A million UK adults went an entire day without eating over the past month because they could not afford to put a meal on the table, according to research highlighting how the cost of living crisis has driven up food insecurity.

Soaring energy and grocery prices – along with the removal in October of the £20 Covid top-up to universal credit – were having a devastating impact on the food consumption of millions of people, the Food Foundation thinktank said.

More than one in five households said they have already faced a ”heat or eat” dilemma, cutting back on the quality or quantity of food to pay energy or other essential bills, while 59% of households fear the cost of living squeeze will leave them with less to spend on food in the future.

Altogether, nearly one in 10 UK households reported experiencing some degree of food insecurity over the past month – defined as skipping meals, going hungry or not eating for a whole day – because they were unable to afford food.

“There is little doubt that the cost of living crisis is putting very real pressure on the ability of many to afford a healthy diet and is set to widen health inequalities,” the foundation said.

Millions of households are under increasing financial pressures as a result of soaring energy bills and rising inflation. Gas and electricity bills will rise by an average of £700 a year from April, pitching 5m households into fuel poverty, despite measures introduced by the government to ease the strain.

Grocery bills have also risen sharply, up 3.8% in January and potentially adding an extra £180 a year to the average household’s grocery bill this year. The strain on low-income family budgets is reflected in soaring demand at food banks and cut-price food clubs.

The anti-poverty campaigner Jack Monroe recently revealed how food price rises had pushed up the price of the cheapest 500g bag of pasta in her local supermarket from 29p to 70p (an increase of 141%), rice from 45p a kilo to £1 for 500g (344%), and baked beans from 22p to 32p (45%).

The Food Foundation survey was undertaken online between 18 and 20 January, polling 4,200 adults. It found 8.8% of all households, containing 4.7 million adults, reported that they had experienced food insecurity, up from 7.3% in July, when the last survey was undertaken.

About 2 million children were living in households that do not have access to a healthy and affordable diet, putting them at risk of diet-related diseases such as obesity, and poor physical growth, the foundation said.

Some groups were more likely to have experienced food insecurity over the last six months than others. People with serious disability were five times more at risk than those without a disability. People on universal credit were five times more likely to be food insecure than those not claiming.

“The rapid escalation in disabled people experiencing food poverty is truly shocking. It is disabled people facing the biggest barriers to independence and inclusion that are in the worst situation; how can this possibly be acceptable?” asked Kamran Mallick, the chief executive of Disability Rights UK.

A Government spokesperson said: “We know this has been a challenging time for many people, which is why we’re providing support worth around £12bn this financial year and next to help households with the cost of living, including putting an average of £1,000 more per year into the pockets of working families, and we have announced a further £9bn to protect against the impact of rising global energy prices.

“Our £500m Household Support Fund is also giving more help to the most vulnerable with essential costs such as food this winter, and our holiday activities and food programme is providing healthy food and enriching activities to disadvantaged children during major school holidays.”

Someone was telling me here last month how food wasn’t the problem. It’s the cheapest its ever been and you can live for £1 a day.

When I was 19 (29 years ago) I was briefly unemployed and unemployment benefit was £29.50/week.
I had a budget of £2/day for food. Even at 1993 prices I struggled to eat and sometimes my one meal a day would consist of a bowl instant mash/gravy or a bowl of porridge.
How someone expects a person to live on £1/day is unreal.

I had 3 cans of tesco rice pudding as my meals last Friday. 20p a can. I had some peanut butter too thankfully. I can afford a bit more but I am freaked out as we barely break even as it is. Today my electric supplier emailed to say my bill is doubling and likewise, my Internet bill is going up by £10 too. At weekends I go to family members houses for dinner =(

My heating is off most days, I wear two jumpers and socks to stay warm in the house. I eat one meal a day, I could afford 2 but that would mean I would have less money in my bank. I'm using my neighbours wifi(no I'm not stealing it, we both half the payments).

you can live for £1 a day.
Sure if you go hunt the pigeons in one of the cities

It won't change their minds. They're not simply ignorant, they're thick too.

That does not mean they will believe it. They will blame these people for spending money on frivolous things such as bus fare to work or a phone. Those types always want to blame the individual and not society as a whole for poverty.

Belgeirn
“They will just say "Have you tried getting a better job/a job at all"”
"But cheaper food" is the other one they like to spout.
The only way many will care about this is after they have gone a day (or a few) without eating.

donnacross123
They wont. They probably have seen plenty of homeless people begging in the streets and frozen to death still doesnt make a difference for them, many will say those are not british people but illegal immigrants (when they are actual citizens), specially when referring to drug addicts, others will say that it doesnt equate to poverty elsewhere etc.
If you read what an avarage daily mail reader think about this subject is shocking, they will starve themselves rather than admit that we have a problem.

podcastaddjct
Last night I was taking a cigarette break at work with two colleagues and the manager (I work long and heavy night shifts to barely cover rent/food/bills and transport).
A homeless person walks by and they all start shitting on them and saying they “all have council houses” that they “want to be like this” that they “don’t want help, they like it this way” and so on And so forth. As a person that has volunteered with homeless and vulnerable people I tried a few rebuttals but they were so close minded that I realised I was getting too upset and I needed to watch my mouth in front of the manager. So I shut up and just listened to the most heartbreaking collection of stereotypes about how “these people” are actually richer than any of us.
I’ve lost hope.

tothecatmobile
They just gave up on some luxuries, like light and heating. They'd be able to afford food.

We're one of the richest countries on earth. We should all be collectively ashamed that this is happening here.
This isn't 'just the way things are' or 'tough times'. This is a choice.
Shame.

The UK is becoming like Russia where the oligarchs got rich by stealing from everyone and then keeping everyone poor by entrenching themselves as a new nobility.
Why do you think the Tories take so much Russian money and let them hide their stolen money in London?

The UK is a rich country, full of poor people.

I really do wonder where the breaking point for us is. What's the point where the middle class finally say enough and get out protesting, or even more.
Its been like boiling a frog so far.

If you are wondering, just look to Russia.
Maybe we won't have a singular Putin, but the Tory party being in power now 12+ years is making a run for it.

In before someone says that we as a nation have an obesity problem and this fasting is a good thing...

Orgone_Wolfie_Waxson
Its funny that because most cheaper foods on avarage lead to obesity because of the preservatives. Eating with healthy options is more expensive

It's a national scandal but the blame will go solely on the victims from those who are in power to do something about it. The rich are not going to admit that society needs to change as that will affect their bank balances, something they will never allow to happen. It will become a crisis that will continue to grow enough people are too hungry to sit quietly anymore and riots start to break out.

Hopefully there will be some safety nets like food bank. Nobody, no man nor woman nor child should go hungry. This isn't like the middle ages ...

I work for a charity that started in 2013, it ran a foodbank to begin with. Over the last three years we've added a babybank and a school uniform project last summer. We are seeing more working families, so far this year we've provided approx 16350 meals in our parcels. Last year its was roughly 10000 per month.
I get told daily, "we used to donate to to your foodbank trolley at the supermarket, I never thought we'd need to ask for help"
We know that some of the people coming to us, haven't had a decent meal for a cple of days.

limedifficult
I’m a volunteer driver for our local food bank. We are based in a small town in a rural area. Pre pandemic, there were about 60 people on the long term books, and then your occasionals - people who were in between jobs, had a benefits error, etc. but only needed temporary help. Our regular users have gone up 3,000% in the past two years, and almost all of them are either families where at least one adult is working or families headed by a disabled adult.

Moikee
Is it possible that because people are giving generously to food banks and such that it masked the problem further?
I'm not saying your projects aren't worthwhile but I wonder if some companies or the government just think "oh well, they'll set up another bank and sort it out among themselves" instead of making them responsible for actual investment and change? We sorely need this and there's only so much the poor people can divide among themselves.

pajamakitten
Hopefully there will be some safety nets like food bank.
They are facing unprecedented demand and can barely keep up with referrals. Besides, as cost of food goes up, people will make cuts in their weekly food bill and that will include donations to food banks. We will see increased demand with decreased supply, creating a perfect storm that the government will do all it can to ignore.

RumAndTing
I absolutely agree. Worst thing is, charities should not be seen as a “safety net”. How could the well meaning efforts of some individual, sporadic and underfunded food banks possibly compare to government-led schemes, in terms of effectiveness and efficiency? The governments job is to protect and serve - part of that is surely to ensure that no one goes hungry in this country.
I don’t care if you’re “lazy” or whatever silly excuse that anti-welfare folks want to traipse out, you do not deserve to go hungry.
Even prisoners don’t go hungry. For fucks sake man what has this country come to…

Greymatterbutnothere
This makes me so sad because the numbers will go up with the heating crisis. I remember once someone commenting on the pasta sauces I was donating. They said ‘oh those are full of sugar, you would be better buying them tinned tomatoes ’. Asked her if she had ever lived in the real fucking world before.

BoxOfUsefulParts
Thank you for your donations. I like to remind our new volunteers and visitors that that when a person is having problems and may not have eaten for several days is not the time to be giving them healthy eating and lifestyle advice.

My husbands volunteered for the food bank a few times. The work there is endless isn’t it. We always try and donate foods for people with allergies like alternative milks, free from food. Our little boy has allergies so I know it’s expensive.

Yes, we support about 120 local charities and agencies with our work.
I specialise in food parcels for those with special diets and our donors are very generous so their needs are met in my community. Not all food banks are so fortunate and we able to support some of those.
Thank you for your donations. Please direct those in need to their local foodbank. We will help when we can.

Globalisation can turn out real bad for certain societies and social groups. When most primary and a huge chunk of secondary production leaves for, say, China, you're left with millions of people growing up with a "I'll just do what me dad and grandad did" but failing to realise that 90% of those jobs are gone for good. These days you nearly always need a Master's to work in the tertiary or quaternary sectors, BUT education is expensive and if you grow up in a family with 5 kids in Doncaster where mum and dad work lowskilled jobs and never bothered (or couldn't) help or emphasise the importance of education, well, needless to say, there are mountains to climb to reach the new level for being middle class.

Levelling up poverty and starvation - good job tories, give yourselves a pat on the back.

The fact that working people cant feed, clothe and house themselves, while their master(s) “earn” hundreds of thousands, if not millions, by taking the value other people are creating, is disgusting. If ilead this country id be so ashamed id probably, even kill myself. But our leaders have absolutely no morals and no shame. Half the electorate is honestly so thick its a miracle each time they remember to breathe. Theyll vote oppressors into government every single time.

Lord_of_Mogwai
Such a shame that this is happening in our country, we have the money and the food to feed everyone. Maybe the churches should start feeding more people as well, they have had a lot of money from us in the last 1000 years!

Like it is outright insulting how hard people work and toil to be this let down
Christ I just don't have the words for how apathetic and pathetic it all can seem
I utterly despise this country and what it's turned into under Tory rule.
This country could be a jewel but instead it gets spat and shat on from a great height by those who are meant to be our "leaders"
