The last 15 years saw the explosion of “athleisure.” Prior to that, people didn’t really wear yoga pants outside of gyms and jeggings everywhere. Joggers definitely weren’t a thing. People didn’t wear pajama pants outside unless they were going to a costume party or a school spirit day with pajama theme.
I think when we look back at this time we might think how everyone was wearing their exercise and bedtime garments for daily life.

It’s hard to see the fashion styles when you’re in the middle of it. I remember thinking this exact thought in the 90s. Only looking back do I see the distinct styles from that time.
Look at some styles from 2005ish (roughly 15 years ago) and you’ll see it definitely different from today.

It changes SOOOO much more rapidly than it used to. Back in my day 5-10 years ago things would typically be in style for a year or two at least, and now it changes every month. There have been a lot of articles about how tiktok has wreaked havoc on the unsustainable fast fashion industry because people are ordering cheap shit from Shein to stock an entire new wardrobe several times a year. I remember reading about how some very specific type of dress was “in” in like March, and by August it made you look basic and was over.

It is a lot easier, with the technology we have today, to quickly recycle, repackage and redistribute derivate cultural products than it is to discover more "naturally" occurring subcultures and elevate them into pop culture. This is what you were seeing in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, where multiple subcultures were generating new forms of expression. My adolescence, late 80s early to mid 90s, involved hip-hop, grunge and rave culture. All harnessed new technologies to make them really standout from their roots. And each of then had their own very diverse ecosystems. Today it is more about process. What makes something palatable is well known, you can find a video on how to recreate anything. You can make something that samples from previously successful cultural products, remix it, alter it a bit, which is similar to before, but the difference is now all the real energy in the tech and in the companies is in harnessing the data for the marketing and distribution, not figuring out what can be done with a sampler or graphic design program. Because it is really easy to make "real" looking final products with current software. Companies don't need to discover or manufacture unique things, you need to discover more effective ways of selling "good enough" remixes of old culture with a shiny new label. Obviously everything is ultimately derivative, but today being a big step or change is less important than effectively marketing things that are good enough to sell.

It is a lot easier, with the technology we have today, to quickly recycle, repackage and redistribute derivate cultural products than it is to discover more "naturally" occurring subcultures and elevate them into pop culture. This is what you were seeing in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, where multiple subcultures were generating new forms of expression. My adolescence, late 80s early to mid 90s, involved hip-hop, grunge and rave culture. All harnessed new technologies to make them really standout from their roots. And each of then had their own very diverse ecosystems. Today it is more about process. What makes something palatable is well known, you can find a video on how to recreate anything. You can make something that samples from previously successful cultural products, remix it, alter it a bit, which is similar to before, but the difference is now all the real energy in the tech and in the companies is in harnessing the data for the marketing and distribution, not figuring out what can be done with a sampler or graphic design program. Because it is really easy to make "real" looking final products with current software. Companies don't need to discover or manufacture unique things, you need to discover more effective ways of selling "good enough" remixes of old culture with a shiny new label. Obviously everything is ultimately derivative, but today being a big step or change is less important than effectively marketing things that are good enough to sell.

I am always surprised at kids listening to 80’s music. In the early 80’s, that would be akin to listening to the hits from the 1930’s. Trust me…that never happened.

There were clear fashion trends strongly associated with those musical styles. I don't think we've had any era-defining music since the early 2000's.

it's the internet. in the time before, it took massive amounts of resources to drive fashion trends, so a relative few were able to top down things. but with the internet so many people could then publicize their fashion ideas so easily so things found their middle ground very easily and you didn't have bonkers extremes like massive shoulderpads or clown pants.
