To be fair, Herodotus was actually pretty even-handed in his depiction of the Persians.
One reason that we read everything from the Greek POV in the West is that not much that was written in Achaemanid Persia has survived, other than copious records. We have a much better idea of how the Greeks saw themselves and foreign peoples than we do the Persians.
300 is a load of rubbish.
If I were asked to list two great Persian achievements, then:-
Creating an empire that did not rely upon slavery, genocide, mass deportations, unlike previous middle Eastern empires. Of course, the Persians could be brutal towards their enemies, but they were far milder than say, Assyrians or Babylonians. They were also very religiously tolerant.
The invention of landscape gardening. The Persians were famous for the creation of “paradises”, landscaped parks that influenced everything that came later in Europe.

Sassanid emperor Khosrow Anushiravan once said to his son :
“ Oh my son
If our enemies be the ones who write history , then they would picture beautiful as ugly & ugly as beautiful”
Seems like he pretty much foresaw the future .
Well , one can not expect those ones who picture us like these to be fair about us , my friend .
It's pretty much in nature of nations to write history in a way that they show themselves as the righteous positive figures & others as negative barbarians , without mentioning their own dark sides .

That claim is one of the most pretentious things I have ever read, and for it to come from a history teacher is atrocious. Every civilization contributed to something in one way or another to different civilizations, especially large empires like the Persian.

It's not like Persians are the only culture to get snubbed like that. The “barbarian's" that took down West Rome in my opinion got screwed over worse.

The Barbarians get their own TV show on Netflix, the Persians get the 300.
(Yes, I’m aware the show Barbarians isn’t about the fall of Rome, but I think my overall point still stands.)

I think it is important to note that while every civilization has an impact of some form in history, there are ones that are more impactful on the way of global history than others.
Yes the « Barbarians » had advanced civilizations of their own, I mean they beat the Roman Armies, so they must have known of to fight, as even after the 3 century crisis the roman armies were still a very powerful and adaptable force. On the other hand, culturally, Latin culture is more widespread than Anglo-Germanic, although it’s not that big of a margin, when you consider UK and US’s past and present influence in the world, which seems to indicate that the « Barbarians » tended to adopt roman culture and institutions more often than the other way around.
Thus it seems to me that Rome was, even in decline, a majorly more influential player than the various Germanic kingdoms of the 5 to 9 century AD.

Copious records? Do you mean stuff like tax receipts, reports on grain shipments, and other bureaucratic records?
We probably just haven't discovered other documents yet, given the economic situation Iran has been under for the past several decades, I can't imagine archeological work is one of their top priorities.
The same situation happened in China, ever since their economic boom archaeologists have been making more and more discoveries. It seems to have especially accelerated in the post-2010 years.
This is why I'm pretty excited for archeology in Asia, in many ways you can say its just beginning, as nations develop their states can shift more resources to archeological work.

Yes. Such records can tell us much, but not how people saw themselves and neighbours.
Obviously, I’d be very excited if actual literature, histories, plays, poetry, from this period began to emerge.

Chess was popularized and modified by the Persians as the modern game closely resembles that of their version (at least in my eyes). Equal credit deserved.
Wrestling is a martial art, and as a martial art, one of its earliest developers were Persians. Only martial artists can understand.

As to religious tolerance, Darius was a fervent Zoroastrian, and instigated a ‘holy war' on those who were adherents of ‘the lie'(false gods and demons) This was practically unheard of in those times as conquerors were respectfully fearful of offending foreign gods, and monotheism was an utterly alien concept.
As I'm sure you know, Zoroastrianism was the precursor of monotheism, and the template that 2nd temple Judaism would model itself on.

The Jews were free to worship Yahweh, the Egyptians, their own pantheon, the Babylonians Marduk etc. in Persian times. Zoroastrianism is not, strictly speaking, a monotheistic religion, but rather dualistic.
I would dispute your descxtion of other conquerors. The Babylonians destroyed the first temple in Jerusalem. The Assyrians famously bragged of the destruction of temples, proof positive that that the gods of the vanquished had failed them.

300 is a graphic novel brought to live-action. On other words, it's a glorified comic book.
And why are the Greeks are so muscular and beautiful, while the Persians ugly monsters? Because it's a story to rouse the troops before the Battle of Plataea!
In short, the whole movie is a propaganda piece — a pro-Spartan propaganda piece. (You'll note that the non-Spartan Greeks don't fare that well in the movie either.)
If you want a fictional account of Thermopylae that's rather closer to the historical account, read Stephen Pressfield's Gates Of Fire. I highly recommend it. (By the way, it has a much more sympathetic portrayal of Persians too.)

You’re right, it was a propaganda piece, but the asshats yelling “fuck ya!” at the end of the movie weren’t young Spartan warriors being recruited for Palatea. Mind you, the theatre was dark, so I may be mistaken, but they looked an aweful lot like white right-wing Americans being whipped up into “Clash of Civilizations” frenzy to buff the Army’s recruiting quota for the war in Iraq. It was 2007 after all. Full marks for seeing it for what it was (propaganda) but I think you’re missing it for the cynical and disgusting hate-mongering piece of turd that it was.

Are you making the claim that 300 was intended to be an American propaganda film? I’ve watched the movie several times, and I don’t see that at all.
Nor do I think your delightfully profane fellow-movie-watchers thought it was. As several movie critics have said about 300, it was one of the very few military-themed movies of the time that celebrated warriors as warriors. I have heard that many American soldiers, and those who supported them, got sick of seeing movies that portrayed soldiers as assassins without honor.
Everybody likes to be portrayed as the good guy now and then. Soldiers do get well-deserved recognition now and then… but in 2007, recognition from Hollywood was hard to find.
As for the portrayal of the Persians, well, personally I found the 7-foot-tall heavily-pierced Xerxes-in-a-diaper hard to take seriously. I saw this as the flip side of the Spartans. Xerxes certainly didn’t look like that; the historical Spartans certainly didn’t all have bodybuilder physiques either. As I said, it’s a comic book.
Some people like comic books. Others don’t.

Well, Borat was intended to make fun of the American ignorance on foreign countries but it resulted in people mocking Kazakh's.
Same could be said about the 300 movie, the original aim might have been to depict this fun little Spartan propaganda-piece but we all know it resulted in a lot more people getting the wrong impression on Persian's than actually understanding the movie and not forming negative views on them.

Well, Borat was intended to make fun of the American ignorance on foreign countries but it resulted in people mocking Kazakh's.

Persian civilization was among the great civilizations of all times throughout history that contributed to so many aspects of human activities like administration, connecting cities through a very ahead of its time net of roads, tolerance and acceptance of people regardless of their ethnicity etc. After the conquest of the east the Greek civilization came to adapt quite enough elements of Persian civilization. Being Greek myself I always find Persian history very interesting and fashinating.

the greeks never conquered the East, lmao. Nice try slipping your propaganda in there.

I have to say off that sounds like a straw Man question. . anyone who claims the Persians were not a great civilization should be ignored because they don't know what they were talking about

In my god forsaken neck of the woods (Chile), in history class in high class… we actually learnt about ancient Persia. Granted, not a lot (I think ancient history was 1/3 all ancient middle east, 1/3 ancient greeks and 1/3 romans), but they were taught

I don't want to defend the teacher's comment, but we have to admit that Europe does see itself as directly descended from Rome and Greece and that's why european influenced curricula put a lot more focus on those cultures. And even though any educated person knows that Persia had a huge influence in the modern world, a lot of that influence comes to us mediated by the Roman and Arab empires.

I think it’s fair to say anyone would prefer to be a subject of the Persian empire than a spartan, let alone a slave under the Spartans. The Spartans were a cruel militaristic society. The Persians way more benign.

The same thing is applicable even to WWII. If you want get closer to an obxtive opinion you must put a lot of effort into studying history from many sources. People are not willing do that and a biased version might be good enought for many of them.

Al Khwarizmi was a middle ages persian. The word algorithm comes from his name. That's enough contribution?
On the other hand, spartans did not contribute anything to modern world, except perhaps that the nazis were inspired by them, as the nazis wanted to treat slavs in the same way spartans treated helots. I would prefer to be a subject of the persian King before a helot in Sparta.

This is so biased and certainly untrue about Sparta!!! Apparently your knowledge of Ancient Greek history and Sparta’s contribution to the Greek civilization being the purest example of “the Dorian Spirit and way of life”. INVALUABLE for those who can understand and appreciate Doricism!!!! Several of the most important classical philosophers at the time, considered the “Spartan System” superior to the Athenian Democracy that could degenerate sometimes into anarchy and the rule the by ignorant mobs!!!!! As for Nazism, Fascism and the the likes they are inventions that occurred in modern history, with a racist and totalitarian character, a total distortion of what they interpreted as “Spartan”. Not unlike a misinterpretation of much of the TRUTHS inside the Greek Philosophy and that which is known as “the Greek Spirit”. Η Ειρήνη ας είναι μαζύ σας (May peace be with you)…….

As far as I know they were the only one defended themselves from Romans successfully ever. This single thing should be enough to make them a legend, apart from their great and spectacular civilization.

This is not an answer with a single fact… would have been great to simply list a few inventions, which contributed to human kind, or just science…

In my school in Croatia we were learning a lot about Persia. Well as much as one can in public high school. We learned Cyrus the Great was a visionary who allowed different ethnic groups and religious groups to co exist together

If your going to answer a question about whether Persia contributed anything to modern history, you should describe some actual historical contributions. Just saying.

, I am a perennial student of history.
Wow, your teacher must be a real bumpkin! Where the hell did they learn their “history”?
The Persians were one of the most influential Empires in history. Their realm stretched from parts of India and Central Asia to Greece and they operated trade routes that went all the way to China. The Greeks themselves, under Alexander, heavily adopted aspects of Persian statecraft and culture and the Zoroastrian religion is believed to have had a subtle, but huge effect on the Abrahamic religions. Modern Christianity is partly Mithraism in disguise, a fact that becomes strikingly apparent when you read the story of Mithra.
İn any case, the Persian influence on history was massive and endured for millennia. The claim that the Persians “really contributed nothing to the modern world” is so far beyond ignorant, it’s embarrassing and anyone claiming to be a teacher of history who says such a thing should hand back their certificates and get another job.
