate change” and “global warming.” First of all climate change is too open ended, as if we don’t know what it’s going to change into; and warm sounds comfortable, so global warming doesn’t sound horrific — when we really need it to.

That’s beautiful. But also disturbing. Hopefully we can get the earth under control. I mean we should be able to do that right?... I’m a little mad we can’t agree on climate control at this point. Like why can’t we agree to take care of this planet God gave us?

Im in germany, yesterday morning we had 2°C and all trees were basically bare. In the afternoon we had 20°C and this morning a shitton of trees and flowers bear opening buds...
Its like it went from winter to spring over night, literally.

It is pretty strange. Northern northern NY here, right on the Canadian border. Relatively mild winter here. Was seventy degrees last week for a few days. What little snow we did have was gone in a week. Not that I'm complaining, it's just gotten strange these past few winters as far as the severity of the weather we get.

Serious question: Is this not more indicative of the cyclical nature of climate on the earth as opposed to human caused climate change? Wouldn’t they be blossoming earlier and earlier every year if it had to do with human causes climate change?

That means, 1,200 years ago we had the same climate - without the influence of humans.
So, how did the humans survive back then? How did nature survive back then?
