Definitely more international. Rice, pasta, lots of vegetables that are not traditionally German. I'd say I eat an entirely "national" meal maybe once a week.

Same for me being British, when I cook it's generally pasta or rice. I never cook anything that is culturally British, although some of it could be considered neutral territory like when I used to chuck together random salads a lot

Tbf most of our german food takes a long time to prepare. On weekdays I’d rather stand in the kitchen for 20 - 30 minutes making some spagetti bolognese.

And it's mostly quite "heavy" food if you know what I mean

Once a week is probably more than most young germans! German food takes so long to prepare and on top of that, I sit on my ass in front of a computer all day. No need to feast like I worked a 12 hour shift in a coal mine or on a field anymore. I personally eat way more Italian or Asian dishes.

how common are non-european restaurants in Germany?

Asian restaurants (especially chinese, vietnamese, indian) are everywhere. Also "mexican" but many are not really authentic.

but the most common foreign restaurants are Italian, followed by Greek. Those two nations are the home to many of the foreign workers that fuelled Germany's economy in the 60s and 70s.
The biggest number of immigrants were the Turks. A Turk supposedly invented the Döner as most people know it and as you will find it on r/doener. Döner stalls outnumber any other type of fast food by a magnitude. There were 16.000 of them in 2011, McDonald's had about 1400 restaurants in Germany at the time.

Definitely. In the past week, dinners have been Italian, Chinese, Italian, Greek, Thai, a lentil and sausage casserole- not sure where that comes from -, and tonight Chinese again.
The only time I have "Irish" food is when we have a roast, or a nice bit of boiled bacon, about once every three weeks

National cuisine. I love other countries' cuisines, but I eat national dishes most of the time whether they be cooked by me or if I go out to eat.

That's because your cuisine is so wonderful

It's also because the more exotic the cuisine, the harder certain ingredients are to come by though!

Cosmic_Meme151
I eat almost only italian dishes. Pasta Is my primary source of carbohydrates.

When your cuisine is Italian, why would you bother to learn to cook anything else?

Me too, pasta is fast and easy if you know what you are doing, and the different sauces make different dishes, so it doesn't feel like we are eating the same thing everyday.
Also Italian cuisine includes a lot of fish, vegetables and meat, so eating Italian isn't restricted only to pasta.
Anyway, I think the second most eaten cuisines (at least here in Milan) are Japanese (mostly sushi), Chinese and Mexican + obviously American fast foods.

You'd be crazy not to, sitting right at the source of the best food in the world

In Milan you might find more international restaurants, but frankly it is still really few if compared to other major European cities ( like London). But I really doubt the vast majority of Italian would be able or regularly cook Chinese, Mexican or any kind of food aside for Italian, and home cooking is what most people eat most of the times.

porcupineporridge
Sunday is always a proper roast dinner. Beyond that it’s probably more international fare such as Italian and Indian dishes. Also a big fan of Mexican food.

Definitely local dishes. I'd say most Spanish people do the same. Of course I love good food, sometimes I eat Indian, Mexican, Asian... But just occasionally.

Agree, even in big cities we eat mostly Spanish food everyday.
But I think the most foreign dishes we eat by far are Italian, because we share the same good quality ingredients and olive oil based recipes.

Italian and French cuisines are quite similar to Spanish, I don't eat them too often because when I want to eat something different I want something different.

Ishana92
Way more national. Only in last maybe ten years have foreign dishes and cousine started spreading. But it is still kind of uncommon. Asian/chinese/thai has one, maybe two restaurants in my town. Same with mexican. No indian or japanese.

Graikopithikos
Unless you live in a city with more than 100,000 people then you likely don't even have any foreign food options

Surface_Detail
Here there's at least one curry house, chinese takeaway and kebab shop for every hundred people, lol.

LordMarcel
What counts as "Dutch cuisine"? Spaghetti with tomato sauce isn't originally Dutch, but it's so common everywhere as a standard meal that I would consider it belonging to our national cuisine now.

fjellheimen
If I'm eating an open sandwich with traditional Norwegian bread, but with Dutch cheese and Spanish ham, does that count as foreign or national?
And if I use 20% pork in my kebab, is it still Turkish? What about a Grandiosa is that Norwegian or Italian? Because I've never encountered an Italian who accepts that Grandiosa is "Italian food".

ItsMeishi
We eat more asian/mediterranian than anything else. Dutch folk food, sucks balls.

It seems that most Dutch people eat that way! At home I basically need to beg my parents to eat something ‘exotic’ like spaghetti though. It’s potatoes everyday (usually baked, but also fried or boiled). Of course paired with some veggies and way too much meat lol. My dad works in construction so he needs those heavy meals I guess. We do often get Chinese/Indonesian take-out on the weekends

g0ldcd
I'd say 50/50

But that 50% foreign, is usually a bastardization which would incense the national gatekeepers of that cuisine.
I think my favourite meal might be a baked risotto with chorizo, chicken thighs & saffron. I would be afraid to serve it to a spaniard (but I enjoy it greatly).

Always interesting when travelling in Europe to see their 'versions' of a foreign food.
Germany seems to cook pasta until it's 'furry' and adds sugar rather than spice to their currys - but then I've no issue adding cream to a carbonara and the currys I made have nil resemblance to say a lentil dahl I get served in an Indian canteen.

I'm meandering about here.
I think my point was that there are national dishes we all love and will eat when we travel - but I'm more fascinated by the interpretations we make of the same foreign dishes.

I guess it depends on what we define traditional, because potato became a common dish in Russia less than 200 years ago, about the same time as rice, yet potato is definitely traditional, but rice is not.
Anyway, soups and kasha are staple foods, I personally eat them often with a lot of other traditional Russian dishes. And it's quite typical, I believe. But foreign food is popular, especially as a fast food.

National cousine & my own creative stuff is majority, international when i eat out. (After all why buy the thing you can also make as well or better?0

Rules regarding food are the only ones Italians are willing to follow, so they take them very seriously.
